  1. I'm using both, but the AMG is more of a database for me and not so much a guide. I'm wondering if anyone of you takes note of AMG's strange "Music Expert check" poll for every album. The resulting ratings ("Elegant, Sophisticated, Intimate, Ethereal, Elaborate, Ambitious" for the Osby album) are of no practical use for me.
  2. There are no mono CDs, only stereo CDs with the same signal on both channels (= mono) If you listen to mono sound on a stereo system, the sound of all instruments will appear to come from the middle of the speakers (if you sit in a perfect stereo triangle), with a headphone the sound will appear to come from the middle of your head.
  3. Kudos to Dan for this diffcult choice of selecting only 10 Wynton albums for this poll. The 3 "Soul Gestures in Southern Blue" volumes would have been natural candidates as well, and some of his ballets and thematic compositions
  4. My favourite Marsalis record is Black Codes (From the Underground) Because it is not on the list, my vote went for J Mood, which is quite similar in style, although not as good.
  5. Yes, install a virus scanner that blocks harmful attachments. This isn't a perfect protection, but it will prevent most viruses and worms from being opened if the virus database is regularly updated. And make a backup of your personal data at least every week. This includes the mailbox, e-mail contacts, bookmarks, and all the data you created yourself (letters, photos). Except for photos, the data will probably fit on a single CD-RW that can be updated (incremental backup, only new or modified data are saved) Here is a freeware tool that can do an automatic backup: Backitup!. You need to know where your mail, bookmarks reside, this depends on your operating system and the internet programs.
  6. What would Jesus do? Seriously, while it may be good for the sound of an amplifier (which otherwise needs one or two hours to attain the optimal quality), there is no need to leave a computer on all the time. CPUs draw alot of power, especially if they don't have idle management (AMDs), and this will certainly be noticed on the electricity bill. There are even some hard drive brands that need to be powered down every few days according to the manufacturer.
  7. How does the Weston Select sound? And does anyone know how the Randy Weston "Little Niles" 2LP sampler from the 70's sounds? I've recently started buying vinyl records again, and if McMaster produces the same NoNoise disaster as with the Moncur Select (I know some like the sound, but I find it artificially clean) I might get this LP collection instead.

I had to check the All Music guide to see who Cleo Laine is. Is it a good thing that she seems to be unknown outside of the US (although she is born in the UK)? The picture on the AMG page reminds me of Barbara Streisand
  9. I don't listen to much rock anymore, but my 70's favourites are Jimi Hendrix and Can.
  10. Norah Jones and jazz purists loved this USA Today headline : http://www.usatoday.com/tech/webguide/inte...leb-jones_x.htm
  11. Today's pickups from the second hand vinyl bin: James Newton - Romance and Revolution (Blue Note, 1986) A brilliant set, comparable to the better known "African flower" Andrew Hill - From California with Love (Artists House, 1978) A solo recording. Haven't listened to it yet. A gatefold LP with an 8 page booklet
  12. If you delete the cookies from norahjones.info you should be able to browse the board as guest again. They could also block your IP address, but that would be rather useless as most people use dialup connections and change the IP address at every connection.
  13. I have the Byrd/Pepper set, and while it certainly has the McMaster sound signature (added brilliance on cymbals) it is a very balanced and successful remastering.
  14. A couple of Gerry Hemingway HatArt's were on Ebay last week. They went for $20-50
  15. The current NEW quality budget turntable is the Pro-ject Debut ($180 including cartridge) But below $200 you get most for your money by finding a used Thorens TD160/165/166 or TD145/146/147 ($100) and add a new cartridge ($100). Those 20-25 year old but very competitive turntables are a delight to watch and to work with. They are at least in the same league as a new Pro-ject 1.2 or the cheapest Rega ($400). In the US they may be a little harder to find, but in Europe there are a few every day on Ebay.de. With other vintage turntables finding replacement parts is often diffcult, not with a Thorens http://www.theanalogdept.com/
  16. Thanks, I wasn't aware of a DSD reissue.
  17. "Ornette" has been restored. Thank you so much. I love Norah and the boardmaster
  18. Star People is one of my favourite Miles Davis post-comeback albums. The CD I have (late 80's, made in Holland) sounds horrible. I've seen a japanese mini-LP reissue from 1998 (Sony SRCS-9135, apparently the latest reissue, no DSD remaster available) for a reasonable price, but I don't have the possibility to listen to it. Does anyone have this reissue and can comment on the sound? Is it worth upgrading, or is the recording really that bad?
  19. You seem to have been preemptively banned, Rooster
  20. "Ornette" is no more
  21. In addition to the works and recordings Hans has listed, one of my favourites: - The Wooden Prince (Ballet) New York Philharmonic, Pierre Boulez (1975, Sony reissue)
  22. Yes, it seems so. Norah Jones is even listed as a moderator of the "Write Norah" forum and has posted two messages ("hellooooo"): http://www.norahjones.info/forums/search.p...thor=norahjones
  23. It should be pointed out that this is an unofficial Norah Jones board, run by die-hard fans. The official Norah board is here: http://www.norahjones.com/board/default.htm Looks more familiar for BNBB users
  24. This is the weak point. If Disney want to use this technology to sell cheap "one view" DVDs (they will have to be a lot cheaper than regular DVDs, in the pay-per-view range, maybe $5-8), these discs will probably attract more people attempting to circumvent the limitation by copying the DVDs before they selfdestruct (although DVD-copying is not yet as easy and cheap as CD-copying) than people really using it for it's meant purpose. I can imagine that Disney will try to make the price even higher than that (half the price if a regular DVD, i.e. $8-10). Like the record industry which thinks it can sell downloadable albums for more than half the price of a CD. They will inevitably fail. I wonder what goes on in the brains of those marketing guys, especially after the DivX experience.
