Oh, yeah, lots of vocals, most of them by "Lionel Hampton, vocal, & His Orchestra". Specifically: Disc one: 14 out of 23 tracks Disc two: 10 out of 17 tracks Disc three: 10 out of 24 tracks Disc four: 6 out of 23 tracks Disc five: 6 out of 20 tracks

They did the same thing on the Self-Portrait set, and I have resisted the deluxe version, even though it is the only major missing piece in my Dylan collection. The Self Portrait set was the first deluxe set I bought, and it was only for the Isle of Wight disc (which is pretty great). I must say that the books and presentation are handsome, but (IMHO) the music and approach didn't live up to the price (I saw no real integration of the Self Portrait and New Morning sessions, or a coherent overview of what was going on with Dylan during that time; Greil Marcus's essay was unimpressive). I will probably buy the 6-CD set, but agree about the too-high price. Hopefully, someplace like amazon.co.uk will have it for less.

It seemed to me like a predominantly vocal set, with many alternate takes. Hampton's vocals are pleasant enough, but be prepared for a lot of them. I'm not sad I bought it, but wish it were somehow...different.

I think if tapes existed, they would have been included in the Miles/Evans box.

I'm always intrigued by something I read in Rolling Stone, not long before he died, that there was a planned collaboration between Buckley, Jackson Browne and Gregg Allman. Was that the same Marc McClure who did this?:

Wonderful news re TBT. As for the other release, Elvis Costello's participation sours it for me; explanation for that would have to go into the Politics section.

FYI, I tried 4 of the audio-only links, but all that came up was "video not found." The audio would not play. Thanks for posting, though.

Are there any others besides the Coltrane and Mingus?

Found this interesting release on eMusic: Giant Steps in mono, from Rhino Atlantic. Hope this is a good trend. $4.54 for members.

I agree with a lot of this. I bought Starsailor the week it came out, and found it cold, off-putting, and pretty disappointing. His first two albums are too pretty, folk-psychedelia, and sound like the work of a young man. His work deepened with Happy Sad, and not just lyrically; the music deepened too, and I love the vibes and Lee Underwood on guitar. I heard Greetings From L.A. as an authentic attempt to play to his strengths (his soulful voice) in a more-commercial R&B setting, and, as a songwriter, to encompass his obvious preoccupations of the time (mostly sado-masochistic sex, apparently). Sefronia and Look At The Fool tone down the sex but keep the mournful R&B. I guess he kept hoping to catch fire, but there wasn't a ready audience for it. With hindsight, he was the type of artist who needed a manager with a firmer hand, who could give realistic feedback and help control the experimentation without alienating his older audience.

What were the 3 tracks? I found 2 tracks (Afternoon In Paris and Tricotism) on a different Burrell Chess two-fer (which I bought as a cut-out cassette):

Per Wikipedia, "In 1971 Chess Records was purchased by General Recorded Tape, aka GRT Corporation, which consolidated both the Chess and Cadet labels into a single labeling number sequence." A list of their releases can be found here. IIRC, GRT made the cassettes used by labels to release prerecorded cassettes; guess this was their attempt at diversification.

There was a two-fer issued with the same name: Oh, I wasn't aware of any Argo vinyl twofers! Never saw one so far! It was a series issued when Argo/Chess was owned by some faceless corporation in the mid-70's. I had this one, I think as a French import:

The Horowitz Carnegie box is down to $62.10 + shipping from an Amazon reseller.

4 Men With Beards is a legitimate reissue label. I have their release of Beefheart's Decals album. They've also put out Blue Afternoon on vinyl. The original vinyl release of Starsailor had a very odd sound quality.

Anyone see this movie?

On iTunes trailers, I noticed a trailer for a new documentary on Clark Terry, called "Keep On Keepin' On." Documentary in theaters 9/19. The trailer's pretty moving.

Tim was one of my favorites back in the day. I first saw him opening for Zappa's Grand Wazoo at the Felt Forum, NYC, in 1972; I saw him twice in Central Park in 1973 and 1974; and I saw him at Max's Kansas City a few weeks before he died in 1975. His voice was just this enormous presence; it filled the room. I've always loved Blue Afternoon the best, followed by Happy Sad and Lorca. Would love to see a discography of those sessions. BTW, Starsailor is available as a legitimate download from eMusic.

There was a two-fer issued with the same name:

Sad that none of these are coming anywhere near Houston.

Amazon doesn't have any smaller covers (the ones they show on the product page aren't conventional jpg's, and won't appear here), and Amazon is where I see this new release info. Sorry it's causing problems for you.
