  1. Thanks Claude, I didn't realise that this set was so Konitz-heavy, not that there's anything wrong with that.
  2. Cool king ubu, thanks for that.
  3. Up, as I am looking for the The Complete Recordings of T-Bone Walker 1940-1954 discography and the The Complete Atlantic Recordings of Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh discography. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it, as I really want to see what I'm missing and will more than likely never get.
  4. I'm starting to think this might be too good to be true, certinly when you compare it to the prices of some of these; Gibson Jazz Guitars I mean a 1997 ES-175 is actually more, and that's hardly a classic year. Herb, what kind of problems did you have with your "Floater"?
  5. Listened to all 3 discs of this last night; A truly excellent set, almost perfect, I just can't get into "Nixon, Dixon And Yates Blues" though. It's the only stinker IMHO.
  6. Link: Herb Ellis ES-165 These are the specs: Herb Ellis ES-165 Manufactured in: Memphis, TN BODY Size: 16" wide x 20.5" long x 3.5" thick Top Species: Curly Maple/Poplar/Maple laminate Back Species: Curly Maple/Poplar/Maple laminate Rim Species: Curly Maple/Poplar/Maple laminate Binding: Multi-ply top, single-ply back NECK Species: Mahogany Profile: Standard 175 Peghead Pitch: 17° Thickness at 1st fret: 0.635" Thickness at 12th fret: 0.780" Heel Length: 0.625" Neck Joint Location: 14th fret Headstock Inlay: Holly FINGERBOARD Species: Rosewood Scale length: 243/4" Total Length: 17.321" Nut Width: 111/16" Width at 12th fret: 2.062" Frets: 20 Inlays: Pearloid split Parallelogram Binding: Single-ply HARDWARE Plating Finish: Gold Bridge: ABR Tailpiece: Old Style 175 Knobs: Gold tophat Tuners: Grover keystone ELECTRONICS Neck Pickup: Floating Jazz, Johnny Smith pickup with gold cover Controls: Single volume control on pickguard CASE Exterior: Black Faux Alligator Interior: Deep Green Velour Silkscreen: 'Gibson Memphis' name plate STRINGS Brite Wires .010-.046 I reckon I might be able to get it for around €2200 -> €2000, which is huge I know, but considering that a no frills ES-175 is over a grand more, it's probably a good price. The problem is, like most things there is no variety in the stuff available here, it's either Gibson, Fender or generic, no name, made in China kinda shit. I was thinking this is a way to get close to owning a vintage Gibson without actually buying a vintage Gibson!!! I really like that 50's Jazz Guitar sound, just kinda pure and no frills and I was thinking this one might make it easier to attain.
  7. .....with this thing of beauty; the Herb Ellis ES-165, Wine Red I can get it for a sort of decent price, so does anyone have one, anyone played one, anyone think they should be avoided at all costs, whatever???? I did have a little try on one without plugging it in and it sounded fairly good, but any info/feedback would be appreciated.
  8. I have it, but not in front of me at the moment. I think it has the stuff already mentioned plus another session, that of course has absolutely nothing to do with the Baker/Mulligan Quartet, or should that be the Mulligan/Baker Quartet.
  9. I should have made myself more clear, I actually have the 3 disc Complete Roost Sessions and I too would consider it essential. I was curious to know what's on the Proper Box. From what I can tell it's all the Roost stuff without the alternate takes and some of the stuff from Europe circa ??????????. The first disc seems to have the very early Savoy recordings, if i'm guessing correctly.
  10. After reading through the Stan Getz post in "Recommendations", and seeing how many people listed this little gem; The Complete Roost Recordings I gave Discs 2 and 3 a spin last night. Getz and Raney were just amazing together. I think if this was repackaged as a Mosaic Select: Stan Getz: The Complete Roost Recordings, people here would be raving about it alot more, I mean Malcolm Addey is involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really wish I could find the The West Coast Sessions Box at a cheap price.
  11. Just out of curiosity, how much duplication is there between the the Proper Box, "The Sound" and the Complete Roost Recordings on Blue Note/Capitol?
