Well, the Aladdin recordings were made at the same time. The Modern recordings were also recorded in the Gold Star studios toward the end of Lightnin's affiliation with that company. For my money, the absolute pinnacle of Lightnin' might two precious tracks that he recorded for an obscure label in the mid-1950s (I forget the same right now. It is three letters, something like TNT) : Leavin' Blues and Moanin' Blues. Document issued them on CD with some other mostly strong material on a compilation called "The Remaining Titles: Volume 1." Lightnin' plays unusually distorted guitar on these two tracks, and that seems to inspire him to new heights. These sides are absolutely drenched with blues feeling. Thanks for this recommendation, ordered that one now.

Well, I like Roy Milton a lot! I have got those three Ace Specialty CD's and fine they are, but I like those P-Vine collections(have some others), and they have great song selections and sound, so I would like to find this one too.

These labels have very fine releases in that category, with packages with extensive liner notes and great sound: Old Hat Records http://www.oldhatrecords.com Dust-To-Digital http://dust-to-digital.com This Tompkins Square compilation - People Take Warning: http://www.tompkinssq.com/people_take.html And Yazoo and Revenant are also great labels as mentioned above. A Yazoo recommendation: Their "Before The Blues" sets are also great. And this gospel compilation: The greatest of early blues:

Been listening to this one a lot - it's fantastic. I guess discussion of it doesn't really belong in the African music thread since it's from Belize, but it's well worth picking up. Really great rhythms, interesting vocal harmonies and textures, great guitar work, melodic, great range of material. It hasn't been bumped out of rotation in the CD changer since I got it. Also picked up the Mande Variations - beautiful as expected. It's just lovely to hear Toumani's kora laid bare. Seeline, I got the books - about to dig into the Rumba on the River after I finish George Lewis' AACM book today. Thanks for all these links, they are great. I have got "Watina" with Andy Palacio now, and it's really wonderful. I do not know much about music from Belize, but this is the real thing. A friend of mine has been to Belize, and says that it's a beautiful country.
