I would say yes, the Vanguard date is pretty representative of the whole set, the set is pretty consistent in that manner. The material with Farrell on the Jones. . . most of it has been availalbe on separate cds, and who knows, that is the material I think would be most likely to be reissued in the future. . . .

Yes, but I don't do shn files, convert to wav. files etc; I just do what I can easily import into iTunes. I've limited time to mess with this type of thing and limited skills. So the official products released, the MP3 soundboards I have found, and the audience MP3 recordings are what I'm concentrating on, and really that's a huge amount right there.

Oh good gosh yes, continue to love the soundboards! I'm loving the ones that I have as well, indeed. And I really enjoy, REALLY ENJOY, those released as Dick's Picks, just great sound and good picks of shows. . . . The audience ones just have their own flavors, and I enjoy downloading them. I don't know what I would do if there were the soundboards AND the audience to download! Most likely get really bogged down trying to listen and evaluate and choose what to burn!

Good player, yes. Sounds very "reedy" a lot of the time, and is used sort of the way a synthesier would be for texture in a more electric setting.

I'm kindof glad they got rid of those soundboards availability wise. . . I'm enjoying the audience tapes in a different way. On the best of them you're really right there! Someone is shouting right behind you, around you, in front of you. . . I've had some really interesting moments walkinga bout with headphones! I'm really glad to have them. I'm up to 1972 now, and hope to polish off that year and then pause and savor. . . .

I've been listening to "Time Lines" lately and can honestly say the more I listen to this one, the more I like it. If I keep playing it, soon I'll love it!

It just doesn't matter that much to me! I'm not consumed with audiophilic passion for this sort of thing. I personally would guess that Maureen and Rudy are handling these masters quite well, and wouldn't necessarily trust what Hoffman says otherwise.

Go ahead. I avoid that place like the plague. I'm not interested in 45rpm sets and minutiae of the process or pronouncements by the Hoffman demigod.

I too think there's exciting stories still to be told about the Acid Test years and the role of the Beat and Prankster figures in the shaping of the Dead, etc. I'm very interested in this . . . .

I don't believe MP3 encoding would cause all these image shifts though, Lon... I don't know what to believe about that, to be honest. Have to say that I really like the sound of those cds I've bought (Lockjaw, Etta, Monk, Hawk, Miles, KD). These dropout and image shift problems. . . probably master tape problems. . . . I guess the question is: do we want what there is on the master tape, seems to me that could be a goal of the series, to get what's on the master tape, and I'll personally accept what's on the master tape, I think, when encountered. No one is forcing us to buy these, and my plan I guess is to get those that I most want the upgrade to, next on my list is the Lateef.

Yup, I've read the Jackson bio, and am getting the same story. But, I'm so bored here in Houston, and it's entertaining me.

Yes indeed. The mono lps are better, but not without problems IIRC.

I ordered this. . . I have no James Brown of this vintage and this is likely a really good series . . . . Also ordered a four cd set of Tom Jones for my wife. . . 20 bucks. And if you're a Peggy Lee fan, check out the "Classics & Collectibles" imported two cd set they're selling for 10 bucks! This is a really nice set with some rareties inside including duets with Jim Backus. . . and Jimmy Rowles.

Well, I'm not handing him a pass. I think it's weird. . . . Why aren't there lawyers all over it? Has he done some legal work already, behind the scenes, in advance of release? I sure don't have answers.

Third time through, and I'm enjoying this one. Nice bass clarinet and trumpet and accordian.

Well, what I meant by "stereo lp like" was that the channel separation was not as pronounced as on a lot of contemporaneous cds, more like that channel separation on lps. I had to have Mosaic replace a few cds on that Mosaic set that had skipping and other problems. After that I had a set that I like. . . .What I like about these cds is that they erred by omission; they didn't have a thin shrill sound like some others, for example the Rivers and Morgan.

I have the cd set. The stereo separation is not as wide as some of the McMastered cds I've in my collection, but stereo separation there is (sounds sort of stereo lp like to me).
