  1. Addey's mastering on this set is very good. He was also it seems given.very good transfers to master as he is not credited with the transfers. I'm looking forward to the Lee Morgan set.
  2. My wife got an impromptu opportunity to have dinner with two of her sisters, so rather than be in the midst of that gabfest I stayed home and am spinning a few discs. Two are ones that arrived in the mail today, both SACDs from Analogue Productions of Blue Note titles: Dexter Gordon, "Dexter Calling" Hank Mobley, "Workout" And in between a disc I finally found that was drifting around elusively in my shelves that I wanted to spin, Buell Neidlinger "Blue Chopsticks: A Portrait of Herbie Nichols"
  3. It probably has been. . . . Right now SACD 1, Symphony 1.
  4. Nah, it's not pretty, pretty, pretty good. . . . I do like the cover a lot. Perfect for the here and now. Nat Birchall "Akhenaten"
  5. Spent the day with my Dad, two medical appointments and a leisurely lunch in between and then a bit in his apartment doing things he saves for me to do. I'm so lucky to still have him with us, he's one of my best friends as well as my loving father. On the way there I listened to Monday Michiru "Moods" and on the way back to Betty Roche "Lightly and Politely" Both are intriguing singers with their own style. Now that I'm home I put on another intriguing singer with her own style, and two talented hands on a piano, Tania Maria, this one "VIa Brasil, Vol.1" with her early trio.
  6. Bobby Hutcherson "Color Schemes" What great tunes! Followed by Oscar Peterson/Milt Jackson "Two of the Few"
  7. Myriam Alter "Cross/Ways" Enja cd Another beautiful cd from Alter, this with an accordion and clarinet front line.
  8. Bobby Hutcherson "Good Bait"
  9. Don Wilkerson "Preach Brother!" Blue Note/Culture Factory LP facsimile cd
  10. It's a great Mosaic.
  11. Peter Lemer Quintet "Local Colour" ESP Disk cd.
  12. I would select a vendor close to you that you suspect or know packs better than average. . . These could easily be damaged by poor packing and shipping. (Though mine came tightly fitted in a tightly sealed cardboard envelope/jet pack via USPS and were undamaged.)
  13. I'll have to go from memory as I am not sure where that box set is at the moment, but I think so yes.
  14. Cool, I don't remember seeing that on the site before. My guess is the 1,000 only decision is Universal/Blue Note's and not Culture Factory's. They have a lot of series going on different labels and formats, and probably want to keep titles rotating in formats and different groups of listeners.
  15. It seems they intend to do more Erwin, I finally found this info on the amazon.fr site which includes a little info about their remastering intention for this series (which differs from the rock releases I have from the label). Thanks to Don Was, we are proud to annonce the beginning of our Blue Note Collection in CD Vinyl Replica. Whats better to have a hard to find album Let Freedom Ring Is An Album By Jackie Mclean, Recorded In 1962. Mclean Wrote Three Of The Four Compositions. The One Non-Mclean Track Is Bud Powells Ballad, Ill Keep Loving You. Deluxe Vinyl Replicas by Culture Factory constitute high quality reissued compact-discs which reproduce all the components of the original LPs and are their exact replicas in compact-disc size (5.3 x 5.3 inches), with authentic single or gatefold cardboard jackets and paper sleeves. In addition to the above, each compact-disc Deluxe Vinyl Replica includes a black finish CD complete with the original label to give it the look and feel of the original record album. Culture Factory strives to achieve an authentic sound with the highest possible fidelity to the original studio masters. Our remastering process brings out the music's true dynamics and original clarity with low levels of noise. In the remastering studio the audio tracks are handled in the form of high-definition, 96Kz / 24-bit digital files for greatest preservation of fidelity. Signal compression is sometimes used to bring out frequencies that were absent or barely heard in the original recordings, and we use the least amount of compression possible. While sound perception varies greatly among individuals our vinyl replica CDs are designed to provide the optimal listening experience when using flat EQ settings. Brand new, original, factory-sealed, limited edition CD release
  16. The packaging is semi-sturdy. It's a bit taller than the JRVG, not a whole lot, and it's stiff card stock as opposed to the thicker cardboard or fiberboard of the JRVGs. The sound is closer to the 75th Anniversary than the UHQCD they re-released most recently, and I dare say it may be a bit better than the SHM-CD--personal preference and system characteristics may mean one is preferred over the other. I like many Culture Factory cds to be honest, but some are turkeys. These two they just released of Blue Notes don't sound like any other Culture Factory cds I have, neither as "pumped up" nor as EQ'd. There's no mastering info on this other than they are 24/96 remastered. I got them from Amazon for less than 9 dollars each. I hope they continue with more titles from the label as I'm digging these two.
  17. Got to warm up the main system and sneak two discs in. First up is this new reissue released Friday on Culture Factory of Jackie McLean "Let Freedom Ring" in a nice LP facsimile package. This actually sounds really good. Walter Davis, Jr. really hits me this listen through, and Herbie Lewis with his interesting lines and crisp attack. Then this new to me disc by Myriam Alter . . . ."Alter Ego" with Ron Miles, Kenny Werner, Billy Drewes, Joey Barron and Marc Johnson. Very nice music, very well recorded.
  18. Thanks for the heads up.
  19. "Joao Gilberto and the Stylists Of Bossa Nova Sing Antonio Carlos Jobim" Cherry Red Records 2 cd set, disc 2
  20. Don Wilkerson "Preach Brother!" Blue Note/Culture Factory LP facsimile cd. Yes, it's Culture Factory. I happen to like a lot of their releases more than others do (though there are turkeys) but this and the McLean title released yesterday actually sound pretty darned good.
  21. I have all the cds in that series. Wonderful series.
  22. Yes, the Mods are updates to the component power supply that he offers, really changes the sound of the amps in great ways. The components that the mods are done to are tube based. Modern tube designs, hand wired, no circuit boards. . . don't sound like classic old school tube amps, to me they have the best of both solid state and tube in their sound. I don't have a camera, I don't have a phone that connects to the web, and I just don't do photos, sorry. Yes, I know. . . and believe it or not I'm in the smallest house I've lived in since my apartment days, a 100 year old cottage that has been expanded both up and out, but still one of the smallest houses in the neighborhood. I have to rent a storage unit to house much of my stuff as my wife doesn't like "stuff" all around. I've lived in two African countries and traveled through Western Europe, so I know how different that can be.
