  1. Andrew Hill has long been my favorite jazz musician. I was fortunate enough to catch him playing live twice: first, with his quartet at the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. Even more memorable was a rare solo piano performance a couple years later at An Die Musik in Baltimore. Great performance and got to hear his artistry from the first row. Close enough to feel the vibrations of the piano as well as enjoy the sound. Just as special was that he spent some time in the small bar between sets with the audience. Remarkably, only a couple of people came to talk with Andrew, and my wife and I were able to spend quite some time in conversation. I recall being quite nervous and intimidated; but fortunate that he was quite engaging and he had no other pressing engagements. Truly a special memory with one of the legends. LWayne

    J.D. Allen

J.D. Allen is a monster talent. His album "Victory!" from a couple of years back is in constant play rotation. Great album. LWayne

  4. Over the years, I have probably seen Bill Frisell 20-25 times in different formats, Paul Motian about 20 times, and Joe Lovano about 12-15 times. (Bet you can't guess who my favorite trio was)... LWayne

  11. Still prefer buying CDs (and vinyl on occasion) at my local brick and mortar. The owner is a great guy and often special order for me. This IS supporting local retail when you have established a bond. No Amazon for me, except as a last resort. BTW, I am always amazed at how often jazz musicians do not carry copies of their recent releases with them for sale. IMHO they are missing out on some incremental revenue. Particularly when CD companies provide a certain number of promos that can be sold at a higher profit margin by the artist himself. Quite a few concerts at a well-known local venue where the musician could have sold many a physical CD to an eager audience that still seeks out product rather than download. For me, I still prefer the shopping experience, tangible product, and the occasional autograph to make it all very special. LWayne
  12. My two guys, Miles (Davis) and (Gerry) Mulligan are enjoying their special day. Heck, every day should be national cat day! LWayne

  14. Tom L Sent PM on newly listed Bill Evans/ Paris Volume 1 CD. Thanks, LWayne
  15. Agreed that I need to give it another spin. I didn't like it upon first hearing it, although all of the members of the group are great players. My initial impression of the album is that was very dull; overwhelmed by the ECM type of production. Regards, LWayne
  16. Grove City College was my undergrad alma mater. More of a surprise that it didn't rank higher on the sober meter. LWayne
  17. Please PM if you have a copy to trade or sell. Interested in VG condition or better. Thanks, LWayne
  18. I believe the bar they played at was called "Will's Pub". I saw Sam and the orchestra there in 2005. Regards, LWayne
  19. Looking for CD version of "Up Popped the Devil" by (the vastly underrated) Mal Waldron on Enja. Only found $40 used copy on Amazon. Hope some board member will know of a spare copy. Thanks, LWayne
  20. Congrats & Welcome Back! LWayne
  21. Gotta go with "Glass Bead Games". Great CD! At a recent concert, Chris Potter also reminisced on how this record was a big influence on him as well. Good enough recommendation for me. LWayne
