  1. There have been many discussions on this board about Mac vs. PCs. The Mac mini costs $699, and there's really no discounting - that's the price. You can probably find better deals on PCs - faster processors, more RAM, larger hard drives and the such. In my experience, with a Mac you have software and hardware that works, and far fewer worries about viruses. The peace of mind factor is worth the difference in price.
  2. Mingus: Mingus Ah Um, Mingus Dynasty, Tijuana Moods - $9.68 from an Amazon reseller: Mingus Brubeck: Jazz Goes To College, Brubeck Plays Brubeck, Gone With The Wind, Brandenburg Gate Revisited, Jazz Impressions Of New York - $15.81 from an Amazon reseller: Brubeck
  3. Get a Mac Mini, pair with your existing peripherals (or spring for a larger monitor). Your troubles will go away.
  4. I think the trick is exposing yourself to music and growing that way. More and varied music is better than less. Hearing a piece of music is better than reading about it in a book but not being able to hear it. Once you hear it, you can form your own opinions and make your own connections. You could even then disagree with the person who wrote the book.
  5. Has there been a thread like this before? If so, please merge. This one might be more Prestige than Blue Note:
  6. We use TuneIn radio; my wife loves it.
  7. I have a Mac, so the actual location might vary on a PC, but do something like Preferences... then Advanced... then under Network there's a button to clear your cache. You might also consider adding RAM to your desktop. It's probably dirt cheap, and easy to do yourself.
  8. Did you get to Organissimo.org/forum with no problems? Then I'm not sure it's due to malware. If you have an old computer, you might be running out of memory; that can do all sorts of weird things. Reboot, clean out your cache, see what happens. Also, which browser do you use? IE6 is extremely buggy at this point; try switching to Firefox or Google Chrome.
  9. Agreed. And there was something about the audible compression necessary to squeeze 32 minutes onto an LP side that adds to the moody, mysterious nature of the music.
  10. Soul People is available here; it doesn't include "People":
  11. I love Loved Him Madly, Maiysha, Honky Tonk, Rated X, and Calypso Frelimo. Side 4 (Red China Blues, Mtume, and Billy Preston) is forgettable, tho Billy Preston has a nice groove. And extra points for the glasses he's wearing on the cover!
  12. Well said.
  13. Amazon's just listed some interesting EMI Japan reissues. Good price, too: $17.06. Titles include Eddie Costa Memorial Concert, Eddie Costa - Vinnie Burke Trio, Howard Rumsey - Double or Nothin', Roy Ayers - West Coast Vibes, Junior Mance - Straight Ahead, Randy Weston - Highlife, Randy Weston - Live at the Five Spot.
  14. "Please extricate my head from this tree."
  15. The Marantz looks like my first receiver, bought from Crazy Eddie himself in 1972 (along with my Garrard Zero-100 and a pair of Martin speakers). I remember the lovely blue light emanating from the radio station frequency list (with the red from the pointer), and the smooth feel of the horizontal dial to change the radio station. But with time, the knobs and push buttons emitted much static, and I moved on to other things. Still, very fond memories.
  16. Its population might be tiny, just half that of London, but Norway makes a big noise in the jazz world. Ever since saxophonist Jan Garbarek gave a distinctive Nordic slant to European jazz in the 1970s, the country’s musicians have moved increasingly to the fore. If further evidence of their momentum were needed, next month’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival – curated this year by Jamie Cullum – will showcase a contingent of Norway’s main players, including pianist Tord Gustavsen who will premiere a festival commission, and trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, in a beats-and-electronica collaboration with drummer Martin France. It is the long winters, vast, solitary spaces and sparse population that provide the superficial explanations for the “Norwegianness” of Norwegian jazz. But the music’s melodic purity and textural ambience has a more organic origin – as the product of open-minded musicians working in a richly diverse and thriving national musical culture; one supported by an oil-rich government. I meet both Gustavsen and Molvaer in Oslo – the former is in town for a gig with the organmaster of the city’s cathedral and the latter is producing his next album. The background similarities between the two turn out to be as striking as the different career paths they have taken. More here: Financial Times
  17. Some Ictus titles have surfaced on eMusic: Ictus - eMusic
  18. For those interested, there's an interview with Creed Taylor in today's Wall St Journal (or at least it's in the online edition). I'll post a link to it tomorrow if someone else doesn't do it first.
  19. Still on backorder; haven't received it yet.
  20. Sid Dithers? SCTV
  21. I have this: which is an excellent overview of her Verve work. Not sure I need more than this. I smile whenever I hear "Rhode Island Is Famous For You."
  22. I wish I hadn't seen that.
