  1. From Clifford Allen's interview with Neidlinger: AAJ: So you began studying with Cage and Crumb in the early ‘60s, is that correct? BN: Not exactly studied; I performed world premieres of their compositions, and I had a grant at this place in Buffalo called the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, (or as it became known due to the incessant sexual activity of director Lukas Foss, the Center for the Creative and Performing ‘Acts’). And that’s how I met George Crumb, who was also a fellow in that program; he wrote music for me and that’s how I got involved with him. I’d already played two seasons in the Houston Symphony and I’d achieved my first symphony position. How that happened was that I got busted and lost my cabaret card, and couldn’t play [in New York clubs] anymore, so I moved to Providence, Rhode Island. I lived there for a while and got rid of my heroin habit, and I started playing with the resident rhythm section in a jazz club. The Boston Pops was going on tour, so I auditioned for [Arthur] Fiedler and he hired me for the tour. When we got to Houston, there was a bass opening in the symphony, I auditioned and got it. I always played jazz, even when I was working in symphonies. When I was working in Houston I was with Arnett Cobb, I recorded with Little Esther Phillips, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and I played with James Clay.

    IPod Replacement

I also wonder whether the current iPod Touch has more memory in cache, and so can do a better job of shuffling the playing order of songs.
  3. Wasn’t Neidlinger lead bassist with the Houston Symphony at that point?

I also wonder whether the sound quality on the current iPod Touch is better than the iPod Classic.
  5. I know it doesn't exactly match your requirements, but I have to put in a good word for my Brother HL-L8350CDW. Doesn't have a scanner, photo prints are acceptable, but it's a workhorse, very quiet and dependable. Also, I have to put in a bad word about Epson. I bought one of their all-in-one inkjets. It came with a one-year warranty, and died after 14 months. Epson refused to honor the warranty since it was 2 months out of warranty. I've had some people debate me on this, but I maintain this is not the mark of an honorable company - I never intended to replace my printer every 14 months. I think we all have the expectation that the equipment we buy will work for many years. So think carefully before you buy another Epson.
  6. My guess is they ordered too few for its initial pressing, and were caught short. It's possible they press in Europe for worldwide distribution. Amazon raised its prices because dynamic pricing is hard-coded into their system. I'll be patient; the price should come down soon.

  10. Thanks for the tip. I now know there's one about 5 miles from me in Houston.
  11. I enjoyed the box. I listened to it chronologically, which front-loaded many of the worse sounding recordings. Obviously you'd need to pace yourself and not listen to the entire box at once. I'll probably never listen to most of it again, but was glad to "take the journey." Look at it this way: if you had attended any of these concerts in 1966, you wouldn't have had an expectation of listening to it again. Enjoy it for what it is. Even though each concert repeats the same setlist, I was struck by the variety inherent in the musicianship; it was somewhat like listening to a jazz sextet. Garth Hudson is brilliant.
  12. I got a pretty funny email this morning from Emotiva, clearly presented as an April Fools joke, about their new Emotiva Toaster. It's on their home page: https://emotiva.com
  13. $6.99 for the download from eMusic: https://www.emusic.com/album/2391424/Sun-Ra--His-Arkestra/God-Is-More-Than-Love-Can-Ever-Be
  14. If you’re going soon, you should be able to catch the bluebonnets. Find a nice field. Beautiful!
  15. Here's a page listing their plans: https://www.emusic.com/plans They have 3 albums by him, but none under Gallo; see: https://www.emusic.com/artist/rs_86678/Winston-Mankunku-Ngozi
  16. This one's interesting: 1,140 titles from the South African record company Gallo, although none of their Abdullah Ibrahim titles.
  17. My hope for the 80th anniversary is for BN to issue complete artist box sets, similar to what Sony/Columbia is releasing, but hopefully with the most recent masterings (and at reasonable prices). I know we've seen recent complete Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock BN boxes, but those were with older masterings.
  18. Takin' Care of Business, indeed.
  19. I had The ESP Sampler. It was actually 99 cents. I bought it at King Karol on 10th Ave. & 42nd St. in Manhattan in 1970, when I also bought Trout Mask Replica and An Evening With Wild Man Fischer. Those were the days!
  20. OK, two more:
  21. Do you know about this one?
  22. Bell: The label still puts out a significant number of reissues each year, correct? Was: Yeah. The last couple of years have been less, so we’re going to use the 80th anniversary to set up an extensive reissue campaign that will last for years.
  23. I loved Phil Lesh’s autobiography “Searching For The Sound.”
  24. Welcome, btw.
