Duke Ellington "Volume 4, 1928" Masters of Jazz Media 7 cd Fantastic music from before the Big Crash.

For me it was almost all the electric albums before retirement, then the quintet with Wayne, Ron, Herbie and Tony, and THEN the Prestige material. But I love it all.

COLD. It’s going to be one of those winters (as I keep finding myself thinking and repeating to myself). Starting a day listeninig as Lucinda takes her first nap. . . a disc I haven’t heard long enough for it to be a joy to me after decades of listening to it. And in my favorite edition: a JVC XRCD in lp facsimile. There’s just a deeper soundstage to this mastering, and little details that reveal texture. . . I love the sound of this disc. Steamin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet LP facsimile XRCD

Bob Dylan “New Morning” Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD Daaaaamn this sounds great. -
I watched the Fantastic Four "First Steps" on Blu-ray. I liked it a lot, took me back to being a pre-tween again in my brain.

“Michel Camilo Trio Live at the Blue Note” Chesky 2 cd set, disc 1

“Pee Wee’s Song–The Music of Pee Wee Russell” Arbor cd. This is one of my favorite discs. Nominally led I think by Bobby Gordon who captures the essence of Pee Wee on his clarinet, it also features two other favorite musicians of mine, Marty Grosz on guitar and Dan Barrett on trombone. And the music has that wonderful Pee Wee quirkiness so well rejuvenated in killer sound.

Back further in time. . . Bix Beiderbecke “Jazz Tribune” RCA 2 cd disc 1

Cold, snowy morning. Had a nice leisurely breakfast with one of my sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws . . . well the food was not great but the company was. . . and now after a few episodes of Project Runway All Stars wtih my wife I’m in front of the system for the first time of the day. Starting off with Marcus Printup “Unveiled” Blue Note cd

Bill Carlsen “Devine’s Wisconsin Roof Orchestra 1926-1928, Bill Carlsen And His Orchestra 1929-1931” Jazz Oracle Hot dance stuff. I think I own every Jazz Oracle release and should continue listening to them again. 580×580 113 KB

A warm day–55 degrees right now! I was outside doing a few chores, and Lucinda had a PT appointment we went to. Finally I get to sit down in front of the system for a bit. I dug this 2 cd set out this week to listen to, it’s been a while. A killer band. . . I sort of think the two synth players are a bit unnecessary, but if Stan wanted them why not. Supposedly the last recorded concert for Stan. Stan Getz “The Final Concert Recording” Eagle cd disc 1

I have the V-Disc box set and the Transcription five volumes so I'm covered (which as an Ellington nut makes me feel good).

Eddie Condon “Town Hall Concerts Vol. 2” Jazzology 2 cd set disc 2

David Bowie “The Next Day” from the “I Can’t Give Everything Away” box set. Somehow listening to Bowie makes me feel like a teenager again, even though this one was originally bought right before I moved from Texas to Ohio, and also brings back the stress and emotional shift of that transition. Bowie was an amazing artist. 869×1024 98.7 KB

Duke Ellington “Vol 6 1929” Masters of Jazz Media 7 cd. This one sounds best to me with Phase reversed on my DAC. I feel an early Ellington jag coming on. It happens. This music is so full of joy and wit and bravado and grace. . . wonderful stuff.

Jimmy McGriff “Electric Funk” Blue Note Japan cd Jimmy McGriff – electronic organ Blue Mitchell – trumpet Stanley Turrentine – tenor saxophone Horace Ott – electric piano, arranger Unknown – guitar Chuck Rainey – electric bass Bernard Purdie – drums From 1969. “Groovy” is the word that comes to mind for me when this one plays. I wish I knew who the guitarist was.

Stan Getz with the Kenny Clarke Francy Boland Big Band “Change of Scenes” Verve “Elite” cd It’s been too long since I played this. A great soloist in front of an amazing band full of great musicians. Love it!

I am sitting here comfortably in a way I haven’t since Wednesday or so. . .with a new furnace heating the house, all the house. The expense is going to be crippling in some ways in the year ahead, but the comfort and sense of security against the weather seems worth it right now. The former furnace lasted 27 years. . . I hope I get more than half of those years out of this one. Starting off a listening with disc 2 of this new release, Thelonious Monk “Bremen 1965” – a truly nice 2 cd release from Sunnyside. 185×185 10.4 KB
