  1. Half.com will remain open until October 14, 2004 http://half.ebay.com/account/announcement/announce.jsp
  2. MP3.com has now added the possibility to search for track names.
  3. As far as the copyright on the recordings is concerned, this would not be a problem. But there would also be trademark issues involved. Blue Note (EMI) owns trademarks on Blue Note word marks and logos and can prevent anyone from using them as a trademark. Trademark protection can be renewed endlessly. On some Definitive releases, the original label is mentionned in the title of the CD: "Complete Blue Note Studio Recordings" (Clifford Brown). In that case, it can be argued that "Blue Note" is only used to indicate the nature of the product. Just like an independant car repairer can indicate in ads what brands of cars he repairs or what spare parts he carrys, without asking permission to the trademark owners. If Definitive used the Blue Note logo or issued a "Blue Note series", this would be considered trademark infringement, because it is more than just indicating the nature of the music. The criterium for infringement is that the consumer can be mislead by the use of the trademarked word, thinking it is a CD from the label who owns the trademark. I don't think that's the case with the Clifford Brown disc and other Definitive CDs. But a "Best of Blue Note" compilation would be much more problematic, because the word Blue Note is used so prominently. The cover art and liner notes of all Blue Note releases are still protected by copyright, so they cannot be used. All other discographical data can be freely used, with the exception of complete and detailed discographies which could qualify for database protection (a special copyright-like protection introduced in the EU ten years ago).
  4. Great news, especially the Braxton and Cecil Taylor reissues. I discovered those albums after they went OOP, and the current Ebay prices are $60 and higher.
  5. I listened to the Charlie Parker "Big Band" VME. It sounds rather thin, distant and shrill. I don't have the 10CD box set to compare it too, but I have doubts that for this CD version they re-transfered the disc sources. Not much surface noise can be heard. I´m wondering if the "Bird and Diz" VME, which I have ordered, will show some improvment over the first CD version.
  6. On sending credit card info by email: This is not recommended because emails travel unencrypted over many servers, and somebody with access to a server could run a software scanning all mails for credit card info. But a fraud can also happen in any shop or restaurent where the credit card is used, so one should not overestimate this risk. If a secure website is not available, it is common practice to communicate credit card numbers by fax, telephone or to send the number divided into 3 or 4 emails.
  7. I just got the Bud Powell "Jazz giant" VME edition and compared it it to the 1988 CD version. It's really like night and day. These are new transfers from 78RPM discs. They sound much clearer, but there is also more surface noise. An essential upgrade. I will receive another batch of VME from jpc.de in the next days
  8. Anything new on Alfred's question?
  9. You guys are addicted to those black boxes I have over 2000 CDs, but only 8 Mosaic sets
  10. Somebody posted another AMG alternative with AMG content in the Steve Hoffman forum: http://wwwp.musicmatch.com (yes, it´s "wwwp") I still prefer http://www.mp3.com though, which is faster to navigate.
  11. Today I received replacement CDs from PDO. Thanks for the tip, Reinier
  12. Some CD players have problems reading CD-Rs burned at higher speeds. I burn music CDs at 4x speed, although my CD-R writer supports 12x speed. My DVD player (Philips DVD963SA), which can play MP3s from data CD-Rs, has problems when such CDs are written at 8x speed and higher speeds. Skipping noises which I first thought were due to MP3 encoding problems were in fact caused by the writing speed. One should not go below 2x speed, because most current CD-R brands have higher failure rates at very low speeds.
  13. Many of those albums were available on CD before, so they just need to rip the tracks form the CD and make they available for download. Which of the albums have never been available on CD?
  14. Apple Launches iTunes Music Store in the UK, France & Germany (Apple Press release, June 2004)
  15. iTunes finally started in Europe this summer, but is not available in every country because of copyright reasons. Apple needs distribution agreements with every national copyright society (which represents composers), in addition to the agreements with the artists/labels. iTunes is apparently not yet available in Switzerland (I can't check iTunes.com here at my office, where music download sites are blocked): Legale Onlinemusik bleibt rar Strangely, iTunes Europe is located in Luxembourg, but people from Luxembourg can't buy music from iTunes
  16. Brad, check their website. It provides information for everybody, including the technologically unsophisticated www.itunes.com You will need to install the itunes software. You can play the downloaded music on your Mac/PC, an iPod player (other brands don't support the AAC file format) or burn them onto normal audio CDs.
  17. Here's the list of more than 30 Steeplechase albums he participated in: http://www.steeplechase.dk/steeplechase/qu...category=artist
  18. That's the big difference. It's hard for a woman to rape a 12 year boy. The law can't make a difference between genders, but there IS a difference. I don't think this relationship is good, and I think she deserved to be punished for not respecting the court decision. But she does not deserve to be treated exaclty like a man who raped a 12 year old girl, using violence. What if you were a 12 year old boy and being seduced by your teacher, a 35 year old attractive woman? Would you feel traumatized? It's not good, but it's not a horrible crime either.

  20. Too bad you haven't filed a business method patent for this brilliant idea Apple obtains patent license from E-Data for downloading music and burning it to CD's
  21. I'm happy with a Terratec DMX 6FIRE 24/96 LT, which cost 130 Euro. The "full version" cost 200 Euro and has a breakout box with more connections, but the performance is the same. It uses the technology from the Terratec EWX 24/96, which is one of the best cards in the 250 Euro range. These are good cards for 2 channel recording in 16bit/44.1Khz or 24Bit/96KHz.
  22. Dutroux ... Fourniret ... Letourneau
  23. Previously it was reported on jazzmatazz that the following albums would be reissued: - Chet Baker Big Band - Chet Baker Ensemble - Chet Baker Sextet - Chet Baker Sings and Plays Maybe they will be included in a 3CD set? A "Best of Chet" box set ("The Pacific Jazz Years", 4CDs) was already released in the mid 90's, so this seems more unlikely.
  24. I have some experience with high quality noise removal software. For vinyl popping noise it is very good, but for constant groove noise and tape hiss removal the usage is very limited, as far as music recordings are concerned. Removing hiss effectively changes the music too much, treble sounds unnatural. I usually remove loud pops manually, be cutting it out of the soundwave (zooming in the relevant proportion) and keep the rest of the noise, in order to preserve the quality of the sound.
