Gary Thomas is one of my favourite tenor saxophonists from the 90's. According to All Music Guide, his last album as a leader appeared in 1999 (Pariah's Pariah), and his last sideman appearance on a recording was in 2001 (Grainger - Phase II, a blues album). I found with Google that his is director of jazz studies at Peabody Institute, Baltimore (not Washington ) (also read this), was backing singer Chris McNulty at a concert this June and will play in the Charles Tolliver Big Band in September. Has anyone seen him play at concerts in the recent years or know more about his current activities as a performer?

I've had a 20GB MP3 player (iRiver H120) for the past two years, and I cannot live without it anymore. Especially since I had to travel a lot during the last months. But I also listen to music at work whenever it's possible. Thanks to this portable player I've finally been able to start listening through those 2000+ Fantasy albums I had downloaded from emusic more than 3 years ago.

I've heard a few Ganelin Trio discs, and this was the one I wanted to have (it's been on my wishlist for years). Everything falls into place. -
FS: The Ganelin Trio - Non Troppo (hatART CD6059)

I bought one on Ebay very recently, for $13.5, but it was a disc from the infamous avant garde jazz collection where the owner had cut the spine from the back cover to store the CDs and booklets without jewel cases. I bought it for the music only, but this flaw certainly held off many collectors from bidding on it. -
I went through the Bluebird Jazz releases list and found these First Editions. Could be that I missed some. http://www.bluebirdjazz.com/albums/index.jsp - Art Blakey - Night in Tunesia - Lonnie Liston Smith - Astral Traveling - Gato Barbieri - Bolivia + Under Fire - Carmen McRae - Carmen sings Monk - Chet Baker - Chet is Back - Paul Desmond - Desmond Blue - Duke Ellington - Far East Suite - Gil Evans - Plays Jimi Hendrix - Coleman Hawkins - Hawk in Hifi - Louis Armstrong and Friends - Joe Williams - Newport 63 - Gil Scott-Heron - Free Will - Lena Horne - Stormy Weather - Sonny Rollins - The Bridge - Oscar Peterson - This is Oscar Peterson - Charles Mingus - Tijuana Moods - Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond - Two of a mind

Flurin, The main difference between the earlier CD releases (including the latest french BMG 24Bit remaster) and the "First Edition" reissue is that the latter doesn't have the slight artificial reverb. Different tapes seem to have been used. This mainly improves the sound of the drums. If I had to rate the sound, I would give the french BMG 6/10 and the First Edition 7.5/10

I agree. And it is "licensed by Rundfunk der DDR". They must have gotten a deal with Margot Honecker

I have the Gato Barbieri disc too. It may be the best CD transfer of these recordings, but the recording quality is not great anyway, as on most of his Flying Dutchman sessions. But because the CD contains two albums, it is more interesting than the seperate european CD reissues.
-
These reissues are welcomed, but I will stick to my recently found mint LP copies of "Trance" and "Love love". In my view ECM LPs (german pressings) sound consistingly better than the 80's and 90's CD reissues. Not that the CDs sound bad, but the sound is more distant and flat and amplifies the more negative aspects of the "ECM sound". With other labels, I often prefer the CD versions.
-
I have compared the french 24Bit remaster and the US "First edition" reissue. The US CD sounds much better, it seems to have been made from the original master tapes, while the french CD has some reverb which could have been added to LP production tapes. I can also recommend Sonny Rollins' "The Bridge" from the same series, which sounds better than all previous CD versions.

I think iTunes purchases are limited to the "local" store of the customer. You cannot choose other iTunes stores.

From the 1965 european concerts, there exists a film recording of a Belgian TV studio performance: http://www.playjazz.com/VI071.html

Yes, but MP3 player software only allows to edit tags file by file, while dedicated tagging software is much more comfortable because it allows to edit all the common tag fields of many files at once.
-
I don't know that player, but most MP3 players play the songs within a folder in alphabetical order. The worldwide "standard" to name mp3 files is 01 Trackname 1.mp3 02 Trackname 2.mp3 . . which solves the track order problem. Most MP3 creator software allow to generate filenames like this when ripping the CD. There are also many mass-renaming programs that do the trick, by using the data within the ID tags (if they exist) to rename the files. Using playlists is more complicated, and generally only used to play tracks in an order that differs from the order on CD.

Hi Tony, In my limited experience with copyprotected BN CDs, the success in copying them highly depends on the hardware. My CD-R drive ignored the copyprotection completely, but my DVD drive could not access the CD audio data.

Yesterday evening I fell asleep while telephoning with my girlfriend It´s been a very busy week for me, with a lot of traveling and meetings, so I was quite exhausted on Friday evening when I arrived late from the airport. I SMSed my girlfriend (who currently lives abroad) to ask her to talk over Skype (free internet telephony), put on the PC headset and lay down on the sofa. Usually she does most of the talking on the phone, and we spoke for about half an hour. Next thing I see was me waking up on the sofa at 4AM with the headset still on, and a SMS on my mobile saying "Good night darling. You must have fallen asleep. I know you are fine, because I can hear you snoring"
