  1. Read it a couple of weeks ago. Identified some with the internet bit. Hope I'm not as far gone as the rabid fan in the novel - tho my wife sometimes thinks I am. Different jacket cover for the book here in the States.
  2. The Rovin' Gambler Georgia Sam Poor Howard
  3. I bought a used LP copy of 'No Kidding' before Christmas. The music was amazing, but the recording is panned so hard in each channel, there is a huge dead middle in the sound. Very difficult to listen to. Perhaps the discs have been re-channeled? The Lee Konitz CD I mentioned is a mono recording with very decent sound.
  4. Peter Ind Presents Lee Konitz in Jazz from the Nineteen Fifties (Wave CD 39) contains additional material from The Real Lee Konitz (Atlantic) sessions - very fine music.
  5. Anita Brookner: Strangers
  6. Wayne Shorter: The All Seeing Eye (BN-"Wally")
  7. Ray Bolger Bert Lahr Jack Haley
  8. This Is Buck Hill (Steeplechase)
  9. Soupy Sales Barbecue Bob Seabiscuit
  10. Piper Laurie Peter Lorre Hugh Laurie
  11. Van Lingle Mungo Heenie Majeskie Johnny Gee
  12. Louis Armstrong: 1936-1946 - disc 1 Just want to add my 2 cents on Mosaic - currently being argued about in another thread. I find that the respect that Mosaic gives to the music in their attention to sound quality and in their presentation - booklets, completeness - prompts me to give the music more of the attention it deserves. Not saying that I don't listen carefully at other times, but when I take a Mosaic off the shelf, I always listen carefully.

  14. I've heard it pronounced Roosh, but I don't know if that's the correct pronounciation.
  15. Alexander Morton Salty Parker Bruce Dern
  16. The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions - disc 1 w. Bird, Ben, Hodges, Phillips, & Carter Granz' jam session recordings can get on my nerves sometimes, but I was in the right mood today.
  17. All the best to you on YOUR BIRTHDAY, Hans!
  18. This afternoon: Pres w. Basie - disc 1
  19. Were Revenant's legal problems due to conflicts with the Ayler estate, or with ESP, or both? I look forward to the Fahey release. Too bad there won't be a Revenant Ornette. Maybe if Mosaic's not hurting too badly, they could do something.
  20. Offhand, I can recommend the Chuck Guillery, Earl Hooker, Elder Roma Wilson, Sonny Simmons: Live in Paris, and the I Have To Paint My Face collection. Knowing Chris Strachwicz' (the owner of Arhoolie Records) releases in other genres, I'm sure that there are a lot of Mexican and Tex-Mex recordings on that list that are worth hearing, but I'm not familiar enough with that music to recommend anything.
  21. Shorty Long Long Tall Shorty Tommy Tucker
  22. I picked up a copy through a trade with a friend a couple of weeks ago. Liked disc 1 with the Golden Quintet very much. Liked disc 2 with Michael Gregory and a number of others a lot less - too much noodling by the other musicians and not enough Wadada. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of Miles' Silent Way - Bitches Brew - and beyond recordings for pretty much the reason I stated above, so if your tastes go to that kind of music you'll probably feel differently.
  23. Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Alfreda Hodgson/Horenstein/BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra -final movement - Der Abschied Not just the best track all week - I have a sense that I may not hear any music that's more moving than this over the rest of my life.
