If DVD-A support is not needed (titles are much more scarce than SACDs), a good universal player would be the new Philips DVD 963 SA, which plays DVD, CD, SACD and MP3-CDs. Dutch digital delight Reviews say that the sound is outstanding for the price ($400-500). That's especially true for CD playback (upsampling option). Picture quality is excellent too. The machine is very well built, but only available in silver. I will get one soon to replace my recently bought Sony DVD/MP3 and CD/SACD players ($250 and $400), which are both inferior in their domain. A few months ago there was no player on the market under $1000 that would offer DVD playback plus high quality CD sound. Apparently the demand for the Philips is so high that it is difficult to get immediately.

Upcoming AOTW - The Quintet at Massey Hall
Claude replied to Alexander Hawkins's topic in Album Of The Week
I don't remember how long this album is, but they could have tried to put the non-overdubbed tracks (which are only available in the Complete Debut Recordings box) on the new CD together with the "official" version. This would have convinced me to upgrade my OJC CD. -
The website says: "All releases are carefully re-mastered by one of Germany's leading studio engineers (F.Thein) using all his knowledge about the music using today's state of the art technical equipment for the benefit of a new fresh listening experience" It doesn't however say which tapes they used for this new reissue. Here is the engineer's website: www.thein.de . This company looks more serious than ZYX, which is mainly releasing pop records. Mr Thein at work:

Upcoming AOTW - The Quintet at Massey Hall
Claude replied to Alexander Hawkins's topic in Album Of The Week
There is an US K2 remastered version (20Bit), that is said to sound much better than the original OJC release. http://www.fantasyjazz.com/catalog/parker_c_cat.html There is a german remastered CD (20 or 24Bit, who cares what ZYX uses? ) which is said to sound awful. But I suppose you already know to avoid those releases. As the music is 50 years old, we are also likely to see a Definitive CD very soon -
Here is my current wish list of OOP or hard to find (or maybe not) CDs: - Wayne Horvitz - Nine below zero (Sound aspects, 1986) - London Jazz Composers Orchestra - Double trouble (Intakt, 1989) - Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker - At Carnegie Hall (the Sony Mastersound release) - Joe Harriott - Free Form (Jazzland, 1960) - Miles Davis - No blues (Antwerpen 1967 bootleg) - Khan Jamal - Balafon Dance (CIMP, 2002 but hard to find) - Dave Liebman - Trio+1 (Owl, 1988) Any help appreciated Many of them are listed on GEMM.com , but I still try to find them for reasonable (<25$) prices. And hey, searching for rare CDs is even more fun than having them

I recently bought the Monk Complete London recordings 3CD box for 10 Euro at www.zweitausendeins.de . This came out in 1989. The sound is very good, some of the best recorded Monk on CD. I don't think the 24Bit versions can improve this very much.

I have/had 3 titles from this series: "Undercurrent", "Birth of the cool" and Intuition Those are not Blue Note sessions, so I can't compare the sound to the Blue Note TOCJ standard. But the RVG of "Birth of the cool" and the remastered "Undercurrent" are much better. I rather think those CDs are made from the late 80's, early 90's McMaster tapes.

You can't judge the AAJ board on a Wingy/Deep thread. This could also happen here.

I voted for "Destination ... out"

A Giuffre Verve box set on Mosaic would be great, but as they already did a big Giuffre set this probably won't happen. And there aren't that many unavailable Verve sessions. Jimmy Giuffre AMG entry - Fusion and Thesis are currently available on ECM ("1961") This alone could be an obstacle for complete Mosaic set. - Piece for Clarinet and Strings is in the "Konitz meets Giuffre" twofer (now OOP but fairly easy to find) - The Easy Way will come out in the "LP reproduction" series The remaining are: - Ad Lib - In Person - Seven Pieces Interesting to hear that the first two have once been reissued on CD. I guess they are extremely difficult to find today.

No problem with this image. I hated the distracting animated pacman pic Berigan had before. I would like to see no pictures at all in signatures. The avatar should be enough for individual needs of graphical expression.
-
Uploading instead of linking the avatar would solve the problem. I thought the tripod error image was meant to be the avatar

I don't know the latest models, but six months ago (when I bought a Sony DVD player) Pioneer and Sony both had a onscreen menues for mp3 playback, but only the Sony could display more than 8 caracters on directory and track names. 8 caracters is not much when you organize tracks in the format "track number - track name" Example: "01 - Love for sale" will be displayed as "01 - Lov" As I don't want to turn my TV on every time I want to browse an MP3-CD, I have printed a list with the album (=directory) names and numbers, so I can go directly to an album by typing it's number.

This could have been a fine "not Miles Davis" CD http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...0&category=1056

Comp. Miles Blackhawk up for pre-order
Claude replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't want to start a SACD debate but it seems that the Sony Jazz reissue programme on SACD has slowed down considerably during the last year. -

Amazon France initially had this 4CD set (marked "UK import") for preorder at 23 Euro (!), but then they changed the price to 35 Euro. You can always order it, but your order may be canceled by Amazon later "because the item is not available". That's how they manage to fix errors on pricing. -

Amazon Germany and Amazon France have this set for preorder as well. I thought this was supposed to be in 2 seperate 2CD sets ("Friday" and "Saturday"), but it is listed as a 4CD set, although Amazon France also offers two 2CD sets. Amazon Germany says it will be available on May 19, but their release dates are never reliable. -
I grabbed a Miles Davis set at Zweitausendeins' local shop in Munich yesterday. They still had a few left, and some Art Pepper sets. Don't be too disappointed when you receive your sets. The packaging is very cheap, unlike the box sets made in the US. The outer box is of thin card board. The Miles set contains a booklet which seems to be a reproduction of the one that's in the US LP-size box, reduced to CD size. So the text is small and difficult to read. But at this price one can't complain.

Why has Rooster lost? Candy Dulfer wasn't named before, or did I miss something?

YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!

Works great! My phone number leads to a museum in England, a bank in Nebraska and a female stripper in Hungary -
I read a discussion on rec.music.bluenote on this subject. Apparently there are no official recordings and no bootlegs of Monk and Mingus playing together. According to the "Straight No chaser" Monk biography, they played together on the Steve Allen TV show of June 6, 1955.

Although this will probably stretch the notion of "alternate takes" too much (it's an alternate band), I will add those on Andrew Hill's Grass Roots Strickly speaking of alternate takes made during one session, my favourites are those in the Bird/Dial and Coltrane/Atlantic boxes.