  12. Miles Davis: The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions, nice to hear all this stuff in the order it was recorded. It's kinda like one big long nice piece of music.
  13. I picked this up last year for €20 and got it mainly because it has some live stuff with Marsh and Konitz. I haven't even listened to the first 2 discs yet, It's a really good way to get a lot of stuff that would otherwise be really hard to find. Obviously the label is a bit dodgy morals wise and I think the sound is pretty much as good as your gonna get, for the majority of these recordings anyway. Make sure you get the "Intuition" CD on Capitol first though.
  14. Some more Zoot recommendations; Morning Fun. Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer Blues for Two. Zoot Sims, Joe Pass Also this one, A Summer Thing. Is this the same as the "Nirvana" recording mentioned earlier, only under a different name? It has Zoot Sims/Bucky Pizzarelli/Milton Hinton/Buddy Rich, Buddy Rich and Zoot "sing" on "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You ", this is the track listing. 1. Summerset 2. Honeysuckle Rose 3. Summer Thing 4. Somebody Loves Me 5. Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You 6. Nirvana 7. (Back Home Again In) Indiana 8. Memories of You 9. Come Rain or Come Shine 10. Lazy River 11. Send in the Clowns Also, and suprised this hasn't been mentioned already, Art 'N' Zoot
  15. Talking of Mingus, if you only ever made one Mingus purchase in your life you couldn't do much better than this bad boy; I was listening to disc 4 the other evening, "Mingus at Antibes", what a great performance. Great the way 3 horns and no piano sound kinda like a mini-Big Band. Some of the most soulful, maybe even groovy, playing by Dolphy as well.
  16. This is an excellent set, and also one of the most consistent. US3 i.e. THAT rhythm section were brilliant. I like the stuff with the Turrentine Bros a lot more than I expected as well. It usually makes me reach for "Up at Minton's" Vols 1 and 2 as well, which everyone should own.
  17. As much as I love my Mosaics, there are so many other classic Jazz box sets out there that don't get enough of a mention, so here goes... Art Pepper: The Hollywood All-Star Sessions. I had the single CD sampler of this stuff and liked it, but it didn't really prepare me for how good this set is. Despite what you may think of him or even this period of his career, there is some amazing Jazz here.
  18. Not only is the Booklet on "Black Talk" messed up, it's also messed up in the exact same manner on "Tenor Madness", some stuff printed twice and the last bit missing. I DID write to Concord pointing this out and looking for replacement booklets as I purchased both, I even included the receipt, and have heard nothing back after over a month.
  19. Glad I bought both Sets, but very much , because I have yet to take the shrink wrap off the damn CDs, never mind listen to any of them.
  20. "And a lot of tapes were destroyed in the Atlantic warehouse fire; I don't know which ones of the above list (if any), though." That's what I thought and was kinda implying, how can any Atlantic stuff ever really be re-mastered? I think it's good that I can now get a copy of "Hear Ye Hear Ye" for example, but I doubt it'll sound anything other than ok.
  21. "Gambit Records" now have both of these Concerts on CD, they're fast, you have to give them that much.
  22. Thanks for that etherbored, it's just that I would be a bit suspicious about claims of re-mastering classic Atlantic stuff, I mean, has anyone actually heard any improvement in sound quality on previous reissues and how would they get their hands on the original tapes?
  23. Are all those Atlantic's listed really 24 Bit remastered? If so by who, and where or maybe even how? I'd be interested in the following; WPCR 25151(New)24 bit Tristano,Lennie(p)/Tristano* 2310 WPCR 25152(New)24 bit Konitz,Lee(as)/Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh* 2310 WPCR 25155(New)24 bit Charles,Teddy(vib)/Teddy Charles Tentet* 2310 WPCR 25159(New)24 bit Mitchell,Red(b) & Harold Land(ts)/Hear Ye Hear Ye* 2310 Any more info would be appreciated.
  24. Allen, I sent you a PM yesterday, did you get it?
  25. Thanks Pete B/JohnS, was it ever released on CD? How does the recording quality compare to "Live at Dana Point", if of course you have "Live at Dana Point" that is.
