Yes, I noticed a way in the back door to the MP3s of gdlive, and have been taking advantage of that. This is artwork from Germany for one of those MP3 shows. There's a lot of resources out there for Deadheads!

Sound quality is excellent, to me a clear improvement on the original OJC's (I don't have the box, but assume it was from the same mastering as the OJC's). The whole package is extremely well-done, and also priced right. I have it and can recommend it. I agree with felser in all he reports. There has been mention of this elsewhere, either in a thread of its own or in a K2 thread.

Definitely my very least favorite Mingus album.

I like Om. My vinyl copy was in bad shape. I bought a K2 Japanese Impulse about thee years ago that sounds really good. Short, weird, sweet.

With the right Classics I think you can have almost all this, don't remember how many alternates there are. Also, the Danish label Collector's Classics put out some excellent volumes of the best of the Wingy sides with excellent sound. So sad those discs aren't easy to find at all; there are a few that I missed and I would recommend the Henry Red Allen dics to many peoople if I felt they could find them.

There is one other advantage at least with the Belin dock station that I am using: you can recharge your iPod more quickly (I believe, I haven't timed it) and you can recharge without updating your iPod, so that your iTunes (if that's what you're using) and your iPod may contain differing material for a while if you want it that way. I enjoy that now and then.

Mention must be made of the beautiful soprano sound of Barney Wilen. Just as with his tenor, a beautiful full sound was important to his art and he brought it.

I'm a big fan of Wingy from start to finish, but these earlier Wingy sides are HOT! And there's really not enough Pee Wee on this set, but what is there is really good!

To each their own! I didn't necessarily like either the Paris or the Wilson cds at first but have come to over time. They wear well. I got them cheap and gave them a chance. Really like Smile. I think I have them all now and they grew on me.

I don't know whether it's the quality of his output, or the Columbia machine behind him (or both and additional factors), but I bet that Miles introduced a lot of persons of a certain age to serious jazz appreciation, or served as a "link."

Filles de Kilamanjaro started it all for me in late 1971. Found it as a ringer in a dull library collection, bought the lp, then soon bought Bitches Brew. I had "jazz" under my belt thanks to my mom and dad's Brubeck, Ellington, Miller and a few other lps. I didn't connect this Miles material to jazz at all for a spell. It had that electric blues feel that I had learned to love in Africa, and it had some aspects of African music to it as well. It was the first new music that I really responded to after returning to the States, and I dove into those releases and the ones to follow (and the offshoot bands such as WR, Headhunters, Return to Forever) with a passion.

Some good material, raising my esteem of Blue Note a bit more. I guess I like the albums Terrason has put out a bit more than Flurin, I think they're good straight ahead jazz and I like the "rapturousness" of some of his playing. The solo album should be interesting.

Are you familiar with Bix, Tram and Tea? If you're a fan of this style of music, you may have a lot of the material elsewhere . . . and though it sounds great here and there's a great booklet you may not feel justified buying it again. (I did, and I'm sort of glad I have, but I haven't spent a lot of time with the box set, I've mostly played the individual cds I had for some time instead). If you don't have this material, and can "handle" the sonic aspects of early jazz and what some perceive as "not as sophisticated as modern jazz" swing and vocal styles (some people can really put down the early recodings and just not get in to them) then this is a really interesting box. A great group of recordings, well presented.

The McLean would be my first grab of these.

Hey, I've had these in Houston since May. . . . Bose Companion 2 powered speakers. These are good for traveling tunes. Doesn't weigh too muchl Doesn't have an alarm clock function so if you need that. . . the iHome is okay I think, heard it in the Apple Store, but its no Companion 2 soundwise. I really like the sound of these things with my iBook and iPod. Really!
