  1. He was two days older than my Dad! I loved his playing and arranging with Maynard on Roulette and those wonderful Atlantic albums; "Sister Salvation" on Atlantic was one of my three first jazz albums.
  2. They open fine for me. . . .
  3. Listening through this set, which I have let sit and get dusty too long. I blow hot and cold on OP, and even within recordings I like some aspects of the performance and dislike others, but over the years I have come to really admire his astonishing skill and his sense of drive and swing, related to rock solid “timing.” These live recordings are very interesting–it really surprises me how much of the piano sound itself is reproduced with his intricate pedal usage and his unique keyboard touch. And Thigpen is right with OP in ways that as a drummer I know takes experience and big ears, and Ray Brown is the relaxed and flexible weather vane that shows which way the musical winds are blowing. I wish he were just a tad louder in the mix. These would have been great sets to have a seat for. Oscar Peterson “The London House Sessions”
  4. I would not at all be surprised if he knew of Nichols. I hear lots of Tatum here with his incredible right hand flourishes though very much his own sense of sonance.
  5. Hasaan Ibn Ali "Retrospect In Retirement Of Delay: The Solo Recordings" disc 1 of 2 cd set. Wow.
  6. Stan Getz & Antonio Carlos Jobim "Their Greatest Hits" Verve (Europe) cd
  7. My copy Is out for delivery. Should be good.
  8. Archie Shepp "Kwanza" Impulse Japan SHM-CD UCCI-9378 I haven't met an Archie Shepp Impulse recording I didn't like.
  9. Jay Leonhardt/Gary Burton "Play the Music of Duke Elllington" I missed this one when it came out and I'm making up for it now. Quite a nice session in good sound. Nice to have this instrumentation and a little bit of interpretive novelty to these excellent "tunes."
  10. Fernanda Cunha, "Jobim 90" A nice laid back Bossa jazz session with some very nice guitar playing and Ms Cunha is a very accomplished singer and interpreter of Jobim.
  11. Miles Davis "Miles Smiles" Sony SRCS 9114 lp facsimile cd
  12. Willard White "The Paul Robeson Legacy" Linn Records SACD Bass – Geoff Gascoyne Drums – Mark Doffman Guitar – Richard Bolton Piano, Keyboards, Percussion – Neal Thornton Trumpet – Guy Barker Voice – Willard White Recorded at Angel Studios (Islington, London) and 4749 Studios (Chiswick, London) July 2001.
  13. Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" Columbia 2 LP set, sides 3 and 4. I've had this LP set since '73 I think. Music that I almost don't have to spin to "hear," but enjoy hearing it every time. Followed by Bob Dylan "Springtime in New York" 5 cd set, disc 5
  14. Miles Davis "E.S.P." Mobile Fidelity SACD
  15. We'll live.
  16. Joyce "Agua e Luz"
  17. I was too young to see Coltrane live, alas. I'd heard of him, having lived in Philly from '53 to '66 though ages 2 to 11. Bertrand, what do you feel is "missing" as far as tapes from '67?
  18. Truly a joyous and entertaining release that I have always enjoyed. Two masterful singers having fun together in San Francisco. "The Carmen McRae/Betty Carter Duets" OJC cd.
  19. Today is the first day I really get to sit down and listen to my main system via speakers in five weeks, and also the first time I get to listen to my new transport via the speakers. Great sounds and a general relaxing are occurring. I started off with Yana Purim, "Harvest Time." I love her older sister Flora Purim and there is definitely a family resemblance in the sound of her voice and phrasing. But. . . her English singing is not that great. Her Portuguese is better. . . but Flora is rightfully the one who became an international "name." So I needed to listen to Flora Purim after this and decided to spin the LP of "Stories to Tell". . . ah, an old favorite since it was first released lo these many years ago. Then as the Rega was spinning I listened to record 1 of Miles Davis "Big Fun" 2 LP set. Music that is in my mental musical DNA. And sounding very very good today. Then I thought I would retry a recent release that I think has great music but not so great sound, Joe Chambers "Samba de Maracatu" The sound is a bit better with my new transport and settings but. . . And right now I am spinning disc 7 of Lee Morgan "Complete Live at the Lighthouse" cd set. One of my favorite releases of the year.
  20. I'm pretty sure that items in this series are a straight reissue of the previous cd release, no new mastering.
  21. This new reissue of Barney Wilen's "French. Ballads" sounds fantastic. I have the cd, it's also available on LP.
