Darn, too bad you missed her! Jim, yes, I've noticed too the chameleonesque qualities of her voice. Sometimes I hear Minnie Ripperton sweeness and light, sometimes there's a Chaka Khan earthiness, sometimes there's that Stevie Wonder like authority and wisdom. . . . Her cascading and contrapuntal backgrounds are killer as well. Nobody seems to do it better. As you say, you sum up all this stuff, the poetic nature of her lyrics, the supple strength of her music, the wise choices of the production, the very "vibe" she brings. . . . Just like 'lectric Miles, I tell ya, even down to shifting sonic sounds of her lead instrument from work to work! MASSIVE talent. I'm spreading the word.

What's the going price on a Nat King Cole Mosaic (CD)?
jazzbo replied to David Ayers's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
We'll see. I have the Mosaic set, bought from Mosaic. But since that time I've seen a large number of sides released. I dare say it's debatable whether one needs to have ALL of these sides. There's plenty out now and there will be more. . . . -
Guy, I think with what I konw of your tastes you'll like all the Mingus of the late fifties through midsixties. . .it has that vibe and feel of exploration but passion passion passion throughout. I never really tie ED and Handy together at all in my listening/hearing. If there really are similarities I'd think they're pretty much spontaneous combusting rather than one of them zooming the other.

It's such a wonderful set! If you wait long enough though you're likely to be able to get it all in separate more recent Capitol cd submissions. . .seems they'll keep putting these out til they get to all this material. -
Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury / Question
jazzbo replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for clearing that up Guy! I'm regrettably far away from my collection, making due with an Apple laptop loaded down with music and a few dozen cds. Obis? I used to use these as bookmarks. . .and I don't save them. Ohwell! -
Some cool KD on this one: (two covers, same material)

I'm amazed at how different, and yet stylistically joined by her talent and leadership and charm, the cds I have been enjoying of hers are. Right now it's "Delicious Poison" which has such a great mellowness at its core. Great Rhodes and bass work.

Von Freeman "The Great Divide"

And I really like KD trumpeting with Bird on Verve and live . . .he was really "on" with Parker.

I'm a big fan of Quiet Kenny, and I love the RVG, a great reissue. KD was quite a guy and player. I think his work is pretty uniformly topnotch. I like the Riversides and the Blue Notes a lot. I'd get the two cd Cafe Bohemia, it's a good place to start. . . .

Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury / Question
jazzbo replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If I remember correctly only Volume 1 had that many booklets; I think the others all had only one. -
Yes, Monday. . . man. . . she deserves the treatment for sure by just such a label as BN! I do believe the suits could find themselves happy with the results. And record buyers too. . .

Non-Smartass Religion Question for Believers

I think so too, and it's dangling material like this out there that has really wreaked havoc on the board I mentioned above (nonjazz). . . . It's dangerous walking and talking. . . . -
Non-Smartass Religion Question for Believers
jazzbo replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Jim wrote: We tend to think of the OT as "Point A" and the NT as "Point B". But in reality, the NT is "Point C". A lot of things happened between the end of the OT and the beginning of the NT. A lot. The various inter-testamental writings are the true "Point B". They're not going to be of interest to anybody whose beliefs are set-in-stone dogmatic, but for anybody with an open mind and an intellectual curiosity (regardless of their faith or lack thereof), they make for some illuminating and fascinating reading. This is very true, and many don't realize how much Christian literature was in play before the NT became the NT as we know it, and how differently many Christians viewed Jesus and his teachings. I find it so fascinating myself how little his teachings are given more than lip service with many churches and "believers". . .. Fascinating and disheartening. I've read what I could of his official and now considered unofficial teachings, and I find them so radical to empire and empire building. To me it all seems directed at a kingdom rather of HEAVEN (which I always get the sense from Jesus is an earthly kingdom, the rule the way God wants things to be on earth) that would turn the way our human world has long been run on its ear. It's so ironic to me that the Empire swallowed the religion and digested it into something else. . . . I've gotten sandblasted (that's just short of being stoned) on another board for my thoughts, so I'll keep most of them to myself. But yeah, there was so much going on there in that world that Christianity sprang from. . . from mystery religions of men-gods torn apart and dying and rising again, to mother goddesses who bore sons who were murdered and then avenged, to ascetics who fastidiously bathed and tried to scrape the material world from their minds, to people who couldn't wait to stand and be washed in the sacred blood . . . weird melting pot and a real boiling caudron of energy and influences. I also don't think it's safe to make assumptions about Jesus and about Christianity without looking beyond OT and NT, but that's just me. -
Oh yeah Claude, I think she'd be an okay choice. A better choice than ____________ _________ (several possible entries here).

Non-Smartass Religion Question for Believers
jazzbo replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
that's a good one Chuck. I don't know. . . . Jesus talked about "Father," and he was including us in that immediate family, as having the same father. So the heck with the house of David, it's the house of the Father that he claims is important. I don't believe he's the only way, I don't believe necessarily that he was more divine than you or I. I do believe he was one helluva teacher who remains relevant today and probably always will remain relevant in a world of humans. -

IIFC, descent is from the MOTHER in this culture and time (and I believe even now among the Jewish). So it is descent from Mary that traces Jesus the son of Joseph to David. -

This was announced as a K2 remaster, but never materialized. I would have preferred the K2 reissue. Not me! Will be glad to have this one and the Monk as RVGs!
-
Many many more!

I tune it out too. Easily. With Bud, Monk and many others as well. But I still think this is HILARIOUS.
