A second time through Stellar Space has me more impressed with the souind than the first time through. Some of this music is just near trance-inducing. Definitely a new mastering and expertly done.

I'm most familiar with the first 12 tracks as an LP "Conception," on the strength of that alone I'd say it actually could be seen as a curiosity but it's more. Reminds me in ways, though quite different, to the Bethlehem "Winner's Circle" release.

You know Steve, I hope so too. I don't collect the new music you esponse as much because when i do listen to it I don't feel that interested in it, not the way I do in the music I have been listening to for years AND other newer music. That's just how it is. I guess I don't want to take in the next step in the journey. It's come a long way from the OJDB and Kid Ory and many other early recorded bands.

Me too. Duke and Monk, two pinnacles for me. I ordered those three earlier this morning, I too needed to see. And I ordered "Conception."

I like the sound of that box set myself, was just listening to the Davis session disc last week. It's not spectacular, but it's not harsh and it's not too compressed or thick either. K2 remastered. It can also be had quite cheaply.

I bet the truly unedited tapes didn't get to Japan but I may be wrong. Larry, yeah obessive. . . I just get that way though about core, pivotal things in my collection that see a lot of play. And in a large part that's Miles, Mingus, Monk, Coltrane and Duke. Those guys are always in the mix, always in a stack of cds just played and to be played. Plus. . . I can hear these mastering differences, and want the best. Wish I couldn't more often than not.

I wish I hadn't discovered the sonic benefits of Blu-Spec 2. Erwin is right: if you want them order them now. I just saw that the Monk catalog is getting Blu-Spec 2 treatment. Going to try hard to resist ordering those.

I got in a copy of Stellar Regions SHM-CD. Very interesting sound. Very detailed and a bit more dynamic than the GRP cd. Seems a bit louder as well. In comparison, there are aspects of the GRP cd that I do really like, it's a bit richer in sound being a bit less detailed and a bit darker. The ideal digital version for me would have characteristics of both. Which is how I imagine a nice vinyl mastering would sound. Hmmm.

I have about four copies of Agharta and Pangaea, including vinyl, and there's not a bad one. Epic concert, indeed. When they do finally get around to reissuing this (and issuing the sister show(s)) WOW! I have to say though, the Blu-Spec 2 sounds really good, smooth and yet not toned down, very analog like and highly crankable. My only other experience with Blu-Spec 2 is the first three Sade releases and they too are very impressive.

Yes, that and Pangaea, both the Blu-spec and the Blu-spec 2 have the 2006 mastering. Sounds great! I had Agharta Blu-spec 2 blaring earlier today.

Interesting because those I have don't seem overly bright at all. Systems and ears are diffferent. It's a great thing when there are many differrent editions out there.

I'm not sure which Atlantic reissue program you refer to. I have around 10 Japanese Atlantics 60th Anniversary issues - WPCR 2xxxxx, they all sound excellent. I wasn't aware that these issues were thought to suffer from loudness/compression etc. I'm with you and Laton. I love this series, have grabbed all the Mingus and John Lewis and some others (I'm especially grateful that they reissued the two first jazz lps I ever bought, Leo Wright's "Blues Shout" and Thomas Bell and the Contemporary Jazz Quartet's "Another Dimension"--and both sound great). I don't find them too loud or compressed, but I guess I'm blessed with a system that makes the most of recent reissues and I can pretty much buy with confidence that I'm not going to be too disappointed. One reviewer of my Transport/DAC has said that it plays back modern remasterings well and I have to agree, it's very flexible in having six filters and numerous up-sampling or Non-oversampling modes, plus my amp and preamp are very flexible with tube bias and input and output gain adjustment. I've played a few of these Atlantics on an older Harmon Kardon cd player (the first One-bit player produced commercially, quite a nice player) and a Sony ES SACD player modded with a tube output stage, and they don't sound as good as they do on the new front end. So I do realize that for some systems, and perhaps for headphone users, these can be problematic, but I've enjoyed every one that I have popped into a tray, my favorite Redbook versions of Atlantic titles. Earlier this morning I was playing the new cd of the mono version of "Giant Steps" and really enjoyed it. I haven't bought any of the Coleman reissues in this series. . . but knowing me it's just a matter of time.

Water Records reissued "To Whom. . ." and it sounds really good. And Org Music reissued "The Shape of Jazz to Come" on hybrid SACD and it sounds wonderful.

Can you - or anybody - confirm this by experience/ownership? This one I can find with no (apparent) uncertainty, but I do want to make sure that the Losin site is getting it right, that this issue does in fact have the extra music at the end. sambrasa, thanks for providing that information.
