  3. A good - make that great - deal for those who are new to this music. I"ve collected most of it in various forms over the years, so I'll play the hand I have.

  7. When I read these blindfold tests back in the day, I felt that Miles' insecurities sometimes slipped through the arrogant mask that he wore.

  10. I saw Dylan at Forest Hills Stadium in 1965. It was as much a spectacle as a concert. I dig Dylan's music but I never had the urge to catch him live after that.
  11. Probably the only LP in my collection that has four different titles: "Lester": Lester Young at Olivia's Patio Lounge on the spine; Lester Young in Washington, D.C. 1956 on the back; Lester Young at Olivia Davis' Patio Lounge Washington, District of Columbia, 1956 on the record label - The front cover seems right to me: "Pres".

  17. NY Times obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/19/books/mavis-gallant-short-story-writer-dies-at-91.html?_r=0 Reading her obituary, it seems as if she led a brave but perhaps sad life. I started reading her Collected Stories about two years ago and liked some of them, but there were too many to digest. I'll have to seek out a shorter collection.

  20. I'll agree with the clever part. It's taken me a while to gain at least some appreciation for what Carla Bley does (or tries to do) in her music, so I'm sympathetic to others lack of response (I still find enough to fault). This album seems to me to be a little easier to access. What do you not like about it Paul? I'd be interested in your thoughts on it, or her work generally, if you would care to share them. Continuing the theme: THE CARLA BLEY BAND: EUROPEAN TOUR 1977 - Watt LP. Great band: Andrew Cyrille, Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, Roswell Rudd, et al. At one point in time, I enjoyed Carla Bley's records. Actually, Social Studies was where I got off. Going back and listening over the years - and more so these days - I find that cleverness (to borrow your term) outweighs substance by a good margin. I also find that many of the musicians in her bands did better work elsewhere. That may or may not have been her fault. All this is just my opinion. I hope you don't let it influence you. I don't want to take away any enjoyment that someone else finds in music.
  21. Jimmy Giuffre's widow managed to buy a can of ravioli and two spoons due to the immense royalties that this set created. Really: what world do you live in? Or was this just an abysmal attempt at a joke? I guess I'm more of a humorist than I imagined.
  22. I'll agree with the clever part.
  23. She did skate well but, as the N. Y. Times pointed out today, she received a score of 149.95. Her previous high score was 131.63, recorded last month. Quite a leap. And how do you allow someone who's been suspended for trying to fix results to ever judge again? And to allow the wife of the former president and current general director of the Russian figure skating federation to judge the final program when Russians are skating seems questionable, at the very least. I'd say it's more than questionable. But in Russia, you play by Putin's rules or it's prison camp.
  24. My wife is into women's figure skating, so I watched the long program yesterday. It seemed to me that the young Russian skater who finished first received highly inflated scores. This morning I read: One of the nine judges who picked a young Russian skater over two more refined competitors for the Olympic gold medal Thursday night was suspended for a year for trying to fix an event at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. And another is the wife of the former president and current general director of the Russian figure skating federation. Another Olympics, another huge skating controversy involving the countries of the former Soviet Union. Once the Russian hockey team was eliminated from medal consideration, I figured Putin would drop the hammer.
