  1. Hmmmm. . . I'm pretty sure we CAN have all the stuff already. But what the hell, the Mosaic will be something to have later on. . . .
  2. Pee Wee sketch by Jimmy Hamilton!
  3. Older. . .wiser?
  4. Young young Pee Wee. . . a friend of mine calls this "Where can I get a clarinet?"
  5. With Max and Davey!
  6. Let's share favorite photos of a unique clarinetist! Here's one with his galpal Linda Keene (and part of Eddie Condon)
  7. What, you mean we're NOT all nuts?
  8. Yes on many for me. It's mostly my wife's clutter, but it's all over. USED to bug the hell out of me. Used to it now and it keeps my house from being overrun with houseguests!
  9. I'm going to use the insanity defense . . .
  10. I've never seen these books. If Morganstern has an intro in one, I bet it is a pretty solid book as far as facts and fancy. . . .
  11. Well. . . I'm not sure that my thoughts will help you; I like the trio albums best. Largely because. . . well I love piano trios, and Pullen was such a unique talent that I love his being so richly presented in the trio format. AND. . . I"ll put on my heat resistant suit. . .a little bit of Adams goes a long way with me. I really DO like his work, but I find myself tiring of him sooner than I do Pullen. So. . . I listen to the trio albums more. I haven't heard many European trio albums from Pullen, so I can't really compare them. Sonicwise. . . I think there is some improvement in this new version, but the original cds didn't sound horrible, and I wouldn't buy this just for the sound.
  12. It's good music, the sound is nice, but I'm not sure if you had it all or most of it if an upgrade is necessary. . . .
  13. EXACTLY! It's almost an affectionate term. . . .
  14. To my knowledge no, not on cd anywhere else . . . NICE COVER, Duke must have liked that one! The Mosaic is one of those blessings from God that that company has been a part of.
  15. I have that and I'm not sure I interpreted it that way. . . . It seemed in line with almost all the other stage patter I've heard from Duke, acknowledging the audience's admiration and desire to hear more Monk; I didn't get a vibe of petulance or anything else from it, but . . . videotape would be more definitive. Who's got it>
  16. It definitely sucks, especially not being able to down big slugs of cold WHOLE milk! No big deal, at least so far; I've been discovered to have a fluctuating irregular heartbeat that seems to be puzzling my doctor and now a cardiologist. Spent an awful lot of copay dollars to discover not much so far. Going to have the treadmill stress test Monday.
  17. Damn, and now on doctor's orders for about five more weeks I can't eat either! BLAST IT ALL!
  18. Knowing his surly disposition I had always thought it was like a condensation of "Throwing a Jordan," of "Fuck YOU". . . hence "Jordu". . .
  19. "Bud Powell did, too, but he transformed Monk's music into his bebop piano world, as if it were the same tunes written by another man." So, Monk's music has to remain in Monk's world? The man was unique, but no one can play his music and pull it out into the common world?
  20. Danny D'Imperio (DeFrano - Goodman, Herman, Rich *posthumous*, Maynard et al) Joe Lovano (Mel Lewis, Herman, as mentioned above, others too I think)
  21. Sure, as soon as I get all the stuff. . . there's a Mosaic. TYPICAL.
  22. Well, I don't disagree in principle with what you're both saying except. . . I don't know I feel some sort of elitist standard applied to Monk music. . . . I'm just so against jazz elitism these days, it just makes me ill. I'm still saying that a lot of Monk treatments work without trying to tie new ribbons all over his hats. . . . I like some treatments others don't (for example Wynton's is alright with me, if for no reason other than I have literally seen it introduce Monk to listeners that hadn't heard him or grasped him before), and I don't think that the perceived "more" going on in Monk music means that only exceptional care and effort must be put into it. . . .Sheesh. Anyway that's me.
  23. Many happy returns!
  24. The Holman deserves serious mention and scrutiny. It's very HOLMAN but it's a nice Monk program . . . it took me a while to warm up to but I think it's worth listening too. It has sat on my shelves about four years and annually I rediscover it. . . . I sort of think in some ways it's not necessarily correct to expect incredible reinventions of Monk in a way one doesn't of Ellignton or Powell or Parker or Garner or Mulligan. I really loathe most "tributes" of Monk or almost anyone. I don't view the Monk Riverside disc as a tribute, or the Walter Davis Mapleshade of Monk as a tribute, more these folks doing the music of another creator. And that's the way I like it. To me if Monk tunes are done on an album by an artist in much the same manner a Coltrane or Evans or a Carter or a Timmons tune would be. . . well that's good enough for me.
  25. I can agree with what you're saying. . . but not if you are saying that Monk interpretations by Powell, Flanagan, Weston, Harris and some others are just based on the Monk mannerisms. . .
