It's a very well-done set. I'm not a huge Pepper fan but I do really enjoy this set. Here is previous discussion:

Additionally albums playing Nichols' music in general are "Spinning Song" by Duck Baker, "Blue Chopsticks" by Buell Neidlinger, "Marty Krystall plays Herbie Nichols," "Herbie Nichols, Vol. 1" by Eric T. Johnson and "Solo: Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols" by Simon Nabotov (one of my favorites.). And more!

I don't know. . . Wayne is nearly as old as my father. My father is a very accomplished person who has forgotten significant portions of his accomplishments and history. It's quite possible Wayne was given the tapes, destroyed them and forgotten about them. Or not. Either way, I don't suspect we'll ever see an official release, and these tapes have not seemed to surface among collectors.

That's what I think it is.

It will be interesting to see what still exists that they may change their mind about. In a telephone conversation many years ago Michael Cuscuna told me he gave the tape to a rejected session to Horace Silver to destroy, and I think he inferred that was not a lone instance. I got the impression that he may have done that to a Shorter tape as well, as the artist was living and able to decide the it should not come out. But I'm not entirely sure on that latter point as I haven't listened to my interview tape with Michael in a long time.

I think it's the one on this page that Harbour linked to: http://www.serecs.com/coming.html

Miles Davis, "Live/Evil" Sony SACD (stereo/quad--stereo layer) disc 2, again. . . because I love Bartz on this and it was still near the transport. Followed by Freddie Hubbard "Breaking Point" Blue Note/Analogue Productions SACD. Clifford Jarvis gives this a unique feel. . . .

Been all over the map listening today. Started with the bonus disc from the Jerry Garcia "All Good Things" box set from Rhino--that version of "Visions of Johana" is just amazing--once Jerry starts singing and starts rhapsodizing on guitar amazing sounds come out, that guitar was something else. Then on to Bob Dylan "Together through Life" . . . this isn't too popular but I like it, a groovy dance record. Then on to both discs of Miles Davis "Live/Evil," the new stereo/quad SACD from Sony (stereo layer). I love this music so much, have since the 2 LP set was first released. Then on to Flora Purim "Stories to Tell," Milestone LP. Another favorite from the 'seventies on. Just a wonderful album. Finally Tubby Hayes, "Late Spot at Scott's" on Fontana from the Complete Fontana recordings box set.Wow. Energy! And it has never sounded better.

I listened this morning to someone I really admire and don't mention often enough: Tania Maria. I think she's a wonderful vocalist, pianist, and as unique and "distilled" a composer in some ways as Thelonious Monk. First up was "Brasil, Volume 2"--early Tania with her trio, a trio that could be as tight, groove as hard, and be as inventive as many American jazz trios. What distinguishes them is perhaps they tended to brighter tempos. . . and were masterful with them. Tania herself plays and arranges and reminds me of both Keith Jarrett and Ray Charles. And her singing evokes the rhythmic grace and feeling of Jobim and Regina, but also the silky pure tone of and the fleet, musical scatting of Fitzgerald. Then I moved on to "Europe"--a later live recording where Tania has fully embraced and weaponized her quirky funkiness. And the engineering here throws huge instrumental images especially of the Stratocaster and Tania's keyboards--it's like being right in front of a stage.
