    RVG - RIP

    I think that's Sonny.

    RVG - RIP

I know Englewood Cliffs - it's now very ritzy. If Rudy's family is still living there, that's one thing. But if they aren't, it makes much more sense to sell the house. Here's hoping someone good buys the studio and transplants it intact somewhere else.

I wonder what'll happen to his studio...
  4. Sad news. "Here Comes Louis Smith" just burns. RIP.
  5. Apparently, Rudy Van Gelder was a tribe member. According to the NY Times obituary, his mother was Sarah Cohen. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/26/arts/music/rudy-van-gelder-audio-engineer-who-helped-define-sound-of-jazz-on-record-dies-at-91.html?_r=1

    RVG - RIP

OMG. RIP. And thanks for the music.
  7. I find it odd that MM is not specifying which album they're referring to. It's not mentioned in any of the 13 individual album descriptions: https://www.musicmattersjazz.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=116
  8. How sad. What an intriguing musician. Plays on one of the great, quirky albums I remember so fondly: RIP.
  9. Sure was Baron. My favorite Sco drummer might still be Adam Nussbaum.
  10. BTW, anyone who's into Sco knows the level of wordplay in his titles. If you'll read the description of this project in Amazon, you'll see the many layers of meaning here. Funny as all hell.
  11. I did a Google search tonight, and couldn't find a scan of the cover with "Retouched cover to come."
  12. Release date September 23. Sco, Steve Swallow, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart:

    Pat Martino

Just listened to Live at Yoshi's again after a long time away. I love Pat's playing, but Joey's pretty oppressive on the bass pedals - always there, doesn't allow any air between the notes. Would've preferred a bassist on the gig in addition to DeFrancesco. YMMV, of course.
  14. R.I.P.

  16. TOKYO— Takeo Morita wanted absolutely the best fidelity possible from his audio system, so he bought a utility pole. The 82-year-old lawyer already had a $60,000 American-made amplifier, 1960s German loudspeakers that once belonged to a theater, Japanese audio cables threaded with gold and silver, and other pricey equipment. Normal electricity just wouldn’t do anymore. To tap into what Mr. Morita calls “pure” power, he paid $10,000 to plant a 40-foot-tall concrete pole in his front yard. On it perches his own personal transformer—that thing shaped like a cylindrical metal garbage can—which feeds power more directly from the grid. More here: WSJ
  17. How about The Complete John Lewis, Milt Jackson, MJQ Sessions On Warner Bros.-related labels (East-West, Qwest) 1987 - 199? It would include: MJQ - Three Windows MJQ - For Ellington Milt Jackson - Burnin' In The Woodhouse Milt Jackson - Sa Va Bella Milt Jackson Meets The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - Explosive! Milt Jackson - Reverence And Compassion Milt Jackson - The Prophet Speaks MJQ & Friends - A 40th Anniversary Celebration John Lewis - Evolution John Lewis - Evolution II And I may have missed some titles. This could be an interesting, poignant look at greats in the twilight of their careers, and how they bring different qualities to the music.
  18. Happy birthday, guy!
  19. Maybe Dr. Lonnie will bring some grease.
  20. Just learned of this biography, published in March. Amazon
  21. Wow...great piece, ep1str0phy.
  22. But the amazon.ca link at the top of the thread shows a 50-CD box and says "This title will be released on September 23, 2016." Perhaps they got it wrong and it will only be 25 CDs.
  23. This one looks VERY interesting. Release date September 23. Amazon.
  24. So there's a 50-CD box and a 25-CD box?
  25. I like the Insect Trust record very much; even bought the Collectors' Choice CD reissue. It's much better than their first album on Capitol. I actually saw them open for The Mothers and Seatrain at the Fillmore East. Don't remember the drummer that night, but am sure it wasn't Elvin.
