  1. Maybe a japanese licensed version will work for Masabumi Kikuchi? I have a wonderful Keith Jarrett filter. I don't listen to him... LWayne

  5. Updated with revisions and new listings: I am looking to clear out some very good CDs which I just don’t listen too much anymore. 6. Bought the following at my local brick & mortar store (Paul's CDs): Bobby Broom "Plays for Monk" Henry Threadgill "This Brings Us To, Volume 2" Pat Martino "El Hombre" (RVG) Version LWayne
  7. I have two CDs by Anthony Brown. Both "Monk's Mood" and "Far East Suite" are well done and worth owning. If I recall correctly, the "Monk's Mood" received a (rare) 5 star review in Downbeat a couple of years back. LWayne
  8. Me three. Might be the front-runner for best CD of the year (between this CD, Frank Kimbrough, and Jason Moran CDs) LWaynw
  9. Cam anyone send me a PM with the link as to the mystery site that has audio clips of the concert? Thanks, LWayne
  10. Two weeks ago I was in New York for one of the last business trips I will be taking for my company (I am leaving in mid-November) and was fortunate to catch week two of the Paul Motian/ Joe Lovano/ Bill Frisell Trio at the Village Vanguard. Although I live in Pittsburgh, this has become somewhat of an annual event for me. While this was probably the eighth or ninth time that I have caught this group during their annual Labor Day residency at the Vanguard, I can’t recall enjoying myself more than this last performance. We attended the first set on Tuesday, August 31st, which happened to be the first performance where Joe Lovano was back in the fold. Subbing for Joe the first week were Tony Malaby and Mark Turner, who, reportedly turned in a remarkable performance according to the NY Times Review. Nonetheless, it was great to see the original trio back together. The trio was in rare form that night. While it was their first set together during the second week, it was obvious that Motian/Lovano/Frisell have an instant chemistry perfected over the years of playing together. Almost a sympathetic ability to launch into a set and instantly coalesce. The group played a flawless set. While the names of all the songs of the set list escape me, they trio played great versions of “I Wish I Knew”, “Body and Soul”, and, of course, “Drum Music”; their standard song to end of the set. Bill Frisell seemed to focus more on the acoustic range of his guitar and less on special effects than I recall from the past (in keeping with his latest CD “Beautiful Dreamers”), but Joe Lovano’s husky tenor was as powerful and dynamic as ever. As always, Paul Motian kept time in his own idiosyncratic way with the perfect punctuation on brush or cymbal. A sublime set of music! Is there a better non-piano jazz trio performing today? Regards, LWayne
  11. During my recent ordering problems with Mosaic, during my successful attempts to get an undamaged box for the new Ahmad Jamal set, Mosaic erroneously sent me a lid and box (no CDs or booklet, just the container) for the Jazz Crusaders set. Box is in mint shape and free to a good home. Mosaic does not want it back and I did not want to through it away. You pay for shipping. Takers? LWayne
  12. Any other feedback on the new Dino Saluzzi? I was a big fan of "Ojos Negros" and "Responsorium" (Liked the latter better). Thanks, LWayne
  13. My replacement Jamal box arrived today (successful after the third try). What I did notice is that the first box lid that I received, although damaged, had the print crooked on the spine and nearer the top. The replacement lid had fairly straight type, but centered near the bottom. Strange. LWayne
  14. I have had some bad experience with the delivery of my Ahmad Jamal Mosaic. When I originally received the package last Saturday, the box was crushed. When Mosaic was shipping their box sets directly, they would always fill the box with Styrofoam packing peanuts or plastic bubble wrap. A week later after my third call I still have not received a replacement box. Mosaic is sinking really quickly on my "discretionary spending" list. LWayne
  15. I have had some bad experience with the delivery of my Ahmad Jamal Mosaic. When I originally received the package last Saturday, the box was crushed. When Mosaic was shipping their box sets directly, they would always fill the box with Styrofoam packing peanuts or plastic bubble wrap. Since they have outsourced the shipping and delivery to 3PL, my box came half empty with just one thin piece of bubble wrap. My Mosaic box was damaged and the lid also had a mis-print to boot! Unfortunately the lid of the box has a sizable crease in the side, and, as a result, the printing was crooked. Very unlike Mosaic from my experience. I called Customer Service who agreed to send out a replacement box. That replacement shipment arrived on Thursday, and, you guessed it, the shipping box was also damaged. Good news: the Mosaic box was not damaged. Bad news: they sent me the Jazz Crusaders box as a replacement rather than Ahmad Jamal. After my second long distance call to Mosaic on Friday, they promised to rectify the problem and send me a replacement Ahmad Jamal box. Hopefully, the third time is a charm! I am surprised that they did not offer any apologies for my troubles. Makes you wonder about their Customer Service and how much they value their clientele. Oh well… LWayne
  16. I still have regrets that I could not catch Henry Threadgill and ZOOID at the Jazz Gallert last February as my trip to NYC was cancelled due to the snow. Can anyone advise a web resource that my list his (infrequent) touring schedule? Also, any comments on the "Up Popped the Tape" LP? I was thinking of trying to track down that vinyl for a friend of mine in Germany. Thanks, LWayne
  17. Those of us here in Pittsburgh were certainly lucky to be able to hear Gene Ludwig play on a regular basis. Very much reminded me of the Jack McDuff and Jimmy McGriff school moreso than Jimmy Smith. He was a local legend and his recordings with Jimmy Ponder on guitar are a treasure. There will be a memorial service commemorating him on Wednesday, July 21st at Palmieri's Restaurant in Monroeville/Plum area. LWayne
  18. For sale $8 (plus shipping) Two CD set on Cryptogramophone(one live and one studio). Like new condition. Interested? LWayne
  19. Gave a listen to it this weekend. First impression is that is a great recording-easily his best since "Black Stars". It will certainly be on my end of year "best of" list. LWayne
  20. I was in Chicago on business yesterday and caught both sets of the Dave Holland Quintet at the new location (former Dearborn Station on Plymouth Court) of the Jazz Showcase. I will post a more detailed review soon, but needless to say that the music was transcendent! LWayne
  21. Wish I could have been there my friend. I am sure it was a great night of music. LWayne
  22. RIP Hank and God Bless! Sure glad I got to hear him twice: once with Joe Lovano about six or seven years ago (2004) debuting the “Joyous Encounter” album at the Iridium and also last August celebrating his 91st birthday at Birdland. Both were great sets, full of fun, and innovative takes on treasured standards. After the Iridium show, I went backstage to get an autograph and spent a little while talking to Hank. He was very gracious and kind and spoke to me about the recent passing of his brother Elvin. He spent several minutes reminiscing about the abundance of talent of his younger siblings, Elvin and Thad. He stated that he missed them and how difficult it was for him to see them go, being the oldest. He managed a smile, looked me in the eyes and declared that he was merely the “lucky one” to have survived and played so long. His sense of humility was moving. This was truly an elegant and classy man. I will mourn his passing but celebrate his life as well. Regards, LWayne
  23. I should have checked my post on Monday. I did wind up going to see "Honeyboy" at the Chicago Cultural Center (old library) since I had a customer meeting being delayed. Great set and I bought an autographed CD from him. LWayne
  24. Well my expectations would have been wrong. Just called the Jazz Showcase and they confirmed that Enrico Rava had to cancel due to an injury, but his band will be there nonetheless. What a shame as I was really looking forward to catching him! Any other alternatives for Monday night? Might try Pat Metheny after all, but tickets are pricey. Perhaps there is a "same day" discount. I missed Henry Threadgill earlier this year, and now Rava. LWayne
