  2. Interesting interview with the mastering engineer of this series, Paul Blakemoore, working out of Concord Music Group mastering studios here in Cleveland. http://www.uaudio.com/blog/artist-interview-paul-blakemore/ Here's a portion: How does mastering jazz differ from other genres, such as rock, pop, and classical? They’re all very different styles. Jazz, for example, is sort of in between classical and rock. It needs some kind of dynamic range control, but not really aggressive, whereas rock wants much more aggressive dynamic range control to simulate the live, loud-band listening experience. In classical, there’s little (if any) dynamic range control, because one of the key aspects of expression in classical music is the dynamic contrast. The differences between the soft passages and the loud passages play a very important musical function, so you want to maintain those in classical mastering. You also want to optimize the music for whatever the delivery format is. In jazz you do some dynamic range restriction, but it’s a wider dynamic range than rock. Rock generally has a much more constricted dynamic range. So you generally aim to keep most jazz fairly open, with its natural dynamics? Exactly. It also depends on the style of jazz. There are certain kinds of jazz fusion that I do a lot of, because there are a couple of different labels in the label group that do a lot of this sort of contemporary jazz that’s kind of a fusion of pop and rock with jazz. Stylistically, those generally want a greater amount of dynamic range control and a louder overall presentation than a straight-ahead jazz album. But it also depends on the artist, and on the instrumentation. Some of the artists want a more aggressive dynamic range control than others. Some of them want things to really be fairly wide open dynamically. Every project has its own set of puzzles.
  3. That's the one I ordered (it was in stock when I did order it) and the cd that arrived was the mono version. That item was pointed out to me elsewhere, correctly, as the mono version.
  4. Have an awesome day!
  5. Here's where I ordered mine. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-27101 http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-27201
  6. I know this is off topic here, but since you mention it ... I wonder why anyone really needs those RVGs of Prestige material (or the Keepnews Editions or OJC Remasters) when the old Fantasy discs in almost every case seem to sound good? (I know, some OJC Remasters and Keepnews Edition discs contained bonus material or were hard to come by or not on CD before, so I went for them ... but in general, I don't quite see the point all that much there. Care to offer your opinion on this? Lon, too? Well, with my system I can hear clear differences between the RVG and the earlier OJC and these new Prestige releases. I really do like the Prestige RVGs, they sound really good to me, very beefy and though others seem to slight their dynamics my system is very dynamic and they have dynamics to me. These sound sort of the way live music sounds to me when you're right up there either in front of or in the band. That's their appeal for me. These new masterings have a lot more inner detail, more as if you were sitting back in the control booth drinking it in or out in the middle or back of a club and absorbing it, more so at least in comparison to the RVG's more concentrated sound envelope. I like both those experiences! If I have an RVG of a title I've given away the regular OJC, there's nothing wrong with those, but like the BN Works from TOCJ, they just are sort of bland and uninvolving in comparison for me. Each of our rooms and systems, and whether we are listening to 'phones or speakers in a room, I think lead us to like one or another of these different approaches to the reissues more. . . . I like the RVGs and I also like what I have heard of these new Prestige 7000 releases.
  7. It used to be. It will be again. Right now there's not that much to talk about. I'm waiting, eagerly.
  8. I'm not as fond of those 'eighties ones as you are, or was not as fond. I looked and I do have a few still, but gave most of them away. In general I like the Heavyweight Champion set on vinyl the most, that's what I'm listening to most often these days. I do have a few earlier vinyl releases I've had for some time but they aren't in such great shape.
  9. I've read in a number of places that these are dedicated mono mixes. Giant Steps is less "loud" than My Favorite Things, but the latter is not unlistenable. I really like the mono mix of both. It sounds to me as if the master tapes are in pretty good shape. The multi-track masters of Atlantic may be gone in the fire, but the stere and mono masters apparently are still intact.
  10. Ignorant question, apologies: which ones would those be? And was the Heavyweight box all in stereo? Yes, I don't think there's any mono in the box set, unless some of the alternates are (haven't listened to those in ages). There are mono "My Favorite Things" and "Giant Steps" from Japan in this series.
  11. Yes, first time on cd! (Pretty darned sure). What a cover!
  12. I know he's been haunting the blog and the facebook page (me I avoid facebook, just not my thing). . . it's just that evening before he had told me he was hungry for news, and it looked as if he hadn't seen this news so I sent it his way. Maybe one day we can get to the "house" Ricky. Right now I'm not even able to take a sick day or a weekend off taking care of my parents, and it looks as if this situation will continue for some time, and I guess I want it to because the alternative isn't better. Keep on keepin' on with the set! We're eager!
  13. Interesting. Can't really say I hear treble boost in most of those i have. The Blakey-Monk and Mingus clearly show a treble boost on my system, especially when compared to the Passions of a Man box set and the following release of the Blakey album. I think you mentioned somewhere you can easily adjust the highs on your system so it is possible for you to enjoy most modern remasters? I did not plan on ever discussing these Warner Japan Atlantic discs again, so this is likely the last time I will reply to this thread. Sorry, I didn't see this post before. You're absolutely right, there could well be a treble boost on these that I don't notice as I have the treble dialed back considerably on my system as a default for CD, and if it's REALLY bad I'll notice it, so I guess that was an inaccurate statement on my part. I guess with the adjustments I've made these don't present an uncomfortable level of treble for me, and are an improvement over the earlier US versions I have in my opinion. I thank my lucky stars every day for the treble cut circuit on my amp placed right before the speakers, adjustibly shunting high frequency to ground outside the signal path. I avoid many of the problems that tone controls present and still can tailor the top end, which I am very sensitive to. I also can scal back the ribbon tweeters on my speakers and do. It makes cd buying easier for me. I've picked up a few of the Coltranes in this series and am enjoying them, especially the two mono discs.
  14. Thanks Ricky! I'm emailing a copy of your post today to my friend Dave Laczko who as you know is a rabid Pops fan (me too) and has been just itching to hit a preorder button for this set! (Me too).
  15. I thought about my Dad reading Paul's posts. He's written and published five biographies, and they haven't been best-sellers though they are solid scholarly works and have had an impact on the knowledge base around their subjects. Once or twice a year he'll get a royalty check from the publisher of two of these that are still in print and selling a trickle here and there. These checks are like 17 dollars. But they sure bring a smile to his face, not for the dollars per se, but because the work is still being used and out there, that makes him happy. I'm sure some of the artists and/or their family receiving checks feel that same bit of joy when they get a check.
  16. I laughed. . . and then realized you may be right!
  17. Yes. In the Complete Quartet box set, and in the Complete Impulse Album Vol. 5.
  18. Got in two orders from cdjapan today (YAY!) and one had my first batch of the Prestige 7000 series releases. Spun this one immediately. Wow. I have to say this sounds excellent. I honestly would be even more excited about the new Blue Note reissues if they were engineered like this. I have four more titles to listen to and I expect them to be very good listening.
  19. I like her work a lot and have never heard this one, it's part of my big preorder.
  20. Transition, 2012 cd version, crazy price at least today. http://www.amazon.com/Transition-John-Coltrane/dp/B005VR9602/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393009303&sr=8-1&keywords=602527790183
  21. Judge Dee and the case of the giant carrots? It's a mandrake!
  22. Glad we could help.
  23. Yes, that happens to me. Aggravated by the Westlake post office, which is the worst I ever remember being associated with. And especially galling as I have so little time to listen and get overwhelming chunks. I could stop. Yeah right. Bev, downloading is not at all the same for me. Just totally unappetizing.
