Well, those little snippets were designed for actual performance points in a mass, so yeah, they don't hold up as well as part of a cohesive concert experience. I dig them though. Hmmm. . . I thought it WAS Leon yodeling. Will have to relisten with an ear to possibilities later on. . . . What grabbed and thrilled me about this release is how it has captured the SOUND that MLW creates from the piano so well. Mary was a master of all the elements of the piano, but I'm fascinated with the individual sound that pianists can conjure up, and I love to hear MLW's when I can (wish I had been able to hear her live!) This recording has moments when even with a chorus and a flute or french horn and an electric bass and drums going you can hear her notes ring out distinctively, and you can feel the resonance she gets out of the body of the piano. Wonderful!

Marty, as far as I can tell from reading, Leonardo WAS the movie, he was the one fighting to have a movie made about Hughes, who maybe had the rights to do so, etc. He was going to be the actor no matter what! I felt that the OCD was actually pretty well displayed. . . . Living closely with someone with mental illness I felt that they got that part of it pretty right while still dealing with it delicately. . . . I don't like Leonardo much, but on the whole I think he did a good job on this film.

That looks like a good beginner's amp; I have a cheap Marshall that is a 20 watt model and this looks better than that (and the Marshall is okay). . . . The Randall looks rugged and more than he'll need for some time to come. (Just don't let him discover TUBE amps! I have never fully warmed up to my Marshall in part because I know how much better tube amps sound!) I've never heard any Randall amps, but a penpal of mine has said they are good value for money amps.

Wes, one of my favorite Weston interpretations is "Little Niles" on "This is Dollar Brand" (Black Lion). Nice solo piano! Then there is that "The Warm Sound of Johnny Coles" lp/cd. Man. That is sort of a Weston session in disguise!

I generally watch as much as I can stand (before falling asleep, it goes past my bedtime). IF you follow the year's movies it adds a level of interest; I have been following movies the last four or five years and so I've been watching the Oscars. Enjoying most of what transpires before I go to bed. I worked yesterday afternoon though, was tired, didn't make it much past Natalie Portman's presenting an award. . . glad Jamie won, wish there had been a different big picture win (NOT a boxing movie fan).

Hmmmh. . . in a way with those earliest recordings, with the Taylor piece, with the interviews and all the tremendous info in the book, this IS the way to get started on Ayler. Greg, I think you're in for a real journey that I'm betting you'll enjoy.

Used cd stores here are full of Miles Davis and Duke Ellington product too. Fact of the matter is I had just finished listening to Jackie McLean sing Wynton's praises on a live performance, introducing him on to join in on a number or two, he doesn't seem to think Wynton deserved to be kicked around like a dead horse or Leslie Gourse's corpse (obviously another sore spot with me). I apologize, you're entitled to your opinion, I just get tired of the most outrageous ones (this and the Norah "talentless hack" one just make me steam). I'm sorry, back on track with Al selling books (I've bought two I hope).

I don't know Ted. . . there's quite a few fans out there. . .would probably sell as quickly or more so than the Mildred Bailey for example. . . . ! (I really don't think Mosaic is too worried about quick sales as long as they can over time sell the majority of the leased amount of copies. . . )(that's just my impression, no real knowledge).

I'm with Chuck solidly on this one (save I haven't yet had the pleasure of working with him). I'm one hundred and one percent a Weston fan, I've been tracking down anything he does, and this Select has some of the very best of his first decade of work within it. LOVE it!

The Baby Huey is very interesting to me, a lot of the bands I saw in Chicago in the period of '73 to '76 had the sound one way or another that Baby Huey and the Baby Sitters came up with. It's a blend of the sort of sounds that James Brown and Buddy Miles Express and Howlin' Wolf and many another band (including a bit of Santana) had at the time. . . well, it's black music and it's very powerful and trippy. I'm enjoying it a lot; the jazzy bits, and the dramatic bits that Huey injects. . . he was a great singer, it's a tight band, it's fun music.
