  1. I'll bet the only extra material on the Shaw will be the material that was on the other studio lp. . . . I feel THAT in my bones from Columbia!
  2. And on top of tha! I've had both the VJC two cd set and the newish Storyville two cd set. . . which sounds best yet.
  3. Yes really, about time. I love the Jamal stuff and am glad it is out outside of Mosaic and Japanese cds, and I think many here will enjoy the Blakey and the Silver. . . I've never heard the Brookmeyer or Getz or Gordon.
  4. Marvin Gaye, the Detroit mix of What's Goin' On, was in the mix this morning. As well as a lot of Stan Getz. And Miles at the Keystone Korner 1975.
  5. I haven't ordered it, at least yet. But I'm happy to know it's out there. (I can handle lofi, I really can).
  6. Me either! From da bastards! Nelson Williams -- Five Horn Groove & Nelson Williams All Stars Gigi Gryce/Art Farmer -- Bebop In Paris Vol 2 Henri Renaud -- Henri Renaud & Al Cohn Quartet Henri Renaud -- Henri Renaud All Stars(Nous Rapporte Des USA Vols 1 & 2)
  7. Wow, never knew about that cd Brownie! Thanks. Due to this thread. . . I went and ordered four more Vogues from dah bastards!
  8. Right on Dr. J, I'm right where you are. jazzhound, granted some fifties and sixties and seventies tube products are going to have flabby bass and a really creamy sound that may not be accurate. But modern tube designs don't sound that way at all unless they are designed to. Dr. J's system will have the accuracy of the solid state world PLUS that magic dimensionality that a great tube system has. My Decware amps (single-ended EL34 tube amps) have the tightest bass I've ever heard and overall the cleanest less glary treble, but also have that magic that tubes bring. I'm personally no fan of distortion--I've done lots of amateur recording with entry level solid state gear and had to struggle to get clear and clean sound so I know what distortion is about at the recording end at least. And I don't hear distortion in my system (tube output modified Sony SACD player into single ended tube amplifiers into "Radial" speakers, soon to also include a very simple tube preamp).
  9. That online version has worked fine for me in helping me collect the Chicago and NYC recordings and I haven't found it to steer me wrong. I'm not that anal and this is anal enough for ME.
  10. I'm a Ventura fan. I just felt the former recommendation thread had said enough!
  11. A great resource I've been enjoying for seven years or so I think! The discography is very well done and was very helpful to me in regards the Chicago and NYC periods especially.
  12. I really enjoy this Water Records reissue as well. Usual excellent production from Water, and this music is so fun; brings me back to my college days at UofC where many of the local Chicago bands that you might see at a bar or a party were playing a similar blend of musical influences, though none quite as tight and energizing as Baby Huey and the Baby Sitters!
  13. Okay, my apologies, I pulled that off a webpage, the wrong name for Wayne's wife. I feel sad for him every time I think about his loss. I know how devestated I would be for a long time.
  14. I like all the bands for their different aspects (and I'm a fan of tasty or slightly wild electric guitar so I like Lucas and Cosey for those respective reasons). I'm amazed at what stuff has turned up in the last few years of these bands; I once thought I had cornered everything that I knew about which was true for a while but now I have things to hunt for again and that's a good thing!

Yeah, I'd like to see Phil Napolean and Wingy Manone Capitol twofers!
  17. Which may mean he may have needed a bigger place!
  18. Yes, that Coleman Hawkins dvd is very good. . . nice to have Lester on there. Thanks for the recap of all the Billie appearances.
  19. No, I haven't had a chance. . .
  20. Okay, not what you asked. An alternate name though. . .Keiko, the certainly lady-like late wife of Wayne Shorter.
  21. 22. Let's see I bought the original cd, the JRVG. . . I'll certainly get this new Hope as well! B-) Hope fascinates me. That trio from the neighborhood, Monk, Powell and Hope, can't be beat!

There were a number of great trumpeters those days. Ruben Reeves always gasses me. Bubber. . . wow. Bubber was something else. I have all the Jabbo I've been able to find. Berigan came along and amazed. Jack Purvis. Johnny Dunn. Wingy Manone. I really enjoy the music of this time period. So fun and full of energy and life!
  24. I hope they use the McLean, cuz I'm likely to like it more than their new idea. . . .
