  1. It dropped to 17 degrees in Houston last night, with 40 mph winds. Interesting night. We covered all the bushes, and brought in anything that could be blown around. The heating system can't really cope, because the houses aren't really built for this sort of weather, but we're doing OK. Other neighborhoods have had sporadic outages when branches were blown against power lines, but overall the system is coping with power demand. Right now it's 32 degrees. It'll be cold the next two nights; next week it'll hit 70 again.
  2. Disc 1. Sound quality is very nice and smooth. Intriguing note: Mosaic says the front cover photo is "With the J.J. Johnson Quintet at The Village Vanguard, NYC, July 1960." Was this recorded? Why was Francis Wolff photographing it?
  3. I had the 7 Billie Holiday discs on King Jazz. Sound was OK, and I played them until supplanted by the superior-sounding Sony box. But they were cheap back in the day; don’t know what a Freddie Keppard would cost today. I was always intrigued by George Avakian’s participation in the label; seemed like a real break from working with the major labels.
  4. Just finished listening to this one; very nice!
  5. First time I've heard this. What a wonderful singer.
  6. I see no CDs offered on Ebay, and an Amazon reviewer from Spain wrote: Tomás Segura Salvador 1.0 out of 5 stars Es un LP y no un CD Reviewed in Spain on February 11, 2022 Verified Purchase No me ha gustado el formato.
  7. But the listing could be in error; it might actually be an LP.
  8. Amazon is currently offering a CD of Carnegie Blues for $14.29, apparently made by Universal: https://www.amazon.com/Jazz-At-Philharmonic-Lester-Carnegie/dp/B07896LHHR/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2KRU91QORFP86&keywords=lester+young+carnegie+blues&qid=1671235795&sprefix=lester+young+carnegie+blues%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-1
  9. Just received the December 2022 issue. The disc features Franck's Symphony in D minor. I find I have only one other version of it, conducted by Toscanini.
  10. Funny that they were basically an organ trio + percussionist.
  11. They were a great band, and Danelli was a huge part of it. RIP.
  12. Just got the book today. Huge book, as mentioned, but it's surprisingly lightweight. They do amazing things with paper technology these days.
  13. March 3, 1968, from archive.org.
  14. Seems like quite a few. These are currently available from Amazon:
  15. I'm on the fence about this one. The format (long blowing jams on uninteresting standards) bores me - I barely made it through the JATP '40's box. All the usual suspects are here: Lady Be Good (2x), Indiana (2x), Idaho, Honeysuckle Rose, Tea For Two, Stomping' At The Savoy (3x). Nat Hentoff famously said that jazz is the sound of surprise, and, boy, this ain't it. Also, I already own the Getz/J.J. material, and an LP "JATP - The Coleman Hawkins Set" on Verve that may be duplicated here. Reviewing my collection, I see that I own far more '50's JATP on Pablo than I do on Verve: Frankfurt 1952, Tokyo 1953, and Hartford 1953.

    Ben Webster

    True that.
  17. 416 pages of footnotes!?! Impressive! Is Sonny still working on his autobiography, or is this in lieu of that?
