    Bob Dylan corner

Another thing that bugs me about Another Self Portrait is that it ignores the material on "Dylan" (that bastard child of outtakes which Columbia released in spite in 1973). These tracks were from the same sessions as Self Portrait and New Morning, with even more hideous sweetening. But from which recording sessions did they originate? What did they sound like originally, without overdubs? Who plays on them? Was the "intent" of originally recording these tracks similar to those on Another Self Portrait? The "Dylan" album is just hanging out there, begging for explanation and context. And they actually could have fit these tracks on the first two discs of ASP.
  4. Thingin is an excellent date, and very well recorded.
  5. I think solo Tatum at his best was when he was lively and astonishing, often in front of a small audience. The Pablo material (recorded towards the end of his career) is slower and more maudlin. Of the good solo Tatum, unfortunately many of the surviving air checks and such have fairly bad audio quality, which in these cases do get in the way of listening pleasure. I'd characterize much of the Storyville box this way. So we're talking about the combination of virtuosity, enjoyable performances, and listening pleasure. I'd start here: Originally 3 LPs, recorded at someone's house in front of a lively, appreciative crowd. This is the other one that comes to mind:
  6. Interesting little video about a pressing plant: Bloomberg BusinessWeek
  7. The "Groups" is a wonderful box; highly recommended. It's surprising to hear how Tatum blossomed in a band - he's good with a drummer kicking him, and he's a surprisingly good supporting pianist. The solo box I find kinda draggy, and think there's better Tatum out there.
  8. I was just listening to this; wonderful stuff:
  9. Good luck in San Antonio! And try to play Houston, if you can!
  10. Drums Around The Corner may be the best of Blakey's "drum" dates.
  11. No, just an IPhone 4 and my IMac computer. There's a Kindle app for the iMac (free, available through the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kindle/id405399194?mt=12) and for the iPhone; I wouldn't recommend the iPhone app, as the small screen size makes reading a bit tedious. Thanks mjzee. I just downloaded the app, downloaded "Wail" for $9.99, and am in business. A separate Kindle might make sense later on for vacations and the like. OK, so now, for convenience sake, install the Kindle app for your iPhone. You can read the same copy of Wail on both devices. Having it on the iPhone would allow you to look up something on a moment's notice; might be handy.

  13. If you have an iPad, you can use the free Kindle app.

    Dexter Gordon

It looks to be the same date as this; the CD has two additional tracks.
  15. By the way, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is $399.00. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007XTE6YW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=RVSBV717YT9&coliid=I23UY08H1W9ZI4 The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is always $399, regardless of where you buy it (I got it from Crutchfield). I have it in red, which looks great.

    Hank Jones

Clicking my way through CDJapan while the board was down, I found a number of Hank Jones titles I had never seen before. This one gave me chills:
  17. CDJapan shows the following 3 titles with release dates of June 18. No label listed, or much other useful information. Have these been previously available? Interestingly, the one common element they have is Kenny Drew.
  18. Just listened to disc 1. Track 14, Embraceable You, clearly shows radio static.
  19. Thanks for posting the link. It looks like all titles that weren't released when originally recorded; interesting theme. I've wanted Z.T.'s Blues for awhile now, so I'll be getting that. These are now available at CDJapan.
  20. I hope the Ike Quebec - Easy Living has the three extra quartet tracks. The rest is on the Bennie Green Mosaic Select. What is on Sonny Clark Quintets? At first, I thought it was the material on "My Conception," but I see that title is also being released.
  21. Thanks for posting the link. It looks like all titles that weren't released when originally recorded; interesting theme. I've wanted Z.T.'s Blues for awhile now, so I'll be getting that.
  22. On Atlantic circa 1970:
  23. Some have pointed out that he didn't have great ratings on CC - he was regularly bested by Adult Swim.
  24. I regret that ESP didn't use the covers from their 4 original releases - those were really nice. This new package looks like it could have been designed by the ESP circa 1965 (not a compliment).
