  1. Hey, I used to be a drummer. . . . I kept my eyes open and watched the dancers (assuming there were dancers, there were 90% of the time). I sort of fed on their participation. And watching people dancing is calming and pleasing (I was usually pretty nervous at the beginning of any gig). And in rehearsals in one band that represented more than half my experience I always watched the pick hand of the guitarist that wrote most of the material and felt he was the boss. He was a stickler for perfection and he had these intricate arrangements with stop time breaks etc. that sort of nettled me. . . (I wanted to GROOVE). By watching this pick hand I somehow was cued in more as to where the song was and was going. I know few drummers who play a lot with eyes closed!
  2. About to start:
  3. To me on my system the whole set sounds thinner and "more tart" than the separate cds I have. . . .
  4. I would agree with Chuck. That is not Wayne. I can't see Bu letting a sideman be featured without him on a cover either.

    Polskie Nagrania

I have these. . . I like them a lot. . .I wish I had MORE. . . I think for once the 'Stards get the description right! Andrzej Trzaskowski Sextant with Ted Curson -- Seant -- Polish Jazz Vol 11 Andrzej Trzaskowski -- Polish Jazz Vol 2 (Andrzej Trzaskowski Quintet/Sextet) Krzysztof Komeda -- Polish Jazz Vol 3 . . . Andrzej Kurylewicz Quintet -- Go Right Zbigniew Namyslowski -- Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet -- Polish Jazz Vol 6 Krzysztof Komeda -- Polish Jazz Vol 5 -- Astigmatic (even though it's also on Vol 3! Came with the booklet for the Komeda box for the cost of a cd)
  6. Oh how I remember how thrilled I used to be to have a Mosaic booklet in my hands and spin disc after disc of a set. . . . I'm so jaded now! No, I have more demands on my time and less interest in just sitting and pouring through discogrpaphic information and someone else's impressions of the music. I just breeze through liners now and I listen to the music. . . . I love to get a Mosaic set and spend a week spinning the discs. . . . It's still a big deal!
  7. I've read these before. I think it's quite interesting in a number of ways. Sometimes he heard the INFLUENCES in a player but didn't know the player. And I found it fascinating that he knew it wasn't Duke on the piece with Hodges and Webster. This was during his "no one done Bird right yet and Ornette is gonna rock everyone's world" phase! I'd have loved to see him at any time, but especially around this time Ray!
  8. Just between you and me, Wolf says you have to hear the vinyl to really HEAR M!
  9. Good move Stef, nice way to share this work! I like these even better than those I saw before, especially like the material from the New Mexico trip.
  10. It really is almost too good to be true. I'm sure enjoying MINE!
  11. To be honest, I think it may be unfair to blame yourmusic when the problem likely lies in the use of media rate mail. (Which is after all free to the buyer, and cheap for half.com). In my own personal experience outside of yourmusic.com with media mail it generally takes four to six working days as a norm, and can take as long as ten to twelve sometimes. And about 2% of the time I notice that they don't arrive. At all. For my personal use mailing material to anyone I don't use it.
  12. I also really like that "Spellbinder," which I have on Impulse cd from Japan; one of my favorites of his sessions, period.
  13. I had poo-poo'd the Lateef before, but I was confused, thinking CTI instead of Impulse. . . this is a pretty decent record, and I'm looking forward to it. The New Grass I've got as a K2 Japanese Impulse cd and I really like it. I don't know that I'll buy it again having spent the import dollars for a great sounding copy, but Ayler fans should really enjoy this. . . or not. . .depending on how they feel about the final shift in h is presentation. I'm really looking forward to the Pharoah. When I'm in the right mood and situation, his entire Impulse catalog is da bomb for me.
  14. Spun it at 6 a. m.! Right now: Disc two
  15. Adam, thanks for sharing!
  16. I've been a bad boy too, really bad. . .a n d I got the email. 'Salright. I've nearly gotten all I want to at that price without going into the Classical realm. . . .
  17. It's one of my least played Mosaics. Mainly that's because I have nearly all of it on other discs and I reach for those instead. . . !
  18. Most that I have gotten are the same cds from any source. A few have been BMG manufactured cds. I haven't noticed any difference with those. . . .

    Horace Tapscott

I have all the volumes of the lps and yes, this is very interesting and moving music. I like Tapscott. . . I like him best solo, some of the trio work is exquisite, I'm pickier about his larger group sessions. Dark Tree for example. . . I've never warmed to those discs. In New York. . . I love. Some of the Pan Afrikan things I love. But give me his solo stuff and I'm nearly entranced!
  20. I think that India and Jill are beautiful women myself (though I like India to have some HAIR . . . . I have been listening to Jill lately and she's becoming a MASTER. I haven't heard that much of India; I liked a lot of her first album, though it didn't seem to be cohesive top to bottom. . . I imagine she's grown. I like what I've heard of Joss too. . . . I don't think she has the experience on stage and the polish that Jill and India now have, but she may. Still . . . when I want to hear singers. . . . I mainly reach for Billie, Loius, Marvin, Jack T, Carmen, Helen Merrill, Tom Jobim, Paula Morelenbaum, Elis. . . . But these people have a longer history with me, I'm comfortable and actually long to hear them.
  21. Carrie Underwood. . . Idol. . . gosh I hope not.
