  1. Works great! My phone number leads to a museum in England, a bank in Nebraska and a female stripper in Hungary
  2. I read a discussion on rec.music.bluenote on this subject. Apparently there are no official recordings and no bootlegs of Monk and Mingus playing together. According to the "Straight No chaser" Monk biography, they played together on the Steve Allen TV show of June 6, 1955.
  3. Although this will probably stretch the notion of "alternate takes" too much (it's an alternate band), I will add those on Andrew Hill's Grass Roots Strickly speaking of alternate takes made during one session, my favourites are those in the Bird/Dial and Coltrane/Atlantic boxes.
  4. I have "This is our music", "The Shape of jazz to come" and "Free jazz" on reissues in the "Atlantic Original Sound" series, made by Warner Germany in 1998. The sound of the quartet sessions is very good and much improved compared to the early 90's reissues ( I haven´t heard the box set). "Free Jazz" is not such a great recording technically so the new CD does not sound much better. Unfortunately no other Ornette albums appeared in this series. "The Shape ..." is available everywhere, but "Our music" was hard to find. Maybe the remastering is the same as the Sepia Tone release, which is available in the US only.
  5. This will not work with pictures of course B)
  6. Lol Coxhill BTW: The fastest way to find out if a name has already been used is to click on "Print this topic" on the low right corner of the screen. This will list the whole thread content on one single browser page (it won't print anything). Using Ctrl-F you will then be able to search the entire thread for the name you intend to use.
  7. Never before have there been that many Coltrane, Miles, Evans, Monk and Pepper boxes avalable on ebay Germany at the same time http://listings.ebay.de/aw/plistings/list/...ex.html?from=R4
  8. I placed my order on the website last sunday and received a confirmation email on tuesday. Only 2 of 29 items (2 OJC LPs) were not available. Of the supercheap box sets, I ordered the Monk, Evans/Riverside and Art Pepper.

  10. I hope Blue Note doesn't rely on Norah's bassist to run their board http://www.norahjones.com/board/default.htm

I thought that this great album never made it to CD.
  12. I do a lot of online shopping (european and US companies) and never get spammed. Just choose NO when an online registration asks if you want "promotional offers from selected partners". When I ended my 3 month subscription last year, I only received a "Please come back" message and maybe one or two others from emusic.com.
  13. The box sets are early ZYX releases, when they didn't try to remaster the stuff. I have the Dolphy set and it sounds very good.
  14. This is the direct link to the newest jazz arrivals: http://emusic.com/new/291/
  15. Wow, that's just insane! They will probably be sold out in a few days. I wonder why Zweitausendeins is doing this, those Fantasy boxes were available for about $5/CD for the last couple of years, and to my knowledge Fantasy does not intend to put out new remastered versions.
  16. Very good performance, clear and full mono sound. A no-brainer indeed.
  17. Other RTE/Europe1 recordings have been reissued by Laserlight as well. Yesterday I was at the FNAC in Brussels and saw a Miles Davis 1973 concert and a CD with two Jimmy Giuffre recordings from 1960 and 1965, for 6 Euro each. Both have been available before on french labels, but at a higher price. I have the Giuffre set and while the music is good (the 1965 session is slightly out), listening is marred by the intolerant behaviour of the Paris audience (which also whistled during Coltrane's more explorative 1960 solos).
  18. Translation of "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud": The US titles for the movie have been "Elevator to the Gallows" (video release) and "Frantic" (cinema), while the UK title was "Lift to the scaffold" Allmovie link BBC link Milestones link
  19. You also left out "Into somethin'" Nice idea for a poll!
  20. Yes, the local Zweitausendeins stores always have CDs that are not listed online. I only know their Munich shop, the jazz "department" is only a small corner in the room, but packed with incredible bargains. I´d say they have the lowest prices worldwide (and it includes 16% VAT). Many box sets are available for $5/CD.
  21. There is a shortcut: Just type a message with the content "42" (without quotation marks) at the end of the thread.
  22. This is horrendous indeed, and looks like a mistake. In my country (Luxembourg) I have to pay 19% customs fee on small shipments valued above 22 Euro (from a company) respectively 45 Euro (from an indidual). This includes VAT. A lot of shipments slip though customs, although controls have gotten much tighter lately. The customs webpage mentions EU legislation, so the rules may be the same for all EU countries. http://www.etat.lu/DO/petitsenvois.htm One problem I had in the past was with shipments from the US made by Parcel services. They arrived at Frankfurt airport, the EU centre of the parcel company, where a german subsiduary made the customs declaration and charged me 20 Euro for this service, in addition to the customs fee. I had to pay more than 60 Euro for an Andrew Hill Mosaic that I auctioned for $250. That's why I always request to have things sent by regular airmail.
  23. That website surprised me. I thought that Minor Music stopped business already a few years ago. Some of the "classics" from the 90's could be found as cut-outs and often turn up in second hand stores in Germany. I haven't seen new releases in shops for a long time. Or maybe I just didn't notice, because the recent albums are by less known artists. The Inakustik webshop is probably not up-to-date. I can put other CDs in the shopping basket, but not the Ellis/Parlan disc. When clicking "Bestellen" (Order), the shopping basket shows up, but the CD is not added.
  24. Do you have a laserdisc player? B) This one will probably go cheaper: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...4&category=7756 The item has now been relisted for $19.99.
