Thanks for the reminder. I preordered this set from Hip-O and then when it came I spun it a few times but it came at a BAD TIME. . . so I'll have to revisit this.

Matthew, at one point in 2006 I had an external drive full of Dead files (up through 1971 mostly) and then burned them all onto cdr in maxislim cases (was a lot of fun to find or make artwork) and then stopped downloading for most of 2007 so I haven't needed the drive . . . .I ran out of time to do all that as life got more taxing. I find I like listening to them via cdr more than anything, the cdrs on my main stereo sound great! Some of the auds are fascinating to listen to, sounds as if you are in the middle of the crowd.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. Haven't heard Three from the Vault yet, but by 1973-74, it feels like Billy's trying to fill in all of the places that Mickey might have played. I went back and listened the soundtrack from the Grateful Dead movie the other day, and Billy was almost unlistenable in spots. Glad to be seeing good reviews of Three from the Vault though. It's on my wish list, and the tidbits I've heard here and there, I like quite a bit. I would disagree with most of what you said of Kreutzmann being unlistenable in parts, but there are times on disk two, during the monumental He's Gone>Jam>Weirdness>The Other One>The Spanish Jam>Mind Left Body Jam>The Other One section that it's obvious that Garcia & Kreutzmann are not on the same page, in fact, not even in the same library. Even give those moments, I still like Kreutzmann solo, seems to give the Dead a little more breathing space. I'll have to listen to The Movie Sound Track again a pay more attention to what the drumming is like. I always prefer Bill alone with the band. Not that much a fan of the two drum band. I enjoy Mickey alone with the guys too (Mickey and the Hartbeats for example).

Exactly, by this "period" I really meant this specific one after the Live/Evil band. The "jazz fusion trumpet" previously was pretty damned awesome, I'll take it over any of the other practicioners. And the playing on "It's About that Time" (studio) and "Go Ahead John" (multitracked) are about my favorite Miles playing. . . PERIOD.

Well, doesn't really seem that way to me! Certianly it isn't done in a vacuum and no one can completely block out their earlier life or experience or work. Some of the blues playing strikes me as from before sure, but most of that that strikes me that way is earlier than the period of this box. . . .

The thing that is fascinating to me in this era of Miles is somewhat along the lines of what Jim is talking about: Miles' trumpet is so bold and new and different. . . he is finally really involved in "new directions in music" entirely. So many others at the same time and later were playing "jazz trumpet" fused with these new forms. . . Miles was playing something new . . . and if he did dip back into a bag that had the dust of ages on it. . . he dropped his hand into the prmal blues bag.

As far as I know Jerry Newman recorded one track with Charlie Parker, it's on one of the Media 7 "Masters of Jazz" cds in the Parker series. He apparently wasn't a Parker fan.

I hope that one comes out. Got the new one Friday and listened to most of it so far. It's pretty good. I HATE Brent's electric piano sound. I have an instrument with that sound and I cringe everytime it's switched on. Ruins some songs for me at least right now. . . . Eventually I'll get over it. . . . .
