I played a Simmons kit for several years in rock and blues-rock bands here in town. During this time I couldn't afford two good kits, so I sold a funky old cheapo acoustic kit to help buy it, and it was all I had til later when I bought a Sonor set up. I actually enjoyed it; learning to play was a trip and an education, and set up for gigs was so easy. Also when the guitarist would get too loud, I would roll the volume control and goose his ass, and he'd calm down. THAT came in very handy. I ran a Gallien Kruger guitar amp AND a Sunn bass amp. I was not generally loud at all, but the sound was rich. Generally I used blasticks, because the heads on this Simmons could make your writst ache hard if you pretended they were regular Ambassador heads with spring back! And with time I learned how to hit the head to get dynamics from the system. It wasn't cheap, but it was troublefree for years, and a joy for recording: you could record directly into a tape deck in stereo, or record from mikes, or a combination of both!

Cassandra Wilson at New Jersey Performing Arts
jazzbo replied to Brad's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That's wild. I haven't grabbed the latest yet, but I've loved the two preceding a lot, and I would have expected (and may have experienced) a better show. Her music isn't traditionally jazzy on the surface, but. . . to me on the recordings at least it is really there. She's got a lot deeper shiz going on than some of these other newbie jazz singers. . . she's paid the dues and she has the smarts. -
It's definitely there: Spooky Drums No. 1 AND Spooky Drums No. 2.

Yes sweet potato pies. . .they're wonderful. I have a friend who makes a fantastic one, and she's helped me to make a pretty good one, I'm getting better all the time. I love pumpkin pie too. My great aunt Erma always had a half a dozen or so baking during the holiday season and her meals were awesome, worth the two hour travel to her Canton home from our Burton home back then, but I'd go even if there was just a slice of pie to be had. . . . Hers were special (just as any of her dishes ere special).

They're both great, but I went with sweet potato because. . .well. . . I wish I had thought to pick up the making and make one, it sure would taste good! I've been pretty successful putting things like pies out of my head lately it appears!

Yes it's John Gilmore. Thanks for posting that link.

Who's Sipping What With The Bird??

Ruta Maya coffee, real early and again soon. Milk with the meal. Who knows what after, but it won't contain alcohol. Yeah, I'm weird. -
This is probably a good idea for quite a few posters. Not ME though, I want to see the whole board, blip by blip!
-
Yeah. . .too bad it's not a likely candidate for an RVG instead!
-
But that is NOT the cd that this thread was started for! Now there are TWO Dodds talkin' and drummin' cds in print! Life is GOOD! B)
-
Claude, that's the new style of Mosaic box, without hinges.
-
Yeah, you won't be disappointed, and I think this is likely all that there is. Which may be too bad, but it's nice that it all is out again!
-
Hmmmm. . . I didn't know this was on cd before. The brass band material that is the second half of the cd is quite interesting. Rough and raw and a trip to hear, very vocal sounding horns belting out riffs. . . . I'm going to revisit this again in the next few days. Atavistic has done a really nice job on the sound and with the notes.

Masterpieces by Ellington (including the Liberian Suite) is also scheduled.

Happy holidays to all. And if you misbehave in any way, stay safe at all costs!

Steven Bernstein & The Sam Rivers Trio
jazzbo replied to rockefeller center's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Wow, I saw Sam a few months ago with a local trio behind him and that brought back GREAT memories! Thanks for posting those. -
Okay, sort of a "do you roll your own" question: Do y'all GRIND your own at home, or buy them ground? I've got a little grinder and grind a few days supply at a time.

He disagreed with the banning of Greg, didn't feel it was "fair" that Greg was banned and not anyone else. . . that's how it seemed to me.
-
I think I have both of the early ones, and they are GOOD. Maybe better than GOOD. Going to have to look into this new one!
-
yeah, I agree, I think he's better.

I'm sure that Wingy will transcribe a long story or three from DEEP and will paraphrase it here. . . .

Dova, if you are familiar at all with any of the small group (or even the full blow orchestra) work led by Francy Boland and Kenny Clarke, then I would say that this is a very good example of their style. . . . It's quite a nice release in my opinion; I'm a fan of all the Francy Boland Kenny Clarke Big Band and small group recordings, so my opinion is not exactly unbiased. I don't quite know how to describe this. . . very modern music of the time but very swinging with great soloists doing their thing is probably the clearest I can come up with. This was a session that I believe was not produced by Lion but bought from Gigi Campi (who I believe produced this, and was the producer/manager (?) of this/these bands.)

And even if literally it was a lone bullet, a lone gunman (I'm not saying it is, I haven't personally been convinced, and I'm not the "IT CAN ONLY BE THIS WAY" type of guy anyway), I just don't believe that Oswald acted on his own, without support, without perhaps manipulation. . . . It doesn't ultimately matter I think. The sad thing in my mind's eye is that there were many important men who were silenced during a span of some few years around this time. And it's awful to think it happened (happens) here. But it's reality, human reality, American reality. Disheartening reality.

Hey Matthew, GREAT points, well taken, and thanks for sharing them. I also would add that the tune does a great job of being a tone poem to the city as well. It's a great composition and as you say his composition skills aren't talked up as much as they should be. He wrote very unique pieces! Bud Powell. An amazing man!

Book or no book, I don't believe that Oswald acted alone. Honest to gosh, knowing what I know about Texas politicians and politicians coming out of Texas, I don't laugh at the thought of LBJ having had a hand. I have no answers, but don't believe the lone gunman answer either.
