  1. Blue Mitchell: Out of the Blue (Riverside/Alto) Blue Mitchell and the rhythm section play very well on this record. Benny Golson plays magnificently.
  2. Thank you, Mr. Wess.
  3. Woody Allen Allen Iverson Kevin Youkilis
  4. First heard him on Sonny Rollins' Our Man in Jazz and it's still a good one to listen to.
  5. Mary Diana The Supremes
  6. Earl Hooker: Play Your Guitar, Mr. Hooker! (Black Magic)
  7. I' d like to add that James Von Streeter, who's best known for playing with the Johnny Otis Band, recorded a wild piece of blowing for Coral, "Landslide". Ace reissued it on Jumpin' the Blues Vol.3 (LP), remastered wonderfully by the late Bob Jones. There are two Von Streeter cuts on the LP, and Ace reissued the lesser of the two, "Chitlins" (the lesser of the two, at least my ears), on their Jumpin' the Blues CD. Grab the LP if you can find it.
  8. Philly Joe Jones: Philly Mignon (Galaxy)
  9. Joe McPhee Po Music: Oleo (Hat Musics)
  10. Yeah, I thought about that...but something just doesn't sound right. There are tapes for the very first Hat Hut....but not the other two later ones they had to needle drop on? Uehlinger doesn't come across as someone who would throw out the original tapes....especially anything by McPhee. The whole thing started to record McPhee. It's like Chuck throwing out AACM related tapes, or any tapes. The early Joe McPhee records on CJR were put out by Craig Johnson and McPhee. Uehlinger and Hat didn't come into the picture until a little later.
  11. All of the non-BN King pressings that I have and can think of are top notch.
  12. Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders (Contemporary) This isn't usually regarded as one of "the" Sonny Rollins albums and I had never regarded it as such, but listening today, there's some fine Sonny and some very good Barney Kessel on it. And Leroy Vinnegar is rock solid, as usual. A much better record than I'd remembered.
  13. Ralph Sutton & Jay McShann: Last of the Whorehouse Piano Players Vol. 1 (Chazz Jazz)

  16. That one's more easily said than done for me, Jim. Maybe it's easier for someone who's a musician.
  17. Gary Francis Powers Austin Powers Mini-Me
  18. Guy - Happy birthday to a true gentleman! Best wishes today (and everyday) to you.
  19. A musician friend of mine once said that's a record that separates the men from the boys.
  20. Not that I always do it, but listening with eyes shut is the best way to listen. And, as Bev said, never while driving.
  21. Happy Birthday!
  22. I remember Bill Sharman and Bob Cousy in the backcourt for the Celtics, I still have vivid memories of a series of plays in a particular game that amazed me at the time. The memory still does amaze me. Thanks, Mr. Sharman.
