  1. I've just become a stone cold Adderley nut. All the Capitol stuff I've heard I really like. Yes, sometimes you have to sort of wait til Cannon comes in but when he does. . . BAM. . . there you are on the floor. Cannon just was so deep into the music. . . . Like Jim says he was thoroughly rooted in the people, and he was constantly growing musically. I'm just floored by some of the solos he put down in his final years, from "Mercy Mercy Mercy" on he just put in elements that blended deceptively with the soulful swinging ones that bowl me over. I wish that Domination, Love Themes, Africa. . .well I wish all the Capitols would be reissued individually. PLEASE! I've never heard a few like Experience in E and really want to!
  2. "Gloomy Sunday" was of course associated with Billie Holiday as well (though she didn't "introduce" the tune). (And let's not forget the Bob Brookmeyer version, right?)
  3. Damn! I still have to get that Ray Brown and Milt Jackson cd!
  4. I wish I could Walter, I wish I could, it's my idea of a guitar to own. Best of luck with the sale!
  5. I certainly haven't heard that cd. Branford can really play. I have some of his recordings and play them on occasion. He sort of lost me towards the end of the nineties because he seemed to be locked into a burnout solo bag. . . . I wanted him to play more melodic and mellow material like this you heard because he can do that very well . . . . That is probably a good cd worth pursuing.
  6. I have a few (non HDCD) cds that read with digital distortion on some of my machines and not on others. Very strange. Near the end of the cdr, in the final ten minutes or so a whirling sort of distortion. On other machines not one audible bit of distortion. I'm learning to accept little audio mysteries in the digital realm.
  7. I may have some Dick's Picks for sale soon. . . so recommend those! Another plug for "Ace"---really a Dead album in many ways, and one of the good studio ones (another favorite is Wake of the Flood--I just LOVE that lp!)

    Muse Records

Some nice titles there. Not on Muse, but those Abdullah Ibrahim titles are wonderful!
  9. Happy birthday Julian! What a player and jazz personality! I wish we could have had him around so much longer! Wish he were here today!
  10. Just ordered the Teagarden cd coming out on September 21, live from Olympia Theatre, Paris 1957. . . . CANNOT resist Teagarden I haven't heard!
  11. Lots of magic in the VeeJay years from Wayne, I get most of my Wayne fixes from those sessions these days, and the Miles sessions. . . especially some of the 1966 and 1967 live dates.
  12. Thanks Jim, I've emailed you back. I'd love to see this tape, thanks!
  13. I remember having someone call me from another of our agency's department to tell my then boss to turn on the tv that was in her office because something terrible had happened. That was a few minutes after the first plane had collided. I told her, and then I dashed to the internet to yahoo news. . . . I remember the panic I felt as my wife and I tried to reach (separately from our separate working places) my in-laws in Arlington and couldn't for several hours. Finally the relief when we discovered they were okay. . . their house shook a little as well that day. I remember feeling extreme sorrow for those in NYC and D.C. who had lost family members that day and the days that followed. (I also have to be honest and say I remember feeling from his first appearance in NYC and beyond that Bush was taking advantage of the situation, I didn't feel sincere remorse from him or feel inspired by leadership. But I already abhorred his political actions).
  14. I pm'd you Phil. I DO have the Columbia cds, since their initial release. . . I really like this broadcast though and wish I had the whole thing.
  15. No seriously, I've not seen copies of that one after it went out of print; hard to gauge though because here in Austin you don't often see a lot of used jazz cds beyond the big reissues from the big names. (Then again, I'm not a diligent scourer so disregard what I say in this matter). I think a Mosaic Select IS planned, and it will be welcome.
  16. Pretty much. Of course, now that you've gotten a copy, Blue Note has accelerated their reissue plans. Expect a Mosaic Select soon!

    Barney Wilen

    You're going to love it!
  18. Thanks to Marty for helping, I got an email from David, and he's OTAY!
  19. I'm sure it was a great show! There are parts on this recording I like better than the cd release counterpart, and probably the other way around as well.
  20. Dear Folk, I've been listening to a cassette of a NPR broadcast of Mingus' "Epitaph" work conducted by Gunther Schuller and performed in June 1989 from Wolf Trap. The cassette has just about or just over HALF the performance. I would love to be able to hear the second half of the performance! It was a very good night! If anyone has this let's talk! lonjazz@yahoo.com
  21. I just couldn't make up my mind. . . I didn't vote.
  22. Well, no one has heard from DSGTRANE (David Gardner). . . Now I'm worried!
  23. Wow, what a difference a day makes!
