  1. If I remember correctly, Ron McMaster uses a Sonic Solutions tool for mastering. I've read one engineer refusing to use it, saying that the music sounds dead once it passed through that. Maybe that explains the sound of the Moncur Select, as well as other recent McMaster CDs (the 2004 Chet Baker Pacific Jazz reissues).
  2. Be sure to remove the CD-R copy from your car player when you drive to Canada:
  3. It seems that Concord is in the process of integrating the Fantasy website content into theirs. They have implemented a redirect that sends requests to fantasyjazz.com over to concordmusicgroup.com, although the Fantasy pages are not yet available on the new server (hence the error message). Instead of this mess, it would have been better just to close the Fantasy website until the reorganisation is finished. Maybe on monday it will be fixed. I have the Fantasy 2004 PDF catalog on my hard drive, but it is a whopping 43MB file, so I cannot send it by email.
  4. The Mosaic version sounds worst of those three remasterings, Ron McMaster seems to have used noise reduction. Of the two single disc versions, I prefer the RVG, which sounds more dynamic and detailed, but without the overemphasized treble of other RVG remasterings.
  5. For the music industry, the lesson from the Sony XCP disaster is: - don't use any copyprotection schemes OR - use "dumb" copyprotection schemes like EMI's CopyControl, which is harmless for the PC but allows for no copies at all The problem withe the XCP system is that it intends to permit a limited number of copies (3), but in order to enforce this limitation the PC needs to be controlled by low-level DRM software, which can have all sorts of unwanted side-effects.
  6. In Brussels, the biggest second hand shop charges 10-12 Euro for full price CDs (which cost 16-20 Euro new) and 6-8 Euro for midprice CDs (10-12 Euro new). In Munich, one store I visit regularly (CD Börse in Aventinstrasse) charges 5-10 Euro for CDs, depending mainly on the "market value" (less known artists are less expensive).
  7. Mark Russinovich has now tested the rootkit uninstaller offered by Sony BMG: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/11/m...decloaking.html
  8. Good news: According to Spiegel.de, SonyBMG does not intend to use this copyprotection in Germany. I think this would be valid then for all european releases. http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/technologie...,383301,00.html
  9. From my similar experiences with CD burners, it looks like it is dead. What you could do is to check the drive in another PC. Can you still read CDs with the drive?
  10. You're not the first who this happened to Fantasyjazz.com, the beginning of the end? The Fantasy webmaster should add a redirection for those who don't put a "www" in front of the address.
  11. Some great sounding jazz SACDs which are really worth getting even if you already have good sounding CD versions: - Art Pepper: Modern Jazz Classics - Bill Evans Trio: Sunday At The Village Vanguard - Bill Evans Trio: Waltz For Debby - Bob Belden: Black Dahlia - Cannonball Adderley Quintet: In San Francisco - Eric Dolphy: Out There - Gil Evans: Gil Evans & Ten (first stereo release) - Joe Henderson: Lush Life (remastering has improved the 16bit digital recording) - John Coltrane: Standard Coltrane - John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman (has the mono recordings as bonus) - Miles Davis: Big Fun (much better than CD box set) - Miles Davis: In A Silent Way (multichannel layer) - Miles Davis: Kind of Blue - Sonny Clark Trio - Sky Garden: Yo Miles! - Sonny Rollins: Way Out West There are many other good sounding SACDs, but some don't sound much superior to the remastered CD versions, that's why I did not list them. Here's my complete SACD list: http://www.sa-cd.net/recommendations/725
  12. I don't have any of these SonyBMG copyprotected CDs yet, butI've read that unlike BMGs earlier scheme this one has a confirmation dialog once the Autorun starts, asking if installation should start. If one clicks No, the CD is ejected. So it is not possible to "infect" the PC by just inserting the CD.
  13. I posted on this subject yesterday: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...89entry431689 Sony has now reacted: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5928608.html http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html
  14. Here's a very technical analysis by Mark Russinovich (sysinternals.com) of the potential security risks and stability issues introduced by the software installed by copyprotected SonyBMG CDs: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/s...tal-rights.html There is also an article on Slashdot: http://it.slashdot.org/it/05/10/31/2016223...tid=172&tid=158 And a german article on Heise: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/65602
  15. I had made an error in my order (chose a 20Bit version instead of regular OJC) and immediately sent an email to correct it. I did not receive an answer. Only after sending a reminder 3 days later did the shop owner Frank Theis reply, saying the change was made and the order was ready to be sent. Maybe he is very busy because of this sale. Try sending another email. On IBAN/BIC: Many germans are still unfamiliar with the IBAN/BIC system and only know their national numbers. 19. I saw it yesterday in the Jazz is Beck store in Munich. A huge book indeed, the cardboard box is approximately 50cm high. I would have to keep it standing on the floor against a wall as it wouldn't fit any bookshelf.
  20. I meant the limited edition reissue series, which is $15 list price, $11-13 street price. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=2123328
  21. Well, we don't know what will happen with Concord in charge, but it's certain that OJCs will be more expensive than the current 5.85€ sale. But the number of titles at jazzshop24.de is quite limited compared to the complete Fantasy catalogue, and some CDs (the "limited edition" series) are 9.85€
  22. I just made an order of german OJCs (not the 20bit ones) and SACDs at ZYX's special sale store www.jazzshop24.de. In an email exchange, the shop informed me that one of the ordered titles wasn't available anymore and could not be backordered as the licensing deal between Fantasy and ZYX ends on December 31, 2005. So ZYX is getting rid of their Fantasy stocks. This licensing deal between Fantasy and Bernard Mikulski (later to become ZYX) had lasted for the past 20 years.
  23. A belated happy birthday, Daniel !!
  24. Bon anniversaire Guy!
