My favorite lunch is a buffet at the Clay Pit, which is a ten minute walk from my "office" and always a delight! They have killer green salads tossed with their raita-like dressing and another salad that has thickly sliced mushrooms and huge olives. . . they have usually one khorma dish (I love khorma sauce!) and a few other dishes as well, and they use the best rice I've ever had, I found out what it is and bought some to use at home, it's directly from India. They also have the best chai in town! I like to go there in the evenings as well, my wife loves the food there and in the evening we usually order their aloo gobey and another dish, or sometimes just a bowl of lentil soup and their Tandoori Bites, which is a huge appetizer of their "barbequed" chicken . . . . GREAT RESTAURANT! The trick is just to eat just enough and no more. . . .

That really does look great, that Rockin' the Rhein. It IS overwhelming how much stuff there is out there; that's why I've been concentrating on just one edition of the band, and still there's a ton of material! The Rhino box set is amazingly good, well produced, well remastered, and as you say an excellent booklet. That was partly what inspired me to buy the Rhino box set of Garcia studio recordings and it too is excellently produced in all ways (and I liked the music on these recordings more than I remembered/thought I would and the extra material is killer!) I've gotten the Dick's Picks I need from the first twenty, and I have a few more to get from the next ten. . . . I think this kick I'm on is going to be a long one this time. Noj: Greyfolded: pretty astonishing work (and amount of work!)!

I like Woody's singing. I guess I'm weird. . . . I have a real affection for the session with Ruby Braff "It Had to be Us." Man, the singing on there just moves me! Not sure why. . . it just does.

You're right, the chemistry of the band members together is an important factor in the appeal and the longevity of the band. . . . I've actually been exploring some of the earliest albums for the first time in a Loooooong time. . . probably hadn't heard some of those since the mid-seventies until this year. It's interesting to hear the development of the band, and how the band sort of dealt with the loss of Pigpen to become the band that lasted then for over twenty years. . . . The work that drew me back into the listening was "Wake of the Flood." I started thinking about this album and bought a Dick's Picks that had peformances of selections from the lp, and then I bought the cd. This was an ambitious time for the band: starting their own record label, trying to organize more for themselves and to coordinate more directly with their fans. I just really enjoy the sound and structure of this album, and it was the first one I felt passionately about when it was released and after I first listened to it I was launched into my only really "Deadhead" time where I saw them a number of times and followed the solo projects etc. I think that it really holds up now 30 years later; I still love "Weather Report Suite" and "Mississippi Halfstep Toodleoo". . . !

Agreed, the Konitz and Silver material is wonderful to have. . . I sort of copied those portions for my own use. . .

Yes, Blues for Allah is an interesting album, jazzy mostly in a fusion way. . . . Going to have to get #28 if it's from 1973, I love that band with the Godchaux the most. . . not sure why. . .maybe because it is the band with just Billy on drums and I may be one of the few on the planet that likes Donna Jean's singing MOST of the time! Allman Bros. . . . There's a band I haven't heard for a long time, and probably should refresh myself with. . . or not. . . I'm getting so much stuff as it is!

What do you think, is it time for the Grateful Dead to have their own "Corner" thread? I confess that about a decade, the whole nineties, went by and I hardly heard the Dead. I was deep into jazz, gave up playing drums in rock and roll bands (I mean how many times can you really pack your station wagon full of equipment with gusto to go out and make gas money playing for drunken frat boys?) and really only Hendrix showed up on my radar from my earlier rock listening world. . . . But in the last year suddenly (and I solidly place the blame on ORGANISSIMO.ORG!) I'm buying Dick's Picks and the box set and the Garcia box set (TWICE! anyone needing a copy cheap pm me!) and . . . well. . . I'm back to being a Deadhead! What is it about them? I haven't really put my finger on it, but I think it's part Garcia's eclectic mastery of the guitar, part Billy Kreutzman's wonderful drumming, and part Weir's quirky guitar, voice and songs. . . those are the top three ingredients that keep me going back to the Dead . . . . So chime in if you're a fan and it's too bad Jeff isn't posting nowadays!

I had that cd and sold it when the Miles at Newport stuff appeared on US cd in better sound. . . don't remember the squeeling per se, but do remember the sound was not as good as later editions of the Miles set from Columbia/Sony (the two cd DSD remastering of the Miles/Monk has the complete material from both in great sound!
-
My guess is: only M-O were three track masters that needed to/could be remixed; the others were were mono and two track transfers, all the remastering and transfers by Addey.

I forgot to report on this one: MAN I DIG THIS CD. It's not entirely true that it has NO bossa nova rythm etc. to it. But it has mainly a Keith Jarrett Trio swing and pulse to it like that on "Changeless" for example (perhaps my favorite of the Trio's works!) There ar no bossa nova CLICHES within. It has a wonderful sound and feel, as the melodies are explored in a sort of Wayne Shorter way on the alto sax and a Jarrett or Solal way on the piano. . . . I'm glad to have it!

I've been enjoying this one today: A hard bossa session I'd say!

When was the last time you were disappointed in a Mosaic set? I haven't listened to this one a lot though I've had it nearly since it was released. That has more to do with the amount of material I HAVE to listen to and the choices I make. A nice set, although it's not at all the SAME thing, I think if you like the Pacific Jazz material contemporaneous to these sessions you'll enjoy these.

I have Boss Guitar and Diamond Life. I wouldn't put either in a top 25 list, but glad to have them. The others. . . well. . . the compiler's welcome to them!

I'll agree that Reggie Lucas deserves some props. That cat played mean rhythm guitar!

Thanks for the headsup on the Monk Hyena, I'd forgottent that was due out. Yes, I agree with your suggested releases, and think they would make great Water reissues. I don't have any news about their upcoming plans. . .wish I did; they have never answered any emails I've sent their way. . . .

Wow. I am enjoying these two new Water Records Blue Note reissues! The sound is excellent. Booklets and tray cards feature really nice photos. There are new notes (okay) and original notes. Here's hoping they continue to lease and release items that EMI may not!

Doesn't look as if we have any "insiders" here! Maybe you should post this at audioasylum.com and see if Greg has heard anything from "indno" Belden about these being released on cd (but ask first about SACD release to get his attention!)

Could be Kenny Wheeler trumpetin', could be Phil Seaman on drums. . . I'd say this is about 1965-6.

Happy Birthday Stefan! Woo woo!

I'm sure he wishes he could!

I do have four Sinatra cds . . .sort of. The one at the Sands with Basie. The Francis A. and Eddward K. one. The one with Jobim. And a Tommy Dorsey Clambake one that he sings on a few selections. I would say the Jobim is the best of the lot. I enjoy his singing on the Dorsey better than his Capitol era singing. I hate the one with the Ellington band with outside arrangement. And the one with Basie at the Sands has its moments both ways. Don't spin these too often.

I have the same cover you do Harold. Thanks for the information on the book.

I'm waiting for the Big Audio Dynamite box set!
