Release date March 3: Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott returns with the release of Corridors, his third album for Blue Note Records, and first compositional treatment of trio context: saxophone, bass, and drums. Corridors unveils an exposed rumination from the Houston-born artist and his acclaimed collaborators: saxophonist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers. Born during the pandemic lockdown, the record focuses on posing outward questions instead of inward contemplation. CD Softpak. Release date March 17: The Layers is a stunning companion piece to guitarist Julian Lage's acclaimed 2022 album View With A Room. The collection features six original pieces featuring the trio of bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King with the addition of guitar icon Bill Frisell. Intimate and gorgeous, The Layers is a welcome additional offering from this meeting of two of modern jazz's most distinctive voices with one of the music's most skilled and inventive rhythm sections. Release date April 7: Saxophonist and composer Walter Smith III has signed with Blue Note Records and enters a new era of his band leading career with the release of return to casual, the long-anticipated follow-up to his 2014 recording still casual. Reprising their bandmate roles, pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Matt Stevens, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Kendrick Scott reveal a seasoned depth of dimension alongside featured guest appearances by trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and pianist James Francies.

Release date February 24: Kenny Barron is a jazz master. The 11-time GRAMMY nominee was honored as a "Jazz master" by the NEA, received the Living Legacy Jazz Award, was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame and named "best pianist" by the Jazz Journalists Association six times. He has collaborated with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Yusef Lateef, Chet Baker and Stan Getz. His first solo album in 30 years, The Source, was recorded at the Théâtre d'Athénée in Paris in July 2022 to inaugurate the ARTWORK RECORDS label launch. This album is an intimate face-to-face encounter between the pianist and his instrument. It is a look back on his discography with a raw modernity.

Wonder if it's the same people who are targeting the Hoffman boards.

His songs are so much a part of my childhood. I'm thinking of Do You Know The Way To San Jose? That lilting samba beat, the story of the song, Dionne Warwick's little but not-so-little voice, and how percussively she sang the song...I'm not sure there was anything quite like those Bacharach-David songs on the radio. Many thanks, and R.I.P.

I haven't read any of the prior comments. 1) I know this tune. Written by Wes M? I like how the pianist takes his time. Guitarist sounds a little like Pat Martino. Very nice and relaxing, has a good groove. 2) I'm guessing the scatter is not the pianist. Is the pianist Jimmy Rowles? Nice performance. 3) SQ sounds like the 50's. I don't know the tune. It's difficult to make a trumpet trio interesting. I like the trumpeter; the bassist is a little too on-the-beat. 4) Leader has listened to a lot of Mingus. Jack Walrath? Bassist has a good sense of time...unless that's not a bassist. Bob Stewart on tuba? Is this all brass? First 4 tracks: A lot of sense of space. None can be considered dense. 5) Nice latin groove. It is Ricky Ford? Every jazz band should have a conga player. 6) Pretty Brazilian tune. Reminiscent of Getz/Gilberto. 7) I don't know what language this is. Singer has a nice voice. Without knowing the words, I had a hard time relating to it or enjoying it. Good performance. 8. I like this. Laid back but insistent. Sax has a great tone. Nice front line: sax, trumpet (flugelhorn?), guitar. Has a nice "Maiden Voyage" vibe. 9) Flute, guitar & piano. Has a late 50's vibe (also the hard panning). Also cello! Chico Hamilton? I like this. 10) Piano - bass. Bassist is obviously not afraid of the pianist. Nice interplay. I'm curious who they are. Wish the pianist stepped out more. Good stuff. 11) More bass, then baritone. That's it - a duo? Huh. I like the control the bari exhibits - good tone. Nice arrangement, but could've used more musicians. 12) Nice arrangement. Very controlled. Sax sounds like it could bust out, but stays confined. The bongos give it an exotic feel. This one surprised me. Sounds romantic, but with a sinister undertone. 13) Organ only. Sounds a little sleepy. Organist has chops, but it didn't do much for me. What does he sing at the end? 14) Finishing off with a big band. Kinda berserk big band! The vibes should be a giveaway, but no one comes to mind. The vocal sounds more appropriate for Halloween. Good fun. Good BFT! I look forward to the reveal.

This thread brings to mind John Mendelsohn's classic put-down review in Rolling Stone of Led Zeppelin II, specifically that Plant "is rumored to sing some notes on this record that only dogs can hear."

It should be a great show; enjoy! They once broadcast a complete concert (it may have been an in-the-studio concert) with Buddy Miller subbing for Marc Ribot, on the tour that supported Raising Sand. It was great, but they never reran it and never offered it on DVD. Would love to see it again; it rocked harder than the album.

I remember when Clive Davis was starting up Arista, he made a big splash by announcing Arista Freedom and releasing all those Montreux dates. Nice presentation, good promotion…ironic given it was Davis who effected the big jazz purge at Columbia. Arista Freedom helped give Arista a big dose of respectability it wasn’t getting from Tony Orlando & Dawn. Much later, Candid had that great run of Stacey Kent albums - still some of my favorite jazz vocal dates. And of course he achieved so much more besides. RIP.
