Ah. . . it could well be a National I think, and you can see strings in this one! -
Duke Ellington : Never No Lament: The Blanton-We

I'm not sure. Does that thing even have strings? Ellington pretended to be playing it in another photo from that session. . . I need to see that photo again! -
Almost looks like a Paul Gulacy drawing!

Duke Ellington : Never No Lament: The Blanton-We

Wow. Maybe it's just my decades of listening to this stuff now under my belt, but these don't really sound like they ought to be skipped over to me! -
AGREED. Plus don't overdo the ones you can overdo.

I'm taking some fish oil, some vitamin C, and some vitamin E (because the fish oil can deplete that). I am definitely sold on the fish oil: my eye sight and my joints seem improved, and I bet my heart health as well (my father practically forced me to take it for heart health reasons; it has helped him, and he's probably right in thinking I inherit all the funky and weird things he has). The C seems to be helping me get through allergy seasons here; I've only been doing this about 5 months BUT there seems to be less allergy gummy eys, congestion, etc. I don't take a whole lot of either; when I remember I take a multivitamin as well, maybe about 3 times a week.

Well, I was among the many who went to see Sin City this weekend. Ultra violence in the time-honored Tarantino-Rodriguez tradition, somewhat liberated by the comic book theme and replication via digital manipulation. BEAUTIFUL women, quite interesting acting. A spectacle, a "guy thing," an adrenaline rush. Very Frank Miller, very much like an Eisner that embraced the dark side. . . .

I don't know what that reviewer was listening to but it doesn't sound like what I hear. -

I would say exactly what Harold said! -
Paul, thanks for that correction; I have edited the post above. Yes, I remember seeing Rob in the early to mid-eighties myself, and I was just relaying what I was told by another attendee of the event re: NYC. I DO know he wasn't around this scene, he would have stood out as a pillar!

On March 30 I saw the David Wild Trio with guest Rob Lockart live at the Elephant Room, Austin, Texas. It was quite a nice evening for me as I got to introduce two jazz buddies of mine to each other, and had the next day off so I could stay later than I usually do. I had been looking forward to seeing the enigmatic David Wild, and I got to meet him and he's a very friendly and inteligent and vivacious man, and quite a fount of jazz wisdom. But for me the real highlight was Rob Lockart's tenor and soprano playing. This was the most advanced tenor playing I've had the joy to hear in person in the last years outside of Sam Rivers last year, and his mastery of the tenor on a blistering (tempowise) Oleo just floored the visible audience. Wow. His work reminded me of Coltrane and Henderson but he had his own style blooming. From what I gather Rob was an Austin player, left to go to NYC, and is back at least for a spell. If you get a chance to seet his man perform, take a chance, I bet you will really enjoy his playing.

Which alto player sounded the most like Bird?
jazzbo replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
In some ways I'd say McPherson. The man had/has that sort of underground spring bubbling up thing sometimes in a way that Bird had (more often) -
That dosn't seem to be how it hits ME. Especially "Concert in the Garden" which doesn't seem conventional to me at all. "Lacking in sonic ambition?" A lot of things that are sonically ambitiious I don't necessarily enjoy, so this is not a fault for me if true. Sure there may be nothing earthshattering and groundbreaking there. But there is real, deep beauty in the sound and playing that I find very moving. It's a personal response; I can understand if another didn't have it. I wonder how the March 28 Jazz at Lincoln Center broadcast was. I'm pretty sure I'll get to hear it soon. Probably was an experience!

Thanks Agustin. Those look GREAT!

Amazing book isn't it Harold. I just this morning finished rereading The Divine Invasion. A stupendous work. . . I was especially impressed with it this time. It grows in depth as my life experience does! Now back to "Half Slave, Half Free" . . . I needed a break from it halfway through.

Yes, I ordered the Solal-Bechet and the Solal Volume 4 before my wallet screamed and ran out of the rooom. . . . Oh, they also have a new cd version of the Gitte Haenniing and Clark Boland Big Band session that I managed to get in before fiscal calamity transpired.

Well, not JUST alternates, but also material recorded live, material never released commercially live and studio, etc. FANTASTIC series of discs. Their demise is lamented still!

Hmmm. . . well to elaborate MY feelings a little. . . I like albums that step outside the norm, the formula, and some of the BN albums are so much "one thing"--hard bop, greazy soul jazz, whatever that Moncur stuff is (I won't repeat my old term for it), etc. The Hutcherson albums cited seem to be a nice blend that removes that "one thing"ness and also seem a progression of the session, that is they seem to "fit" somehow to me with the time and nature of Hutch's musical thinking and the participants all seem to be "into it." So. . . they don't bother me and they don't bother my sense of a "cohesive album"--I like the variety they introduce. Now if all of a sudden in the middle there was music a la Guiseppi Logan's ESPs or Bley's "Barrage" ESP for instance, that would be . .. surprising. .. maybe even a little pleasant, but would seem bothersome!

None of the Hutcherson stuff bother me at all.

I won't choose. I can't do wihout either of them!

So little talk about Dexter Gordon Select
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hey 7-1/2 ips tapes. . . I've heard many and they can sound really good. To my ears the difference between the earlier discs and the new ones are that the earlier ones sound beefier, a bit darker, and the new ones are thinner sounding. I prefer the former for the most serious of listening sessions. . . It's not a huge difference.
