  1. The January 22 and February 8 concerts were streamed on darkfunk.com some years ago, so there must be bootlegs around. Edit: Bootlegs are listed on the Miles Ahead site. The February 8 concert is an audience recording though.
  2. I read on the Steve Hoffman forum that the latest japanese reissue of Pangaea (maybe also Agartha) has unedited (or differently edited) tracks, which are quite longer than the original version. Can anyone confirm this? This is the CD: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=2376840
  3. Don't calculate your tax returns on XP, Jim
  4. Very clever! On the machine that deals with Bill Gates' taxes, the reminders say he is supposed to pay his taxes on January 31, 19106. (BTW, do a Google search on "january 19106" to see how many websites are still not Y2K-ready)
  5. Any Linux user here?
  6. Some virus emails sent to my office address are clever enough to use an existing email address from the same administration in the "From" field (which can be edited at will and is not a proof of the origin). In those cases I was only able to detect the scam because the text was in english (we mostly use french here) and was suspiciously generic (Subject: "Important document" Email text: "Please read attached document and send comments ASAP").
  7. Maybe we should have seperate polls about beliefs and acts
  8. What is the problem? The new software uses a different method to create polls, but it should be self-explanatory. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&CODE=01&HID=13
  9. By her looks, she must have converted to pop by now: http://www.beautyinmusic.com/artist_pages/asha_mevlana.htm
  10. Last week, a local german newspaper inadvertedly combined an article about Auschwitz (60th anniversity of the liberation of the concentration camps) with an advertisement for gas ("E.ON already cares today for tommorrow's gas")
  11. Hamburg? Do you mean AOL City?
  12. What the hell are you reading, Berigan?
  13. Have you read the replies to your first thread on the subject? http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=24316
  14. I think it's the fault of the player. I have a Sony SCD-XA777ES SACD player which has problems with a few discs too (3 OJC samplers and an Oregon CD, all manufactured by ZYX Germany), that play fine on other CD players. It was unable to read the TOC (table of content) of the discs. I solved it by making CD-R copies of the discs, which play normally on the Sony.
  15. I guess you mean the current copyright duration on sound recordings, which is 70 years from the date of performance (50 years in Europe). That is the copyright on the recorded performance. The copyrght on compositions or lyrics lasts 70 years after the death of the composer/author (same in Europe). I think a better alternative to reduced copyright duration would be a sort of compulsory licensing system that obliges rightholders to license out material that they don't want to keep in print themselves.
  16. Apparently it is not possible to simply buy someone else's tickets. In an effort to undercut the black market, tickets are registered to the buyer, and transfer has to be granted.
  17. In Germany jurisprudence defined a limit of 7 copies (from one original) for private copying. It was for photocopies but can be extended to any other media which falls under the private copying exemption. This means someone can burn CD-R copies for himself, family and a couple of friends but a student copying a CD for all his classmates would go beyond what is permitted. Online file sharing does not fall under the private copy exemption, BTW. Rightholders have to accept these private copies (they can prevent them with technical measures though), but are entitled to compensations in the form of levies on blank media and copying devices (which do now even include faxes and PC hard drives). These levies are paid to copyright associations which represent the artists. This system exists in most EU countries. And in Canada: http://www.cb-cda.gc.ca/news/c20032004fs-e.html
  18. Do you think vinyl listeners have a better musical taste than CD buyers?
  19. I hope the poor animal doesn't collide with a russian submarine
  20. Well, there is not that much discussion on the music really, but more on release versions, reissue plans (of music that is already available). I admit that myself I talk more about these things than about the actual music.
  21. The problem on the Steve Hoffman forum is that many regular posters have a predetermined opinion on the sound of CD reissues. There is a general preference for original CD releases and scepticism towards remasters. This may me justified in a certain way for pop reissues, where there is an annoying trend towards compressed and bright sound, but I notice too many negative comments on the SH forum from people who admit having only heard other CDs from the same label or reissue engineer. I think the board is very useful for advice on the sound of CDs, but one has to take the statements (including Hoffman's) with a grain of salt. I don't mind the wackos who buy ten versions of the same album, if they can help me buying the best one.
  22. Hard to answer, since this question mixes the legal and the ethical aspects. Most copyright legislations allow for private copying within certain limits, so there it is is clearly not criminal behaviour, but still you can consider it ethically wrong.
  23. These possible disturbences of the data stream would cause drop outs but not warbling noises. It could be compression artefacts caused by the MP3 (or other) encoding. Compare the downloaded file with the CD. A problem I recently had was that one of my CD players had problems with CD-Rs burnt at a fast speed (more than 12x). It produced clicking noises. The CD played fine on other players.
  24. Because nobody seems to care. Or maybe the legal sitiuation is too complicated for the CD store staff that orders the CDs. It's a strange situation. I don't think Tower or CD Universe would deliberately take the risk of selling illegal CDs. Rightholders can seize these CDs in the US and sue the importers.
  25. 70% of my listening time is jazz, the other 30% classical and rock/pop or electronic music. I think I could cope with a world without jazz. There is a lot of good music outside jazz.
