Talking of Mingus, if you only ever made one Mingus purchase in your life you couldn't do much better than this bad boy; I was listening to disc 4 the other evening, "Mingus at Antibes", what a great performance. Great the way 3 horns and no piano sound kinda like a mini-Big Band. Some of the most soulful, maybe even groovy, playing by Dolphy as well.

This is an excellent set, and also one of the most consistent. US3 i.e. THAT rhythm section were brilliant. I like the stuff with the Turrentine Bros a lot more than I expected as well. It usually makes me reach for "Up at Minton's" Vols 1 and 2 as well, which everyone should own.

As much as I love my Mosaics, there are so many other classic Jazz box sets out there that don't get enough of a mention, so here goes... Art Pepper: The Hollywood All-Star Sessions. I had the single CD sampler of this stuff and liked it, but it didn't really prepare me for how good this set is. Despite what you may think of him or even this period of his career, there is some amazing Jazz here.

Not only is the Booklet on "Black Talk" messed up, it's also messed up in the exact same manner on "Tenor Madness", some stuff printed twice and the last bit missing. I DID write to Concord pointing this out and looking for replacement booklets as I purchased both, I even included the receipt, and have heard nothing back after over a month.

Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!
Cliff Englewood replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Glad I bought both Sets, but very much , because I have yet to take the shrink wrap off the damn CDs, never mind listen to any of them. -
"And a lot of tapes were destroyed in the Atlantic warehouse fire; I don't know which ones of the above list (if any), though." That's what I thought and was kinda implying, how can any Atlantic stuff ever really be re-mastered? I think it's good that I can now get a copy of "Hear Ye Hear Ye" for example, but I doubt it'll sound anything other than ok.
-
"Gambit Records" now have both of these Concerts on CD, they're fast, you have to give them that much.
-
Thanks for that etherbored, it's just that I would be a bit suspicious about claims of re-mastering classic Atlantic stuff, I mean, has anyone actually heard any improvement in sound quality on previous reissues and how would they get their hands on the original tapes?
-
Are all those Atlantic's listed really 24 Bit remastered? If so by who, and where or maybe even how? I'd be interested in the following; WPCR 25151(New)24 bit Tristano,Lennie(p)/Tristano* 2310 WPCR 25152(New)24 bit Konitz,Lee(as)/Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh* 2310 WPCR 25155(New)24 bit Charles,Teddy(vib)/Teddy Charles Tentet* 2310 WPCR 25159(New)24 bit Mitchell,Red(b) & Harold Land(ts)/Hear Ye Hear Ye* 2310 Any more info would be appreciated.

Allen, I sent you a PM yesterday, did you get it? -
Thanks Pete B/JohnS, was it ever released on CD? How does the recording quality compare to "Live at Dana Point", if of course you have "Live at Dana Point" that is.
-
Ron S mentioned/recommended this one in the Concord Sale thread and oddly enough I had recently purchased this but hadn't listened to it. I put it on yesterday and was totally blown away by both the playing and the compositions, so I thought it should have a thread of it's own. I don't what it was about the session but Hawes is just so on his game, it's also some of the best Art Taylor I've heard as well. I never really get too excited about piano trios for some reason but this one is something else. Highlights for me would be "Sonora", "Black Forest", "Children's Play" and "Spanish Steps" but the entire album is really excellent, and the sound is brilliant too, my edition says "24bit remastered" and although I have no idea if that's true or not it really does sound amazing. As I said, very rarely do I enjoy piano trios as much as this one. Sprint, don't run, to the cash register if you ever see this one. Here's the track list from Ron's link: 1. Blues Enough 2. Sonora 4:56 3. They Say It's Wonderful 3:23 ** 4. Black Forest (Take 3) 6:07 5. Children's Play 9:17 ** 6. Blues For Bud 6:58 ** 7. Spanish Steps (Take 2) 3:17 8. Dangerous 4:29 9. My Romance 9:02 10. Spanish Steps (Take 1) 2:39 * 11. Black Forrest (Take 1) 5:43 * HAMPTON HAWES (Piano) JIMMY WOODE (Bass) ARTHUR TAYLOR (Drums)

I saw this listed on the Marsh site, does anyone have this or know anything about it. Picked this up yesterday for €20, just had a quick look through it so far. Personally I would give it a B+. The picture quality is slightly better on the first show, but the sound is very good on both shows IMHO, and according to the DVD cover, stereo. Well worth getting.

Trane - Fearless Leader box
Cliff Englewood replied to Evonce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Managed to get this set via the Board, thanks again to Larry "LJazz" for the great price and super fast delivery, we actually set a Trans-Atlantic record for snail-mail on this transaction. Clem was spot on in his review, the booklet is superb, great liners and amazing photos’, and Patrick Mulligan who was involved in both the Coltrane and Mingus box sets for Rhino is involved here. If I had to compare it to another box set for overall quality and "niceness", I know that’s not a real word, I would compare it to the "Passions of a Man" set. Been getting stuck into it recently and although I had a few of the individual albums already, it's great to hear it in chronological order. I think it contains some of Coltrane's most "romantic" playing of his career. He really was coming into some great form during these years, still curious, still searching, still hungry. Makes me want to spend more time with the Atlantic box as well. Several thumbs up and looking forward to the next two. -
Did anyone get the "Al Cohn/Perkins/Kamuca - The Brothers" Mosaic Single, if so, opinions please.
-
If "Hank Mobley - Messages (Prestige)" comes off hold I would be interested.
