The Long Awaited CD Sale List
Cliff Englewood replied to Dan Gould's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Payment winging it's way to you as of today. Cheers. -
I have both of these, and watched them both last night, they're well worth getting even if one of them is a bit short, around 40 mins, I think it's the one with the Antibes footage.

The Long Awaited CD Sale List
Cliff Englewood replied to Dan Gould's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Is there any chance you could hold the following discs please; Tal Farlow, The Swinging Guitar of (Verve) $7 Warne Marsh, Back Home (Criss Cross) $9 Also, does this one have the extra tracks? Red Mitchell-Harold Land Quintet, Here Ye! (Koch) $7 Cheers. -
Checked out the Heritage Guitars Website, they look great, don't know if I'd be able to get them in Ireland though.

It's just I'm starting to think that the ES-165 is just a potential ES-175 that doesn't quite make the quality control/grade required for the ES-175 price. Anyone hear of a ES-335 "Studio", there's one is available second hand, I don't have any real details on it.

Oscar Peterson-what do board members think of him?
Cliff Englewood replied to Tony Pusey's topic in Recommendations
Jesus, that's the last time I dig up a thread looking for an opinion on a Boxset. How did get Hitler get involved. Does anyone have the Albums on the Boxset or even the Boxset itself???? -
Oscar Peterson-what do board members think of him?
Cliff Englewood replied to Tony Pusey's topic in Recommendations
Songbooks Etcetera Looking for opinions/advice on this one. Would this be a good way to get a lot of Oscar in one fell swoop? This is what it contains according to Amazon. Product Description There are at least five Oscar Petersons on display on this comprehensive 10 CD Box Set representing Oscars work with the legendary Norman Granz and celebrating his 80th birthday on August 15th 2005.......the virtuoso soloist, the leader of a rapidly evolving piano trio, the master accompanist, the indefatigable anchor of the Jazz At The Philharmonic rhythm section, and the devoted chronicler of the American popular song. CD's 1-5 of AVID's re-mastered set focuses on Oscar's rather neglected work interpreting the Great American Songbook where he and Granz "tried to draw more people into jazz", including works by Kern, Arlen, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Gershwin amongst many others. CD 6 features Oscars first session with Granz as he accompanies the legendary Billie Holiday across 16 sides that show his talent as an accompanist. CD's 7-8 capture Oscars collaboration with four leading tenor sax men: Lester Young, Ben Webster, Stan Getz getting fired up with Dizzy Gillespie, and a rare session with the unique Flip Phillips. CD's 9-10 features the entire 1954 issue from the Jazz At The Philharmonic, including Oscar playing alongside such names as Lester Young, Bill Harris and Ray Brown. Complete with a fine essay by Dr Richard Palmer AVID's latest release is a testament to a great pianist whose courage, dedication and sheer will shine through in his playing and to a great partnership with his friend, mentor and patron Norman Granz. -
Nice pics there Jim, where did you get them? I've given the axe in question 2 or 3 quick goes and I'm becoming less enamoured with it, just little things like the finish not being quite what it should be, things like the inlays. Also, even though this will sound stupid as I haven't even bought the thing yet, I would be concerned about the re-sale value of such a model. I mean even if Herb died, and I really hope he doesn't, I don't think the re-sale value would shoot up for a guitar with such specific specs. However........ I have also spotted one of these in another shop, the legend that is the ES-175, it's over a grand more but.... What's that song that would be totally appropriate for my current situation, I think it's, "I Fall In Love Too Easily" I think I just have Gibson envy.

I bought the RVG of Sonny Rollins - Plus 4 and did not notice any improvement over the 20bit OJC, if anything, it sounded slightly worse. P.S. Somebody tell Ira Gitler to stop doing Liner Notes, he wasn't that good first time round and hasn't gotten any better with age.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Cliff Englewood replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Funnily enough, I bought mine, also a Universal edition, in Tower before Christmas for €60, so does this mean I am indirectly eternally indebted to you as well??? Even with the dodgy Disc 6, it was still a bargin. -

Eh, Ron??? sorry to go off topic but that ones beyond me, but in fairness, most things are. -
If you don't mind me asking Hardbopjazz, WHY, OH WHY DID YOU SELL A 1940S CHARLIE CHRISTIAN MODEL??????? I would actually kill for one of those.

Looks like I'm going to be sending some money to Mr Hiroshi Tanno.

The Complete Verve Tal Farlow Sessions, discs 3->6, really like disc 5 with Tal, Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke and no drummer, Tal's comping is class. -

Thanks Claude, I didn't realise that this set was so Konitz-heavy, not that there's anything wrong with that. -

Up, as I am looking for the The Complete Recordings of T-Bone Walker 1940-1954 discography and the The Complete Atlantic Recordings of Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh discography. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it, as I really want to see what I'm missing and will more than likely never get. -
I'm starting to think this might be too good to be true, certinly when you compare it to the prices of some of these; Gibson Jazz Guitars I mean a 1997 ES-175 is actually more, and that's hardly a classic year. Herb, what kind of problems did you have with your "Floater"?

Listened to all 3 discs of this last night; A truly excellent set, almost perfect, I just can't get into "Nixon, Dixon And Yates Blues" though. It's the only stinker IMHO. -

The problem is, like most things there is no variety in the stuff available here, it's either Gibson, Fender or generic, no name, made in China kinda shit. I was thinking this is a way to get close to owning a vintage Gibson without actually buying a vintage Gibson!!! I really like that 50's Jazz Guitar sound, just kinda pure and no frills and I was thinking this one might make it easier to attain.
-
.....with this thing of beauty; the Herb Ellis ES-165, Wine Red I can get it for a sort of decent price, so does anyone have one, anyone played one, anyone think they should be avoided at all costs, whatever???? I did have a little try on one without plugging it in and it sounded fairly good, but any info/feedback would be appreciated.

Baker/Mulligan Qt. "Comp. Recordings" (Definitive Records)
Cliff Englewood replied to jeffsjazz's topic in Re-issues
I have it, but not in front of me at the moment. I think it has the stuff already mentioned plus another session, that of course has absolutely nothing to do with the Baker/Mulligan Quartet, or should that be the Mulligan/Baker Quartet. -
I should have made myself more clear, I actually have the 3 disc Complete Roost Sessions and I too would consider it essential. I was curious to know what's on the Proper Box. From what I can tell it's all the Roost stuff without the alternate takes and some of the stuff from Europe circa ??????????. The first disc seems to have the very early Savoy recordings, if i'm guessing correctly.

After reading through the Stan Getz post in "Recommendations", and seeing how many people listed this little gem; The Complete Roost Recordings I gave Discs 2 and 3 a spin last night. Getz and Raney were just amazing together. I think if this was repackaged as a Mosaic Select: Stan Getz: The Complete Roost Recordings, people here would be raving about it alot more, I mean Malcolm Addey is involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really wish I could find the The West Coast Sessions Box at a cheap price.
