(3022) and Kelly At Midnight (3011), all material was transferred from original tapes. The performances within each session appear in that order in which they were made. The single exception I s the first version of "Runnin'" (session F) which appears out of sequence because the CD timing. There are minor defects like the bass buzz toward the end of take two of "Autumn Leaves" (session I), which were in the original source. The edit at 1:12 into take nine of "Scotch and Water (aka Joe's Avenue)" was necessitated by loud eletronic noise that momentarily marred the original recording. -
Looks great!

My favorite moment from that concert: Mahavishnu came out, and before the first song, McLaughlin spoke to the audience, telling them what a beautiful night it was, the vibe feels so good, and we should all take a moment to feel the silence, to become one with the moment, to prepare ourselves for the music that was to follow... and the entire Nassau Coliseum became quiet...until, about 20 seconds into the silence, some guys in the balcony yelled out "FUCK YOU!!!!!" The whole crowd erupted into laughter and applause. It was an archetypal New York moment.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
For those who enjoy classical music, Classical Centerstage Store (which I believe is owned and run by Universal) is having a huge sale on boxed sets, with discounts of 50% or more. Much to love here: https://classical.centerstagestore.com/collections/classical-box-set-sale -
Great news!

Release date November 4: Jason Marshall returns with an incredibly soulful date featuring some of New York's finest including pianist Marc Cary, bassist Gerald Cannon and drummer Willie Jones III. Recorded at the studios of Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey and produced by Jeremy Pelt. Jason has developed a style that encompasses the whole of African-American music. Release date January 20: 6 of New York City's heaviest hitters convene at RVG studios & presents music built to tickle your mind, hit you in the heart & get your feet tappin'. The Heavy Hitters music is built to tickle your mind, hit you in the heart and get your head swaying back and forth. We wanted to make soulful kickass swinging music that you might have heard on a Blue Note record back in the day. Not to look back but to say this is still relevant because this is happening right now. For us it's pretty much what we've been doing all of our lives. And of course we got to record it at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, a place I feel we are so lucky to still have up and running and that is putting out the same great sound we have all loved for all these years. To me it's a true "Jazz" sound. Track Listing: Hub New Day Silverdust Un Dia Es Un Dia Big Richard Chainsaw This Is Something New Cedar Land Bluesit

Release date November 17: Tenor saxophonist Houston Person's playing has a lot in common with an ideally brewed cup of coffee. Both are bold, satisfying, smooth, eye-opening and addictive once experienced. Whether it be during smoldering blues-tinged numbers, up-tempo takes on old favorites, or sultry, late-night balladry, Person never fails to deliver a performance where expressivity reigns supreme. The band is made up of a group from Person's cadre of regular colleagues with guitar great Russell Malone adding his sensitive voicings and swinging rhythms to the mix. The album's title is an homage to the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Person's first recording as a leader was done at Rudy's fabled Englewood Cliffs studio and they continued their friendship until Van Gelder's passing. But this is a not a backward-looking memorial album. That is not Person's style. Based on his performance schedule and his extensive discography, Houston Person, like his fans, is always looking forward to his next gig.

Release date December 2: Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen, an ECM musician for more than fifty years, is a masterful player who has always welcomed a challenge. His first recording with his new quartet - including rising stars Marius Neset and Helge Lien (both bandleaders in their own right) - is almost entirely improvised. The players make the leap of faith together and find and develop forms in the moment, an object lesson in spontaneous group creativity. Affirmation was recorded in 2021 at Oslo's Rainbow Studio. Release date December 9: ECM recording artists and key jazz musicians from several generations unite on `Once Around the Room' to celebrate the musical legacy of drum icon Paul Motian in a big way. Jakob Bro and Joe Lovano lead an ensemble through fiery originals that recall the idioms and idiosyncrasies which Motian brought to light over six influential decades behind the drums. Featuring Larry Grenadier, Thomas Morgan and Anders Christensen on bass, as well as Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy on drums.

Sony/Legacy sets on "Music on CD"
mjzee replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They can also do Artie Shaw. -
I added a CD recorder to my hi-fi setup (a Tascam CD-RW900MKII). I record the LP onto that, then edit and transfer the music on my computer. If you don't need a turntable at home, that might be the best way to go. You could simply record the tracks you need onto the CDR disc, and play it at the station from there.
-
BTW, there's a great piece in WSJ by Marc Myers on Stevie Wonder's Talking Book, which just turned 50.

Sony/Legacy sets on "Music on CD"

Listening now to their Dexter box. Fine sound, booklet enclosed. I would love for them to rerelease the second Duke box. -
Here's some more fodder for discussion: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/ratings/6-highest-rated/1973/1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_200_number-one_albums_of_1973 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_in_music https://bestsellingalbums.org/year/1973 One thing that jumps out at me are the number of albums I knew and listened-to at the time (that I either owned or heard at friends' houses) but that I didn't love. For example, Steely Dan's Countdown To Ecstasy. So maybe that's part of the story of 1973: albums that I knew but didn't feel that need to hear. Others in this category: The Who's Quadrophenia, Band On The Run, Paul Simon's Rhymin' Simon, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (you couldn't get away from Elton John that year), A Wizard A True Star (but I loved Something Anything), Springsteen's The Wild The Innocent (boy they were pushing Bruce that year), Ringo Starr's Ringo, The Kinks' Preservation Act 1, Fleetwood Mac's Mystery To Me, Bowie's Pin Ups...so, yeah, there's something to the notion that 1973 wasn't a great year.

I just noticed this (also a Gary Smulyan) on Dusty Groove, but the label is credited as Stateside, not SteepleChase. I wonder if there's a change in label ownership.

I always thought Dark Side Of The Moon was a smoke dope in college/test out your stereo album.

This thread has morphed into an interesting discussion about 1973 rock. I can't say that at the time I noticed a distinct drop-off in quality, although music styles do morph. Dylan reappeared with Planet Waves, which I really liked. Reggae was making inroads with The Wailers' Burnin', The Harder They Come soundtrack, and Toots & The Maytals' Funky Kingston. I saw Zappa 5 or 6 times that year (including 4 times within 2 weeks)...sometimes less is more, y'know? The Dead released Wake Of The Flood, which was excellent if a little soft, and Garcia/Saunders released a great double album. I also saw The Dead for the first time that year. Speaking of soft, Jackson Browne released For Everyman, which I liked, and which helped set the tone for the next few years. John Lennon's Mind Games was good. King Crimson's Larks' Tongues In Aspic was excellent. I liked Houses Of The Holy more than I did Zoso. Leo Kottke did the great My Feet Are Smiling. Mahavishnu's Between Nothingness & Eternity blew me away (I was also at the show). I loved Neil Young's Time Fades Away, also Soft Machine 7. On the other hand, Beefheart went off-the-charts bad with Unconditionally Guaranteed and that tour with The Tragic Band. Iggy released Raw Power, which was certainly strange (should have been recorded in Detroit). Tim Buckley's Sefronia: I wish I could have liked it more. Jazz-wise, 1973 was my first exposure to Oregon and Sam Rivers (both live). Also first saw Sun Ra, but wasn't impressed. I always saw Grand Funk as a Monkees-type phenomenon. Didn't bother me, didn't affect me, but thankfully they weren't played much on NYC radio (except for that "I'm getting closer to my home" song...boy, there were a lot of songs at the time about wanting to go home, going home, leaving home, etc.).

And then there was this, produced by FZ:

You also have to wonder if this dual tour is where Cosmik Debris came from.
