  1. I really don't get the idea that just because someone plays jazz they are entitled to earn a living from it It's a common music and tens of thousands of people can play it. Same for singer/songwriters. There are probably millions who play sing and write but - here's the thing - it isn't streaming (or Andorrans) who are preventing them from making a living. Of course millions of people would love to make a living from their art, poetry, novels, music, etc. It's a market, and - dare I add - not everyone offers a superlative product. If it's that easy, you try to do it.
  2. Yes, much like Art Tatum, Pass needed a group to kick him in the butt and get him rocking. A trio recording I highly recommend is Live At Donte's (Pablo).
  3. Off-topic, but I went this week to the Menil Collection in Houston. They have the largest Magritte collection outside of Belgium. There, I saw the original of the Dreams cover.
  4. Anyone here know this ensemble? I only know their first album, which I've played with pleasure for lo these 40 years or so. A synthesizer band out of Ithaca, NY; largely the work of David Borden. Their approach predates Tangerine Dream. The album I have: Wikipedia Website
  5. I think it contributes to the end of the music industry as we know it. What this thread hasn't addressed is that artists cannot make a decent living from the amounts Spotify and other streaming services pay. Kids who at one time might have gone into music will now go into other fields, such as computer programming. Enjoy the music that's been made, because I'm not sure how much new music there will be in the future.
  6. Monty Python broadcast live in theaters nationwide - Fandango.
  7. 4th Annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up At The Movies - Beat Club 4/21/72 Thursday, July 17 @ 7:30 PM dead.net
  8. I believe the Montreux Summit Dexter tracks are included in the Complete Columbia box.
  9. UA was a weird label in the early-70's. All of their stuff was cut out. I bought Can's Ege Bamyasi Okraschoten for no more than $1.99. Didn't much like it/figure out what the point was/penetrate the language barrier. From an adult perspective, it was my first reference to okra. I guess they really liked okra?

    Bob Dylan corner

    It fetched $2 million. http://forward.com/articles/200689/bob-dylan-like-a-rolling-stone-lyrics-fetch-m-at/
  11. Saw this new release on eMusic today. 5 Hank Williams tunes.
  12. Saw this interesting little thing on eMusic today, not sure where else to post it. It's from Rhino Atlantic; I wonder whether other mono releases will follow.
  13. I'm not sure that Blakey was that great. Powerful, true, but he could rush the beat, and didn't play that sensitively. He was a force of nature, but then so is Baker. I agree that the best of live Cream was amazing music, sui generis.

    Bob Dylan corner

One of the most popular songs of all time, Bob Dylan‘s “Like a Rolling Stone,” could bring between $1 million and $2 million at auction. A working draft of the finished song in Dylan’s own hand is being offered by Sotheby’s on Tuesday. The draft is written in pencil on four sheets of hotel letterhead stationery with revisions, additions, notes and doodles: a hat, a bird, an animal with antlers. The stationery comes from the Roger Smith hotel in Washington, D.C. More here: NY Post
  15. Per Wikipedia, the suggested Mosaic would contain the following: Signifyin' (7/17/63) Possum Head (1/28/64) Cole Slaw (6/19/64) Rough House Blues (12/64) Musty Rusty (6/3/65) Fried Buzzard (8/6 & 7/65) Blowing In The Wind (8/30/66) At His Best (8/30/66) I'd imagine it would fit on 4 CDs. Maybe that's the problem: not large enough for Mosaic.
  16. deepdiscount.com has a one-use, 15% off sale which ends tomorrow. I got the DVD box of the complete Jazz Casual series for $71.
  17. We took a road trip over the weekend to Natchez, Mississippi and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I took these photos in the Louisiana state history museum in Baton Rouge:
  18. There would be a good Mosaic in collecting Lou's Chess/Argo material.
  19. He shouldn't have left Blue Note! I've never even heard of this album; just looked it up on Wikipedia.
  20. Here are three tracks to be going on with! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1lpVguArUQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9ILMmDB0kI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=059cD0TqT7E Listening to them now. Nice arrangements! Sound like a punchier Gil Evans. Too bad they recorded Dexter's horn all wrong (very tinny; it's the same sound that's on Homecoming). Still, very sumptuous music.
  21. Gerry Goffin, a prolific and multi-dimensional lyricist who with his then-wife and songwriting partner Carole King wrote such hits as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," ''(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," ''Up on the Roof" and "The Loco-Motion," died early Thursday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 75. NY Times
  22. I always loved how he accompanied Miles on the BN version of It Never Entered My Mind.
  23. I really like these sessions, included in the Jazz On Vogue box:
  24. I listened to Filthy McNasty today. RIP.
  25. But note that they're still cheaper at amazon.it. Both the Jarrett and the Bird are eur 25,90, which converts to $35.16.
