  1. I've enjoyed her and her sister's singing and songwriting for over thirty years. Thank you Ms. McGarrigle for your gift of music.

  4. They have the right to strike and try and get what are asking for. Can't say that I feel sorry for them.

  10. Just want to put in a mention of Cecil Taylor: All the Notes, a film by Christopher Felver -lots of footage of Cecil playing, rehearsing (alone & with others), talking about music & other matters, and a cool sequence of him dancing as he prepares to go out to hear some music. Wonderful stuff & highly recommended to anyone who loves Cecil's music. Available from http://www.chrisfelver.com/films/index.html
  11. Getting warmer - 30 already at 9 a.m. Supposed to hit low/mid 40's this afternoon. It'll seem like spring!
  12. I love that Hanna recording too. Good luck with the concert, Jeff.
  13. Just curious if anyone else here besides GoodSpeak thinks that Bonds would have hit 73 or McGwire would have hit 70 without juicing.
  14. Penelope Lively's novel Family Album
  15. It probably is tied up in customs, but you should try your local post office, ask to speak to a supervisor, give him/her the registered tracking #, and see what they can find out. If it was a registered package and it did arrive in the U.S., chances are 99% that you will receive it.
  16. Dollar Brand/Don Cherry/Carlos Ward: The Third World - Underground (Trio Japan)
  17. Not to highjack this thread commemorating Mr. Rohmer, but Jean-Luc Godard is still with us. Those French filmmakers live long. Jacques Rivette, Godard, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais - all alive and working and past 75 years of age. Rohmer lived a full life and left us with an amazing series of films. R.I.P. Truffaut passed away rather early, though. Only 52, I believe. WAY too early. Any time is probably too early, but you're right - 52 was WAY too early.
  18. I'll be playing "Tennessee Blues" and "Walking to New Orleans" tomorrow. Thanks, Mr. Charles. R.I.P.
  19. Tom Lehrer Scott Joplin Nigel Bruce
  20. Fully agree! Wish there was a way to reverse the trend! Ed Thigpen's departure is very sad news No way we can reverse that trend, unfortunately. But knowing that it's there gives us all a good reason to treasure those who are still with us, and to let them know that whenever we have the opportunity. And I'm not just talking about musicians when I say that.
  21. Penelope Lively Sparkle Plenty Dashiell Hammett
  22. Ed Thigpen wasn't a stranger to younger musicians and newer forms of music. Check out his playing on John Lindberg's Quartet Afterstorm w. Lindberg, Eric Watson, and Albert Mangelsdorff (a contemporary who was also open to newer forms) and Lindberg's Bounce w. Lindberg, Dave Douglas, and Larry Ochs. He plays beautifully on both of these. Thanks for all that you gave us, Mr. Thigpen.
  23. Ain't it amazing how the NCAA places all sorts of restrictions on athletes changing schools, but coaches are allowed to break contracts and run wild.
  24. I saw them once in 1965. You were fortunate to have seen them a number of times.
