  1. No, it's a label that issues Japanese releases of select jazz titles, as far as I can tell a legitimate one--but I can't say that with certainty. I don't know what equipment they use, but I would like to see more reissues and issues sounding this good. They also are well-packaged.

    Don Bagley

A few days ago I pulled his three leader sessions out to listen to and listened to the middle one (with Woods and Costa). I'll get to the other two (with Jimmy Rowles on piano) soon. I like these. It seems after the advent of rock he moved to music for film and TV and must have done okay. He was an interesting musician, that's for sure.
  3. Missed it by that much (October that is). “The October Suite” Steve Kuhn, Gary McFarland, Verve cd 400×354 24.1 KB
  4. An early trio recording by the man who would become Peter Nero shortly thereafter. “Bernie Nerow Trio” Mode/Muzak Records Japan lp facsimile cd. Like all these Muzak reissues the remastered sound is wonderful. 300×299 9.81 KB
  5. Stanley Cowell “Brilliant Circles” Freedom/Muzak Records lp facsimile cd Wow. Haven’t heard this session in a long time and it is delivering. 599×600 53 KB Two alternates on this issue. Cowell on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Tyrone Washington on tenor and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums
  6. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Roots & Herbs” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD 600×600 77.8 KB Another really good remaster.
  7. Okay, I don't usually enjoy celeste, but Meade Lux Lewis is making it sing and swing. "Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions" Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VII
  8. Don Bagby “Jazz on the Rocks” Regent/Savoy on Blue Moon cd 295×300 13.9 KB Don Bagley (b), Phil Woods (as), Eddie Costa (p, vib), Sal Salvador (g), Charles Persip (d)
  9. Another really warm fall morning. . . should be beautiful before the rain scheduled to dampen the Halloween outings of neighborhood kiddos. Revisiting this Sun Ra recording from 1970. Although the music is not that special for Ra recordings, and features the sort of performance art philosophy that honestly turns me off and away from a lot of jazz that is at the very fringes of the tradition, the recording is truly fascinating, showing the depth and vitality of the sound in the theater–a good system really transports you into an audience seat. Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra “Paradiso Amsterdam 1970” Bobby Hutcherson “Happenings” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD A very favorite recording in excellent new mastering.
  10. Marty Grosz et al “Remembering Louis” Jump Records cd
  11. “Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VI 500×500 97.3 KB The amazing Fats Waller!
  12. Dave Young Quintet “Mainly Mingus” Justin Time cd Starting off a warm Indian Summer morning with some MIngus interpretations. Nice! As an owner of a number of bass instruments I like bassist led sessions.
  13. In my opinion they are all consistently mastered. If you enjoy the sound of one you'll LIKELY enjoy the sound of any of them. That's all I will say--it's so diverse what one thinks is great and what another thinks is great. . . rooms, personal tastes, hearing, system components are all so different. I also have a very flexible system with settings on my power regenerator and a tubed EQ device. . . these allow me to really enjoy albums others don't. So. . . if you enjoy the differences with "Unity" you will likely enjoy the sound of other titles in the series. Their biggest fault imo is that they don't contain alternates or additional material. Now playing One of my favorite albums of the decade. Joel Ross “NuBlues” Blue Note cd
  14. Red Garland “Swingin’ on the Korner–Live at the Keystone Korner” Elemental 2 cd set, disc 2
  15. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Roots & Herbs” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

  17. The second half of disc 5 (again) before I move on to disc 6 Bob Dylan and The Band “Live Recordings 1974”
  18. Horace Silver “Silver’s Serenade” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD 500×497 17.3 KB Horace with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor and Roy Brooks.
  19. “Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc V Re-listening to the second half of this disc V for the Tatum sides which though I have them elsewhere have not heard in some time and just thrill at their inventive and masterful nature.
  20. I can't speak towards your memory. I don't remember one either other than some appearances of tracks a bit before on comps. That 1974 date is clearly stated in wikipedia. May be wrong. It may be referring to a Japanese release as well, as it notes CBS/Sony, but does reference Teo as producer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Miles
  21. “Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc V Hot jazz with some sultry Martha Tilton (really never paid much attention to her before this set!) and then a lot of great solo Art Tatum.
  22. Freddie Hubbard "Breaking Point" Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD A favorite Hubbard. James Spaulding!
  23. A warmer morning, Fiona the dachshund has her appetite back this morning, which is re-assuring. I stood and listened to an owl for a few minutes. Love this plot of land across from the forest. I’m breaking in a new pair of output tubes (Shuguang Black Treasure 300B-Z) and put on this old favorite to hear what condition the condition is in. A few more full days of power on before the tubes are really broken in. Antonio Carlos Jobim “Stone Flower” (CTI RVG King Jazz Japan SHM-CD) 1500×1500 91.2 KB
  24. And it was reissued on "1958 Miles" (US 1974, Japan 1979 et al)
