It's not true. Red was recorded about the same time as Bix. . not years afterwards. And he had more professional band experience before he was recorded than Bix did. Influenced, yes, particularly phrasing. But a disciple? That is certainly not the word I would choose.

Some overlap with the first one I recommended, but man this is a good one.

Personally, I don't view him as a Bix disciple. He was pretty "formed" before he would have been able to idolize Bix, and yes he did copy some of the sound perhaps but he was essentiall different. Just how I hear it.

Three great cds! With Red I think you really have to like the music of the twenties and early thirties and be able to cope with the different sonics these present. To my ears his stuff from the forties on up just wasn't quite as exciting to listen to. . . there are a few moments but. . . .

If you can find it, this one is great! This one is very good!

Went to see Kingdom of Heaven this weekend. Have a mixed reaction to the film. I feel that visually it was very impressive. I feel that the story line seemed to congest so much into so little time and the personal history of the main character was quite in fact ridiculously improbable. On the other hand I felt they made an interesting character out of the king of Jerusalem, and that their handling of Saladin was majestic and quite reverential and I liked that. Recommended if swords and sandals are your thing.

An hour to live. . . I'll spend it with my wife and not my music collection. If for some odd reason I found myself in such a ridiculous situation as to be in a listening booth I'd try to get out of it and think of her if I could not.

I preordered those boxes from cduniverse.com and they were cheaper still: got all four plus shipping for 88 dollars!

I agree that those two Django discs are wonderful, I love them. . . ! It's just a guess, but I think you'll reallly enjoy the box sets. I ordered them all at a great price from cduniverse and was bowled over by their beautiful packaging and the excellent booklets and the wonderful sound. Yes, i have nearly all the discs in the series. There is a numbrer of tracks that don't appear in the series however, and all are nicely compiled and a very pleasing and stimulating listen.

The Free America cd led by FrankWright has some wonderful Bobby Few thereon.

Second option for me, and so voted. Not played that often not because I don't like it, it's among his best as a leader, I just have so much to listen to and many many sessions are neglected (but many new ones savored!)

Jim, the sound on this set is amazing! It even trounces DSD remastered cds from Sony Japan. AND there are a few items never out before and those added minutes to the Antibes numbers . . . Worth ordering this set from yourmusic.com for sure! I was one of those people who had to have it right away and paide over 100 . . . . And I'm not complaining because this is one of the best of the box sets.

I didn't hear about it either, though even if I had I would have probably not made it as Friday nights are literally the worst night of the week for me to go out (almost always have to work late and then get home to an exhausted wife and by the time dinner is made and consumed toothpicks have to be applied to keep my eyelids open). BUT I would have liked to have had the ability to plan to maybe make it or to choose not to go! When I first moved her 25 years ago the Armadillo was becoming history and people were walking around saying "this town just isn't what it used to be" as Reaganomically-displaced Northerners were arriving in town and taking all those high paying jobs like working for moving companies and landscaping outfits. I was scratching my head then, but nowdays I sometimes resemble that remark.

I don't know if there is any other type! I don't know what yourmusic.com is shipping, but I've only ever seen the metal spine edition. Have they released another so soon?

Alright, I have the cd of the Hodes and I LOVE it. I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun listening and transferring (IF you like transferring, I do most of the time though sometimes it can be frustrating!)

Right now I'm listening to one of the beautiful "Mosaic like" (but with LOADS OF COLOR!) Jazz in Paris box sets, so no need to feel sorry for me!
