  2. Don't know how true this is, but somewhere - probably in a liner note - I recall Orrin Keepnews writing that Bill Grauer made a long term deal with Reeves Sound Studios because he got a good deal with them. As I say, I don't know whether this is true or not.
  3. Hard to believe that the Yanks are pitching the bottom rung of their bullpen and are beating Tampa Bay 7-0 after 5 innings. Only one hit for TB.

  8. Thanks. Richard Wyands is enough to sell me... The Hines "reunion" records are uniformly excellent, but I tend to forget about them for some reason. For more prime Budd from the 70's, there's also Eldridge's NIFTY CAT date and the Basie GET TOGETHER, where he's paired with / against Lockjaw. Forgot about The Nifty Cat - real good one.

  12. I have some of this material on Columbia LPs. There seems to be a fair number of extra cuts on the set you listed, so I can't tell you anything about that. The music on the Columbias is very fine.
  13. Some of my favorite late period Budd Johnson is found on this one: edit - just checked and this is the same record that BeBop listed under a different title and label in post #6.

  17. Your mention of scuffles between fans and non-fans of Archie Shepp is interesting. Says something about how real the music was to people then. Can anyone imagine that kind of thing happening with today's musicians?

  20. At first quick glance, I thought it said corruption, graft, passion. Sounds exciting! Could make a great movie, like "Sex. Lies and Videotape." Might have sold more copies if they'd given it either of those titles.

  25. Why have you given up on bios? In general, I find too much emphasis on the unhappy or negative in music bios. I hear a lot in the music that I don't read much about in the biographies. The last musician's bio I read was Kelley's Thelonious Monk. After reading it, I felt depressed. Perhaps all of the details that Kelley reports occured, but there must have been a lot more than those details, because I hear Monk's music very differently than what I experienced in reading that book. All of this leads to a discussion of how much of musicians' lives go into their music, and how do life experiences find their way into the music. I don't have enough lifetime left to go there. I'd rather just listen. I guess what I want to say is listening to the music brings me far closer than any biography could ever hope to.
