  1. Everyday People - written & directed by Jim McKay. Worth watching for the ensemble acting.
  2. Yeah - that's where I heard it. edit - I'm not a big Eckstine fan, normally a little goes a long way. But this is a good collection - even outside of the Metronome All Stars track.
  3. Buell Neidlinger's notes don't pull any punches. He says what he thinks and doesn't seem interested in niceties. An example: "I'm not sure that he (Cecil Taylor) deserves the status he has today because he never did make a big band or any size group that he held together beyond the quartet. He never wrote one jazz standard; others don't record his tumes. I suppose some people have attempted to play just like him so he's been an influence for sure. But let's put it this way: He has not come to the fruition that I thought he would in 1960 or when I first met him in '55. He is a forerunner and an inventor and a discoverer. In the sense of jazz piano, he is as much a collating force as Bach was to classical music in 1680 or 1690 or whenever. They both made musics that hadn't existed before ..." Then later: "After Cecil, except for some journeyman gigs with Jimmy Giuffre and a lot of singers, I played mainly classical music. It's like Lawrence Brown once told me, after playing with Ellington, where do you go? It was like that for me with Cecil." Even if you don't agree with what he says, he makes you think. And that's important. I hope I haven't broken any rules/laws with the quotes above. If I have, please have a moderator delete this post.

  5. I have wasted a bunch of time looking for a discussion about this one. Live At Newport 58, Horace Silver I can remember it being discussed here but can't find it. I share your frustration. It seems to me that some board members are much more adept than I at using the search function. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Did +horace +newport Then clicked search titles only & came up with: Don't know if that's what you were looking for.

  17. Started out in late 1962/early 1963 as an a) - Brubeck: Time Out; Clark Terry: Duke with a Difference; Mingus Ah Um; Rollins: Our Man in Jazz; Monk on a Riverside sampler. Very Shortly thereafter heard Louis' Hot Fives and some Ellington from the 30's and was hooked in that direction. I'm still listening and learning.

  19. Winn will probably be satisfied with whatever playing time he gets. I doubt that Damon would feel the same way.
  20. Hermoine Gingold Hermoine Baddeley Richard Goode
  21. I was sorry to see Damon go, but it appears if he wants to continue playing, he'll have to settle, as Bobby Abreu did last season, and go on from there. Abreu had a good season and came out of it with a two year deal. And hey, when you've made as much as some of these guys have, it's probably just like Monopoly money anyway.
