  1. That's a great set! I bought a copy for my father as well as he read a review and was interested in it, especially as it had Fats Waller sides that had not appeared before--about 35 years ago I introduced him to some Waller music and he became a big fan.
  2. I hope you enjoy the sound. I feel fairly confident you will. I am equally confident you'll enjoy all the music--I particularly like hearing full sets on consecutive nights like this. . . I feel as if i'm a part of a historic run.
  3. The presentation of the new mix is different--more modern, as if one were closer to the stage and with a less hard right and left orientation--than the earlier versions, but dynamics are improved imo. One could say the soundstage was slightly compressed but the numbers and my ears don't show the music sound is. Anyway, I always take Hoffman reviews with a salt shaker handy. So much depends on an individual's system and perception system. I generally take a chance after reading about a release in several places or just take an intuitive leap. I'm glad I went for this one, better sound for me than the 3 cd set or the single disc I have. And lots of great music.
  4. I don't sense a lack of dynamics or compression artefacts in either the US or Japanese versions of the set in my system.
  5. I love the way that bass clarinet sounds! As far as the bass goes it seemed the same to me on the US or Japanese sets. Right now, another Mingus material disc: Normand Guilebault Ensemble "Hommage a Mingus"
  6. Am Three and then Me "Mingus Sound of Love" Leo cd Wanted some Mingus interpretations new to me and received a few discs in the mail from squid.co yesterday.
  7. Continuing with my second time through this box set, first time with the Japanese edition. I'm going backwards this time. . . . Disc 3 of the UHQCD version from Japan of Lee Morgan "Complete Live at the Lighthouse." I hear several complain of compression on this new mix. . . I certainly hear dynamic contrast and it's certainly not overly loud in my system. Nor do I hear heavy bass as some have reported.
  8. Here's one released in '79 that is very good imo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duet_(Gary_Burton_%26_Chick_Corea_album) Here's another imo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Lights_Are_Low_(Kenny_Burrell_album) And also released in '79: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Soothsayer
  9. Jofnny Griffin "Dance of Passion" Antilles cd
  10. Henry Franklin "The Skipper at Home" Black Jazz/Real Gone Music cd This disc screams "Seventies" in a nice controlled voice. They got the mastering right on this series of reissues.
  11. Kenny Burrell "A Generation Ago Today" Universal Japan SHM-CD 2021 Bass – Ron Carter Drums – Grady Tate Guitar – Kenny Burrell Piano – Richard Wyands Producer – Creed Taylor Saxophone – Phil Woods Vibraphone – Mike Mainieri Recorded December 15 & 20, 1966, January 31 and March 28, 1967. A very nice date with piano or vibes only on two tracks, the rest just Woods, Burrell, Carter and Tate. Swing indeed. Nice remastering on this most recent reissue from Japan!
  12. Disc 4 of the UHQCD version from Japan of Lee Morgan "Complete Live at the Lighthouse." It's nice to have a full run of a club appearance this way--I enjoy this in the way that I enjoy full runs of Grateful Dead shows in a box set. A way to deeply absorb the music.
  13. I would too. It could be paired with the other Washington session in a 2 cd "Rejected Reissue" series premier release.
  14. Been too long since I listened to some dark starlight shining. Love the sound of that Strat in Jerry's hands in this concert. Grateful Dead "Sunshine Daydream" Set 3 cd.
  15. Griff continued to make great albums right up to the end. This one is just great. . . sounds great too. Mostly quartet with Fuller and Nelson appearing on two track each, one together. Johnny Griffin "The Cat" Antilles cd Bass – Dennis Irwin Drums – Kenny Washington Piano – Michael Weiss Tenor Saxophone, Written-By – Johnny Griffin Trombone – Curtis Fuller Vibraphone – Steve Nelson
  16. Disc 5 of the UHQCD version from Japan of Lee Morgan "Complete Live at the Lighthouse." This box set has been really scratching an itch for me and I'm working through it a second time, this time backwards, discs 8 to 1.
  17. The one guitarist I know very well, Willie Oteri (though far more frequently a tenor saxophonist now) is a wonderfully even-keeled individual and a consummate musician who is friendly and warm. . . as long as you are not a numbskull.
  18. Now just one more disc before I take off to my Dad's. . . so I popped in this one which always improves my mood in any version I have. This is my first listen to this new Japanese version. Louis Armstrong "Satchmo Serenades" (expanded) Japan Universal UHQCD
  19. I never tire of "Stella by Starlight" or "All of Me" (and one that should be a standard, Armstrong's song based on "All of Me"--"Someday You'll be Sorry.")
  20. Ah, he's used to me. . . we've been good to great friends for about 25 years!
  21. Lee Morgan "Complete Live at the Lighthouse" Blue Note Japan UHQCD edition, disc 5. which has two compositions of Harold "Tyner" Mabern within it. This music has really been dominating the last week plus. Which is nice. Sent my US copy off to my friend Dave Laczko who will be surprised on Thursday or so when he gets his mail.
  22. Charlie Parker "The Birth of the Bebop--Celebrating Bird at 100--Rediscovered sides from the Dial Recordings" I usually reach for Savoy sides with Bird because those were where I first encountered him and I love the sound of the discs I have but today the Dial called out to me. . . . Great music on both labels!
  23. Apparently it was sold out and more copies were found and added. There are 9 left now.
  24. Going way back. . . Duke Ellington "Vol. 3 1926-1927" Masters of Jazz cd I like this series as the transfers are very good with minimal processing, and things are in chronological order which in Ellington's case usually means a handful of labels each disc. Ellington of any period is interesting to me. I've stayed away from the earliest period for too long. . . I'll make up for that.
  25. This is perhaps my favorite of the series.
