Yesterday before shutting down the system I spun two Lateef LPs as I had realized that I had been neglecting his work this year.
"The Centaur and the Phoenix" Riverside. This one is mostly a great Ellington burger with some Mingus special sauce spread over some of it. Fascinating record I can listen to over and over.
"Into Something" New Jazz
This one is just a great quartet date with three great supporting artists. Barry Harris is excellent here on the tracks he participates. Wonderful solos, great control of the tempo and mood. Elvin is of course. . . propulsive and commanding attention. And Herman Wright is just so perfect for this group in tone and swing.
I believe that photo was taken about four or five years before he died, at the time this album was recorded and released. The cause of his death is not quite clear--he went to the hospital with stomach pain and passed from pneumonia according to his death certificate.
Antonio Carlos Jobim "Stone Flower" CTI/Sony Blu-Spec cd
I made some system changes and this is the disc I usually use to see "what condition my condition is in."
I dug out the J.J. Johnson Columbia small group Mosaic for the first time in a long time and enjoying disc 6. I think I'll spin more tomorrow. Great music, and enjoying Jaspar and Jordan with J. J.
Sun Ra "Egypt 1971" 4 cd set on Strut, disc 1
This time through this set I'm going to skip the non-musical portions. Don't judge me. I've heard more than enough of Ra's talks.
