And I personally think that most of the players suffer from having output stages that just don't cut it for me. My amps and speakers reveal their failings. After hearing better implemented power supplies and tubed output stages everything seems more musical to me and I'll not buy a stock machine from Pioneer or Sony unless it's their flagships that are ridiculously expensive or to have it modified by someone who really knows what they are doing. If I hadn't heard a few great machines that have fantastic output sections (where the machine in my opinion is made or broken) I would feel diffferently. Of course I've also over the last decade moved fully into the tubed camp rather than solid state; for me there is no going back, and if there's a machine with a tube as a source compared to an IC or transistors I'm going to gravitate there. This machine, with its design that allows one to use either a 12AT7, 12AU7 or 12AX7 tube type really allows you to tailor the sound wonderfully to your room and tastes. I go back and forth between a Telefunken 12AT7 and a Mullard 12AX7 and am so glad I can.

I love Teddy Wilson's playing, it's got such an inner strength and a driving calm to it. . . . I need music like that in my life.

Not sure about dirt cheap! Dirt cheap in comparison to highend machines, sure. And I think great bang for the buck. It's the best machine I've ever had, but I haven't had megadollar machines. It does make cds sound wonderful though. The designer really knows his stuff, and he overbuilds power supplies which has great sonic benefits in the long run but does mean a long break in time. . . . Still, I'm very happy with this machine. I guess there's a chance that it is because it is a part of a system all built by this designer; system synergy is possibly a big factor. In fact I view my system as a triple one: I have all Decware source, amps and speakers; I have all Mapleshade isolation components (Samson rack, Isoblocks and maple platforms and Triplepoint brass "Cones") and I have all PS Audio cables (power, interconnect and speaker) and a PS Audio Power Plant. It's really shining lately; I'm enjoying the heck out of music! There are lots of other options I guess. . . .I just haven't heard that many SACD machines, and I really am sold on this builder after seven years of living with his products. One limiting factor is that SACD is not available in a DAC (yet?). If it were then there would be many transport and DAC combinations possible.

I never thoutht I would be listening to dvds on the stereo either, but since I can I find I have been. . . . The new Mingus at Montreux is nice to have and be able to listen in the very best sound on my main system. The Decware player took a long time to break in and shine, but I'm very happy to have it. . . .CDs sound as good as SACDs to me on this machine!

Why are you against having DVD capability? (Just curious, I have a universal player from Sony that has been modified by Decware to have a tubed output stage coming right off the DAC that I LOVE. It can play dvd and that is nice because sometimes I listen (don't watch) to dvds that I have from Tabla Beat Science, Mingus, Flip Phillips, etc.) It may be more than you want to spend, but it's the best machine I've had. I agree with Tony, and do a lot of looking about and listening if you can. I went from some pretty nice solid state gear to vintage EICO tube gear and finally found the best system I've ever had, and where I'm stopping for some time to come in a system from Decware, a sort of cottage industry tube equipment place run by designer/drummer Steve Deckert. I have their tubed output SACD/DVD/CD player, a pair of their EL34 Monoblock amps, and their Radial RL2 speakers. I've had amps of theirs since 1997 without any problem, with lots of great sound and enjoyment. Hey John, I listened yesterday to the 1993 Savoy cd. . . I don't hear any "swooshing." I hear the tremolo effect that Costa applies as he plays, I hear it sometimes interacting with the reverb that RVG applied when he cut the master. . . .It sounds pretty cool overall, especially that sort of "digital delay" sound in his solo on the blues number. . . . I don't hear anything that sounds like recording error, just some recording manipulation (the reverb) and some really well played and recorded vibes. My ribbon tweeters really sparkle on this cd, and I love the bass solo on the blues number!

That Wilkins cd WAS available from Savoy/Denon. My guess is that it will eventually resurface on cd. . . . I love all the work that Klook did with his traps for Savoy! Amazing foundation for the music. Taste and drive!

Chuck, those Clarke-Boland recordings I recommend are all small group and have just Klook on the traps, no Clare. On Rearward there's "Calypso Blues," "All the Cats," and "Griff and Bags." And the MPS Boland Quartet group (Boland, Woode, Sadi, Clarke) is killer ("Out of the Background"). Clarke really swings hard and does amazing work on these.

Like Andrew, Klook is one of my favorites and was an inspiration for my drumming (way back when). His list looks like one I would concoct! I'll add that if you can find them his work on the Rearward small group cds of the Clarke Boland Big Band is phenomenal, as is his work in the Francy Boland Quartet recording on MPS "Out of the Background." Great stuff that I reach for for a Klook fix!

I agree Jeff, I really don't collect the band after the return with any passion! Cary, I'll definitely check that out if they release it!

The one that I miss in the Garcia Bands is Kreutzman; that man is an incredible drummer, and he really knew how to make Jerry swing. I wouldn't miss the drum solos either, and in fact the two drummer band irritates me. . . I'm more happy with just Billy behind the skins. I'm a Weir fan though. . . .He does have his moments where he can't sing worth a damn but when he is ON I dig it a lot, and he's quite a writer and player!

Bet there were some sights to see! I saw the Dead about five times in the seventies, but have never seen any of the Jerry Garcia band shows.

This one is not really in the Pure Jerry series but is recent and quite interesting: I'm not wild about the keyboard player, but Jerry plays some amazing stuff!

Well, I really enjoy the first release in the "Pure Jerry" series, releases of live Jerry Garcia Band shows along the lines of "Dick's Picks." (Sort of). It has the dreaded Donna Jean if that is a problem for some. . . not for me. Jerry plays so well and the band is having fun and "groovin'"! There is a second one out: four cd set three cd set I haven't gotten this one yet, I ordered it and the next one and should have them in about 12 days. . . . Not sure what to expect on this one because my knowledge of the 1987 band is slim, but there are two editions really in this volume (a four cd set and a three cd set), and electric and acoustic music is included. Should be good. Anyone already enjoying these and have impressions? Finally, coming December 20 is a third one, with Merl Saunders: How can that be bad?
